Miami Heat President Pat Riley"s Praise Of Golden State Warriors Is Manipulative

Getty Images

Pat Riley recently said that the Golden State Warriors have dynastic potential, and he is right about that. However, he is also being competitive. Riley is obviously someone who knows a thing or two about dynasties. He was a part of one while coachingMagic Johnsons Los Angeles Lakers and witnessed one in the Chicago Bullswhen leading theNew York Knicks.

Riley even went so far as to compare Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson to Jerry West and Gail Goodrich as one of the best backcourts of all time. Here is the thing. Of course, Riley doesnt want to say anything that cant be backed up by facts, but he is also an arrogant guy who has faith in his team building abilities. He probably thinks the Miami Heatwill be back on top of the basketball world in the next two to three years, and he is trying to inflate the Warriors egos in the hopes that theyll lose some playoff games. The following comments to me are manipulative on Rileys part.

They are in the beginning of something that can be dynastic, he said to ESPN. Theyre in the beginning stages of it, and thats the scary part, versus somebody that catches lightning in a bottle one time. Theyre at the beginning because all of their key players, all of them, are young and theyre talented. The ones that arent have what I call youth age, like Andre Iguodala, Andrew Bogut, Shaun Livingston those guys bring an element to the team is incredible.

Riley is right about the Warriors youth; however, he also knows how fragile championship chemistry is. The Heats path towards contention still appears unclear to me, but the team president certainly has some trade targets and free agents that h**l be looking at in the next few seasons. Kevin Durant will obviously be on top of the Heats list, but they might have to get in line behind the Oklahoma City Thunder and Washington Wizardsfor a meeting. The main point is that Riley believes what he says about the Warriors while also secretly hoping that he is setting them up for a fall from grace. One injury can change everything in the NBA landscape, and that is just the sad reality of the world we live in. Riley knows this and is using it to his advantage.
