Wes Welker is returning to the NFL.
Hours after NFL Media Insider Ian Rapoport reported, via a source, that the former Patriots and Broncos receiver signed a deal with the Rams, St. Louis coach Jeff Fisher confirmed Welkers addition to his roster during a meeting with reporters.
Welkers deal is for one year at a prorated base salary of $970,000, and includes incentives worth as much as $700,000. The incentives are centered on his playing time and catches.
The Rams were provided incentive Monday to sign the reliable 34-year-old slot receiver when news broke that receiver Stedman Bailey was hit with a four-game suspension for violation of the leagues substance abuse policy.
Welkers last game action came in Week 17 last year, when he caught two passes for 42 yards against the Raiders. Welker reportedly was seriously considering retirement last year after numerous concussions with the Broncos limited his effectiveness in Denver. While reaching Super Bowl XLVIII with the Broncos, he never reached the levels he enjoyed with the Patriots for six seasons with Tom Brady, during which he appeared in Super Bowls XLII and XLVI.
He appeared on WEEI in the spring and indicated that he never ruled out a return to New England as long as Tom Brady was the quarterback.
Weve done physicals, weve done everything, Fisher told reporters Monday. I think h**l eventually move some chains for us.
The Rams are in desperate need for help for quarterback Nick Foles. Tavon Austin leads the team with 28 catches. The next closest is tight end Jared Cook, with 20.
