49ers" QB Colin Kaepernick is about to follow in RGIII"s footsteps

Colin Kaepernick burst onto the scene in his second year as a pro (2012), completing 62.4 percent of his passes for 1,814 yards in 13 games (seven as a starter), throwing 10 touchdowns with just three interceptions. He added another 415 yards and five touchdowns rushing.

The season was a huge success, ending with a loss to the Baltimore Ravens in the Super Bowl.

The next two years were solid both over 3,000 yards passing, 500 yards rushing and at least 20 total touchdowns in large part due toKaepernicks ability to turn lemons into lemonade via the read option.

[With RGIII benched, Redskins finally have an average QB under center]

The read option, according to Bleacher Reports Matt Bowen, uses zone-blocking techniques on the offensive line with the quarterback reading the unblocked edge defender through the mesh point (quarterback-running back exchange) out of a variety of personnel groupings and alignments. It relies on the quarterback making the correct read and being able to scramble for yardage if the defense provides the opportunity.Kaepernickrushed the ball 104 times for639 rushing yardslast season, second among quarterbacks to Russell Wilson of the Seattle Seahawks.

However, the 49ers want to change his approach under center and turn him into a more traditional pocket passer. Per Matt Barrows of the Sacramento Bee:

The 49ers strategy this offseason has been to boost [Blaine] Gabberts confidence after an ugly 2014 exhibition in which he threw two interceptions, completed only 46.8 percent of his passes and was booed by the home fans. And in that regard, the team has succeeded.

The plan with Kaepernick: Take him out of his comfort zone.

Hes capable of the same rollouts that Gabbert has performed and the read option likely will be significant part of the offense this year just as it has been in previous seasons. But Jim Tomsula said he and his staff have wanted to see both Kaepernick and the offensive line in front of him in more drop-back situations.

I am not sure more dropbacks are a good thing, even if Kaepernick did work onhis mechanics this offseason withformer NFL quarterback Kurt Warner.

Of the577 dropbacksKaepernick took in 2014, he was sacked on 52 of them. All but six of those occurred when he held the ball for longer than 2.6 seconds. His average time to throw: 2.96 seconds per the game charters at Pro Football Focus.

When faced with pressure, he saw his passer rating drop from 94.4 to 64.8.

There are reasons to abandon the read option, the most compelling being how much better defenses have gotten at defending it. But not playing toKaepernicks strengths could set him on a path for failure, not unlike what we saw in Washington with Robert Griffin III.

Griffin, too, was a mobile quarterback who used his legs to win the 2012 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year. But the team wanted him to become a more traditional passer, and that led to many sacks, injuries and benchings to the point thatKirk Cousins is now the starting quarterback for the 2015 season.

[Redskins head coach Jay Gruden:Its Kirks team]

Griffin, likeKaepernick, took more than 2.9 seconds to throw the ball and saw his performance suffer the longer he remainedin the pocket.

Kaepernicks passer rating doesnt suffer as much, but his completion percentage tooka big hit the longer he holds on to the ball.

PerhapsKaepernick is able to improve his abilityto read the field and connect with his receivers, but he ranked 18 out of 27 quarterbacks for accuracy percentage (72.6 percent), which takes into accountdropped passes, throw aways, spiked b***s, batted passes, and passes where the quarterback was hit while they threw the ball. And his accuracy on deep passes, those targeted at least 20 yards downfield, was tied for 17 out of 25 qualified passers last season (33.3 percent).

Plus, the early returns from the preseason arenot encouraging for Kaepernick: 5-for-13, 40 yards, zero touchdowns and three sacks, one for a safety.

Theres not any concern on this team, Kaepernick said. Thats what the preseason is for, is to work those things out and see who we have in different positions. So thats what were doing and were working to make sure were ready for the regular season.

Raiders Shock 49ers

OAKLAND, Calif. -- The Oakland Raiders ended their three-week roller-coaster ride on a high and sent the Bay Area rival San Francisco 49ers to their lowest point under coach Jim Harbaugh.

Derek Carr threw three touchdown passes and the Raiders bounced back from a shellacking last week by beating the 49ers 24-13 on Sunday and putting a major dent in San Francisco's dwindling playoff hopes.

The Raiders (2-11) followed their exhilarating first win of the season against Kansas City with a 52-0 loss at St. Louis before delivering their most complete performance of the season against San Francisco (7-6).

A stunning loss to the lowly Oakland Raiders has the San Francisco 49ers' playoff hopes dwindling, writes Paul Gutierrez. Story

"It's great for us to come off of a (bad) week and perform the way we did today," said safety Charles Woodson, who sealed the win with a late interception.

"Being able to bounce back from the way we felt last week was big for us. To win this game, the Battle of the Bay, your crosstown rivals, it's a big win for us."

Carr completed 22 of 28 passes for 254 yards and completely outplayed counterpart Colin Kaepernick in his best performance yet in his rookie season.

With a second straight loss, the 49ers are in danger of missing the playoffs for the first time in Harbaugh's four-year tenure. San Francisco trails three teams by two games in the NFC wild-card race with three games remaining after making three straight NFC title games.

"There is no surrendering," Harbaugh said. "You look for the next thing to win at."

A Thanksgiving night loss at home to rival Seattle prompted CEO Jed York to apologize to fans on Twitter and raised even more speculation that Harbaugh will not be back next season for the final year of his five-year contract.

Harbaugh sparked more chatter about where he might wind up next season when he walked out of the tunnel and straight to Raiders owner Mark Davis for a quick chat before his first game in Oakland since his tenure as an assistant with the Raiders in 2002 and '03.

Raiders interim coach Tony Sparano is making his case to keep the job by winning two of the past three weeks, including a 24-20 victory over Kansas City on Nov. 20.

"We said last night in the meeting that somebody had to step up and make a couple of plays," Sparano said. "Today I felt a bunch of guys stepped up."

From Carr's big game to Mychal Rivera's 109-yard receiving day to a pair of sacks from Antonio Smith and Khalil Mack to a dominant offensive line performance that included a touchdown catch by left tackle Donald Penn, the Raiders had plenty of big performances.

"This week it was preached to us just how important this game was," Smith said. "This week more and more of us became true Raiders, knowing what the heritage is about, knowing what this game was about, how important it was to this city."

Carr rarely faced any pressure, giving him plenty of time to find open receivers downfield. He hit all five of his passes for 73 yards on the go-ahead drive, capped by a 9-yard pass to Marcel Reece that made it 17-13.

After a three-and-out by the 49ers, Carr led the Raiders to their first consecutive TD drives of the season with a 5-yard scoring strike to Rivera.

"They were able to go out there and take advantage of the mistakes we made," linebacker Aldon Smith said. "They just made more good plays than we did. He did a good job of getting the ball out and using his protection."

Kaepernick threw an interception on the first play from scrimmage, was sacked on San Francisco's last and wasn't much better in between. He finished 18-for-33 for 174 yards with one touchdown, two interceptions and five sacks as San Francisco failed to score 20 points for the sixth time in seven games.

The Raiders went ahead 10-7 in the second quarter on a 3-yard touchdown pass to the 330-pound Penn, who bowled over Eric Reid at the goal line and leaped into the Black Hole for a beer-doused celebration. It was Penn's third career TD catch and second against the Niners, having also caught one in 2010.

"I'm happy I'm able to live every big man's dream," Penn said.

Game notesNiners LB Ahmad Brooks had his streak of 60 straight starts snapped because he missed a meeting Tuesday. Brooks did not play at all in the game. ... Carr's 140.2 passer rating was the highest for the Raiders since Rich Gannon posted a 141.9 against the Giants in 2001.

49ers CEO apologizes for the team's embarrassing Thanksgiving loss

(Bob Donnan/USA TODAY Sports)

San Francisco 49ers CEO Jed York was utterly disappointed with the way the his team took the field on Thanksgiving night. The teams 19-3 loss puts them in a rather precarious position with the playoffs losing.

It was also just an atrocious game to watch.

San Francisco managed just 164 total yards of offense and didnt even make it out of their half of the field until the middle of the third quarter.

As far as terrible games go, this was one for the ages. York decided to tweet an apology to 49ers fans after the carnage ended.

How did the San Francisco coaching staff feel about Yorks apology? Jim Harbaugh chose to ignore it.

I dont know anything about the tweet. Jim Harbaugh responding to @JedYork They played better as a team than we did

Will Brinson (@WillBrinson) November 28, 2014

Colin Kaepernick, whose most reliable receiver during the game was Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman, agreed with York.

Kaepernick agreed with Jed York's unacceptable/apology tweet: "It's not acceptable. We didn't play well. We have much higher standards"

Cam Inman (@CamInman) November 28, 2014

And for those of you who love a good controversy, the local Bay Area media has you covered.

The last time Jed York offered up words like that, Mike Singletary wasn't the head coach much longer. Not saying this is exactly the same
