NVIDIA Announces DRIVE PX 2 - Pascal Power For Self-Driving Cars

As has become tradition at CES, the first major press conference of the show belongs to NVIDIA. In previous years their press conference would be dedicated to consumer mobile parts the Tegra division, in other words while more recently the companys conference has shifted to a mix of mobile and automobiles. Finally for 2016, NVIDIA has made a full transition over to cars, with this years press conference focusing solely on the subject and skipping consumer mobile entirely.

At CES 2015 NVIDIA announced the DRIVE CX and DRIVE PX systems, with DRIVE CX focusing on cockpit visualization while DRIVE PX was part of a much more ambitious entry into the self-driving vehicle market for NVIDIA. Both systems were based around NVIDIAs then-new Tegra X1 SoC, implementing it either for its graphics capabilities or its compute capabilities respectively.

For 2016 however, NVIDIA has doubled-down on self-driving vehicles, dedicating the entire press conference to the concept and filling the conference with suitable product announcements. The headline announcement for this years conference then is the successor to NVIDIAs DRIVE PX system, the aptly named DRIVE PX 2.

From a hardware perspective the DRIVE PX 2 is essentially picking up from where the original DRIVE PX left off. NVIDIA continues to believe that the solution to self-driving cars is through computer vision realized by neural networks, with more compute power being necessary to get better performance with greater accuracy. To that while DRIVE PX was something of an early system to prove the concept, then DRIVE PX 2 is NVIDIA is thinking much bigger.

As a result the DRIVE PX 2 is a very powerful and very power hungry design meant to offer much greater compute performance than the original DRIVE PX. Based around NVIDIAs newly disclosed 2016 Tegra (likely to be Parker), the PX 2 incorporates a pair of the SoCs. However in a significant departure from the original PX, the PX 2 also integrates a pair of Pascal discrete GPUs on MXM cards, in order to significantly boost the GPU compute capabilities over what a pair of Tegra processors alone could offer. The end result is that PX 2 packs a total of 4 processors on a single board, essentially combining the two Tegras 8 ARM Cortex-A57 and 4 NVIDIA Denver CPU cores with 4 Pascal GPUs.

NVIDIA is not disclosing anything about the discrete Pascal GPUs at this time beyond the architecture and that, like the new Tegra, theyre built on TSMCs 16nm FinFET process. However looking at the board held up by NVIDIA CEO Jen-Hsun Huang, it appears to be a sizable card with 8 GDDR5 memory packages on the front. My gut instinct is that this may be the Pascal successor to GM206 with the 8 chips forming a 128-bit memory bus in clamshell mode, but at this point thats speculation on my part.

What isnt in doubt though are the power requirements for PX 2. PX 2 will consume 250W of power equivalent to todays GTX 980 Ti and GTX Titan X cards and will require liquid cooling. NVIDIAs justification for the design, besides the fact that this much computing power is necessary, is that a liquid cooling system ensures that the PX 2 will receive sufficient cooling in all environmental conditions. More practically though, the company is targeting electric vehicles with this, many of which already use liquid cooling, and as a result are a more natural fit for PX 2s needs. For all other vehicles the company will also be offering a radiator module to use with the PX 2.

Otherwise NVIDIA never did disclose the requirements for the original PX, but its safe to say that PX 2 is significantly higher. Its particularly telling that in the official photos of the board with the liquid cooling loops installed, its the dGPUs we clearly see attached to the loops. Consequently I wouldnt be surprised if the bulk of that 250W power consumption comes from the dGPUs rather than the Tegra SoCs.

As far as performance goes, NVIDIA spent much of the evening comparing the PX 2 to the GeForce GTX Titan X, and for good reason. The PX 2 is rated for 8 TFLOPS of FP32 performance, which puts PX 2 1 TFLOPS ahead of the 7 TFLOPS Titan X. However while those are raw specifications, its important to note that Titan X is 1 GPU whereas PX 2 is 4, which means PX 2 will need to work around multi-GPU scaling issues that arent an issue for Titan X.

Curiously, NVIDIA also used the event to introduce a new unit of measurement the Deep Learning Tera-Op, or DL TOPS which at 24 is an unusual 3x higher than PX 2s FP32 performance. Based on everything disclosed by NVIDIA about Pascal so far, we dont have any reason to believe FP16 performance is more than 2x Pascals FP32 performance. So where the extra performance comes from is a mystery at the moment. NVIDIA quoted this and not FP16 FLOPS, so it may include a special case operation (ala the Fused Multiply-Add), or even including the performance of the Denver CPU cores.

On that note, while DRIVE PX 2 was the focus of NVIDIAs presentation, it was GTX Titan X that was actually driving all of the real-time presentations. As far as I know we did not actually see any demos being powered by PX 2, and its unclear whether PX 2 is even ready for controlled demonstration at this time. NVIDIA mentions in their press release that the PX 2 will be available to early access partners in Q2, with general availability not occurring until Q4.

Meanwhile along with the PX 2 hardware, NVIDIA also used their conference to reiterate their plans for self-driving cars, and where their hardware and software will fit into this. NVIDIA is still aiming to develop a hardware ecosystem for the automotive industry rather than an end-to-end solution. Which is to say that they want to provide the hardware, while letting their customers develop the software.

However at the same time, in an action admitting that its not always easy for customers to get started from scratch, NVIDIA will also be developing their complete reference platform combining hardware and software. The reference platform includes not just the hardware for self-driving cards including the PX 2 system and other NVIDIA hardware to train the neural nets but also software components including the companys existing DriveWorks SDK, and a pre-trained driving neural net the company is calling DRIVENet.

Consequently while the company isnt strictly in the process of developing its own cars, it is essentially in the process of training them. Which means NVIDIA has been sending cars around the Sunnyvale area to record interactions, training the 37 million neuron network how to understand traffic. A significant portion of NVIDIAs presentation was taken up demonstrating DRIVENet in action, showcasing how well it understood the world using a combination of LIDAR and computer vision, with a GTX Titan X running the network at about 50fps. Ultimately I think its fair to say that NVIDIA would rather their customers be doing this, building nets on top of systems like DIGITS, but they also have seen first-hand in previous endeavors that bootstrapping an ecosystem like they desire requires having all of the components already there.

Finally, NVIDIA also announced that they have lined up their first customer for PX 2: Volvo. In 2017 the company will be outfitting 100 XC90 SUVs with the PX 2, for use in their ongoing self-driving car development efforts.

You Can Afford This BugattiBut You Can"t Drive It

Bugatti is between eras. Since it was acquired by Volkswagen in 1998, the French luxury and racing outfit has made just one model. Superlative in every category that matters, the Veyron is among the fastest production cars in history (258 mph), flinging 1,200 horsepower from an 8-liter 16-cylinder, four-turbocharger engine.

Bugatti made 450 Veyrons in a few variants. It sold them for an average of $2.6 million, and ended the 10-year production run in March.

Now its time for the encore, and Bugattis stalling for time. We know a little bit about what comes next: Bugatti expects it to succeed the Veyron as the fastest ever; it will use a carbon-fiber structure and an engine based on those of the outgoing car. Itll be called the Chiron, in honor of Bugatti-driving F1 champion Louis Chiron (or maybe the the mythological centaur who tutored Achilles).

Were unlikely to see an actual Chiron before next year, but Bugattis keeping us interested with a different sort of car. A virtual one.

At the Frankfurt Motor Show today, it unveiled the Vision Gran Turismo, a concept it made for the video racing game Gran Turismo. Its not the Chiron, but its an enticing preview of what were waiting for.

Bugatti president Wolfgang Durheimer says all 450 Veyrons were snatched up by proud automotive connoisseurs, and this is the consolation prize for the 99.999993812 percent of the population that didnt get one. Hes talking about the virtual car, but everyone in Frankfurt will be able to see the physical copy Bugatti built for the show.

It may be virtual, but it looks freaking sweet. The newest Bugatti retains the curves that set the Veyron apart from its more angular competitors like the Ferrari LaFerrari and McLaren P1, but adds track-focused features. Its got a wider, higher rear wing thats connected to the roof by a tail fin. Up front are a chin spoiler and a more pointed nose. To minimize wind resistance, the side view mirrors are puny enough to be mistaken for T-Rex arms. The whole thing is upholstered in the same suede used for F1 racing shoes.

The concept car is overstated, says design lead Achim Anscheidt. Indeed, but what really matters is that Anscheidt says the Vision provides an early look at the design language Bugatti will use on the Chiron.

Concept cars are often used to preview designs, but whatever makes it to production is inevitably more boring, a victim of cost limitations and safety regulations. Bugatti is different. Cost limitations arent really a thing. Regulations are a thing to be overcome with stacks of money.

Maybe you dont play Gran Turismo. You certainly wont own a Bugatti Chiron. But if you hope its awesomeness can match that of the Veyron, this videogame study is good news.

Seagate's new Personal Cloud drive is a $170 Plex Media Server



Remember Seagates new Personal Cloud drive, which my colleague Kevin Tofel wrote about earlier this week? Turns out the device, which can already play content on Chromecast, Roku, Apple TV and other devices, has another ace up its sleeve: It is getting a Plex Media Server app through Seagates NAS app store, the company revealed at the Pepcom Digital Experience show at CES Monday.

This is huge news for Plex fans:Plex, which is a long-time favorite of people witha largecollections of personal media, has had playback apps for all major mobile platforms as well as a long list of streaming boxes, smart TVs and other connected devices for some time.

But to usePlex,you also have to run a Plex Media Server app, whicheither means always leaving your laptop or a dedicated media PC up and running 24/7, or buying one of a handful of supported network-attached storage drives. Plex has media server apps available for just a few NAS models, with prices generally starting at $500 and up, not even including the necessary hard drives.

Seagate was showing off its Personal Cloud drives at the Pepcom Digital Experience event at CES.

Seagates Personal Cloud drives on the other hand start at $170 for a 3TB connected drive, with the option to spend a little more on a 4TB drive or a 5TB drive. Users will also be able to buy a 2-bay drive with 4TB, 6TB or 8TB capacity for added security via RAID.

Seagates Simple NAS ProductsProduct Line Manager Charles Ribaudo told me that the Cloud Drive wont be able to transcode media for Plex in real-time, but that the device will be able to transcode in advance to have the media ready in the formats youll need. He added that Seagate will be adding a bunch of other apps to the device, including BitTorrent Sync and Owncloud.

Seagate aims to make common hard drives uncommonly artistic



As cloud storage and SSDs threaten to make hard drives an afterthought, Seagate's LaCie division has decided to make storage an art form.

The $280 LaCie Mirror takes a 1 terabyte external hard drive and encases it in Gorilla Glass 3, more commonly found in smartphones. And in a truly dramatic twist, it perches on a piece of ebony wood imported from Indonesia.

As consumers increasingly back up their data to local SSDs and to cloud storage located elsewhere, one might wonder why consumers should continue investing in hard drives. Seagate's answer is to make its external hard drives conversation pieces, while trying to replace cloud storage with a local product.

Why this matters: We've recommended you rip out your hard drive and replace it with a flash-based SSD for a year or more now. But Seagate would still like you to remember that uploading a few dozen gigabytes of photos and movies to a cloud services takes time. Is that a compelling enough argument, or as venture capitalist Fred Wilson argued, did we truly "kill off the file" in 2014, replacing it with social networks and streaming services?

A bevy of drives

At CES, Seagate launched the LaCie Mirror, alongside:

  • The Seagate Personal Cloud, a local hard drive that either streams to tablets or smart TVs, or provides a local copy of what you have backed up in cloud services like Google Drive;
  • A battery-powered Seagate Wireless drive, a $130 500GB hard drive that can stream to up to three devices simultaneously;
  • And the Seagate Seven: a steel-encased $100 500GB external drive designed to mimic a bare drive. Seagate claims it'sthe thinnest external drive ever, at just 7 mm thick.

Seagate has found itself overtaken in recent years by Western Digital in terms of revenue and market share; WD now ships about 45 percent of the world's hard drives. Seagate's mission is now to lead in terms of "clever" design, the company said.

In that, the LaCie Mirror and Seagate Seven lead Seagate's efforts. The Mirror's mirror finish may be superfluous -- even if the glass doesn't shatter, dropping a hard drive on a hard surface is bad news -- but the design is certainly eye-catching.Both the Mirror and Seven connect using USB 3.0, a Seagate spokesman said.

You have to look twice to discover the LaCie Mirrors true ambition,said Pauline Deltour, the French designer who helped design the Mirror.Covered by mirrored glass,its first an elegant and functional object, and only on secondglance is it revealed to be a slim high-performance hard drive.

Head in the cloud

Seagate's wireless drives also recognize the fact that more and more people are storing their files in the cloudand yet, when it comes time to stream a large file to a local PC, most balk at the time and effort to do so. Seagate already ships a 500GB Wireless Plus drive for $150; at $130, the new one's just a trifle cheaper, and the wireless performance has improved. It will ship in early February.

And at one time, we might have called a product like the new Seagate Personal Cloud a NAS drive and been done with it; as more and more devices are becoming connected, however, wirelessly connected drives are gaining acceptance. Seagate hasn't what it will charge for the Personal Cloud, with single-drive configurations from 3 to 5 terabytes, and dual-drive (RAID 0, 1) configs from 4, 6, and 8 terabytes. They will ship later this month.

Given the abundanceof handheldcomputing devices there has been a trend of accessing content and content via cloud storage, said Stephen Baker,vicepresident at the NPD Group, in a statement.

Like the existing WD MyCloud line, Seagate's Personal Cloud uses a free Seagate Media app to securely access music, videos, and documents from the drive. You can stream to most smart TVs and Blu-ray players from LG or Samsung; to Roku, Google Chromecast, or AppleTV; and to iOS and Android phones and tablets, including the Amazon Kindle.

You can also set the drive to backup its contents to Amazon S3, Box, Baidu, Dropbox, Google Drive, and more; or else take what you've uploaded to that drive and store a local copy. Seagate also says that apps can run on the drive itself, including WordPress and BitTorrent Sync.

The hard drive industry has seen a shift from local drives tucked inside a PC to massive amounts of storage whirring away anonymously insider servers. But Seagate is hoping to make hard drives sexy again by giving local storage all the bells and whistles of cloud storage, while simultaneously placing control of your data back into your own hands..
