CLEVELAND, Ohio Keith Urban andEric Church won the Country Music Association"s musical event of the year award for their collaboration on "Raise "Em Up,"" and duoMaddie & Tae won for video of the year for "Girl in a Country Song.""
The awards were announced Wednesday on "Good Morning America"" in advance of the 8 p.m. "49th Annual CMA Awards Show"" broadcast on WEWS Channel 5.
The announcement means I"m 0-fer in the predictions department not a good start. In a column published in last week"s Sunday Arts section, I said I felt that Willie Nelson and Merle Haggard would win the musical event for their partnership on "Django & Jimmie,"" and that Kacey Musgraves would win the video award for the "Hee-Haw""-channeling "Biscuits.""
I"m still holding out hope for my No. 1 pick Garth Brooks to topple Luke Bryan as the entertainer of the year. The choice is based on seeing concerts by both country stars here this year.
"I"ve been real fortunate to get to collaborate with some great artists, but doing this song with Eric was truly magical," said Urban in a release from the CMA. "It"s an incredible piece of songwriting, and we"re both so grateful it"s resonated the way it has!""
Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye were just 17 when they wrote "Girl in a Country Song,"" which takes aim at gender stereotypes in the genre. The award is shared by director TK McKamy.
"This video was so much fun, but it also got a lot of people talking and it says some stuff about what makes girls matter,"" Dye said in the CMA release. "I"m honored people saw it as we meant it: more than a joke, but proof you can speak your mind and not be mean."
