Georgia improved its record to 4-0 on the season with a 48-6 win over Southern University on Saturday, but how well did each position group perform in the victory? Dawgs247 issues grades to each below in our weekly Report Card.
(Photo: Dale Zanine, USA TODAY Sports)QuarterbackGreyson Lambert had yet another efficient and effective week through the air. He only tossed it 10 times but he completed nine of those for 146 yards and a pair of touchdowns. His average of 14.6 yards per attempt shows that it wasnt just d**k and dunk, either. Brice Ramsey also looked good when it was his turn. He completed 11 of 14 passes for 125 yards and led a couple of scoring drives and another that ended in missed field goal. Ramsey did have a couple of mistakes. He missed open receivers twice -- once with an overthrow and another with an underthrown ball. Lambert also had an error in the game. He held the ball a bit too long on a second quarter play that resulted in a sack. Still, it was a very good day.Grade: A-
Running BacksThe first half was rough for Georgias running backs in a couple of ways. First of all, there wasnt much running room and thats on the offensive line. But the running backs didnt exactly get off to a roaring start, either. Both Nick Chubb and Sony Michel had a couple of missed cuts in the first half that could have resulted in big plays. But it didnt take long for them to get that worked out. Chubb would record a 49-yard touchdown in the third quarter to put him over 100 yards for the 12th straight game. Michel would have an electrifying 58-yard run for a score. Both Brendan Douglas and Keith Marshall would get some action. Each would average 7.3 yards per carry. Grade: A-
Receivers and Tight EndsThis group may have been Georgias most consistent offensive unit on Saturday. Malcolm Mitchell had another big day with five receptions for 96 yards and a touchdown. He also had a long touchdown from Lambert called back because of a penalty. Isaiah McKenzie had the best receiving game of his career with four catches for 74 yards. He had a few grabs in tight coverage. As far as blocking goes, the tight ends had some struggles in the first half but the receivers blocked well on the edge all game. Grade: A
Offensive LineThis group basically slept walked through the first couple of quarters. There was no running room for the backs and there was more pressure on the quarterback than there should have been. Southern was stacking the box with defenders but it was often a UGA lineman who was getting beat at the point of attack to slow the play down before it got started. The second half was another story as the UGA front five took control of the game and started creating huge rush lanes for the running backs and clean pockets for the trigger men. After a tremendous game last week, it was only a half of one this week. C-
Defensive LineWhile Georgias defensive line didnt lose the battle up front as much as the offensive line did in the first half, it didnt play well, either. Sterling Bailey had a couple of missed tackles on the edge and failed to set the edge more than once, allowing Southern to have some success outside.. Chris Mayes and John Atkins were pretty solid against the run between the tackles but they struggled to push the pocket. The group recovered well in the second half and the young players actually made a number of big plays down the stretch. Chauncey Rivers and Trent Thompson both tallied their first tackles for a loss. Thompson also added a half sack. It was a little better than the offensive line but not by much. Grade: C+
Outside LinebackersJordan Jenkins and Georgias outside linebackers didnt have as big of an effect on the pocket as one would have thought in going against a Southern offensive line that was at a serious disadvantage in regards to size, length, and athleticism. Jenkins had a few pressures, mostly in the first quarter and the second half. Lorenzo Carter also had a few impressive plays in rushing the quarterback and in pursuit. Chuks Amaechi played well against the run on the edge and showed good energy in pursuit. Its the second straight week without big plays for this group but still overall solid play for the most part.Grade: B-
Inside LinebackersLeonard Floyd, Tim Kimbrough, and Jake Ganus continue to be active against the run and the pass for Georgia. There were some negative plays for this group in the first half. Southern was having some success off tackle by catching the Bulldogs out of position on the inside, but as the inside backers settled in, Southern struggled to get anything going. Kimbrough tied the team lead in tackles with five including a tackle for a loss. Floyd had three tackles and half tackle for loss. Ganus also added three stops. Not a complete game but not a bad one.Grade: B
Defensive BacksGeorgias secondary was very active near the line of scrimmage on Saturday. Dominick Sanders and Malkom Parrish both registered tackles for a loss while Reggie Wilkerson shared one with Floyd. Sanders is looking more and more comfortable in run support and that shows in the stats with three solo stops. He also had an impressive pass break up. Parrish is also playing really well. Freshman safety Johnathan Abram a few teaching moments when he tried to tackle Southerns ball carriers way too high and gave up unnecessary yardage. Other than that, the group tackled and covered fairly well on the day. Grade: B+
Special TeamsWell start with the two negatives for Georgia on special teams. Isaiah McKenzie made a poor decision on a second half punt where he muffed it and allowed Southern to gain possession of the ball. Collin Barbers only punt of the day was hurried and only traveled with 24 yards. Otherwise, things went fairly well for Georgia on Saturday. Southern was able to get a couple of kick returns out to the 30-yard line, but nothing significant. The Bulldogs handled the pooch kick well and blocked a punt in the first half that set up a score. Parrish was the one who got a hand on it. Marshall Morgan got back on track with a pair of field goals. One was from 47 yards out and the other was a 25-yard chip shot. He also had four touchbacks. It was a much better showing this week from this group than the past two. Grade: B
