Tonight Alejandro G Irritusbrutal, beautiful survival drama The Revenant received its UK premierein London"s Leicester Square (the film opens in cinemas around thecountry tomorrow). You can watch all the action from the red carpetwith our exclusive livestream at the top of the article.
Basedon a true story, the film starsLeonardoDiCaprioas 19th-century fur trapper andfrontiersman Hugh Glass. Mauled by a bear, forced to witness themurder of his son, then abandoned and left for dead by an unscrupulouscompanion (Hardy), Glass must fight his way back from the brink ofdeath, and undertake a perilous journey across the freezing NorthAmerican wilderness.
The film has crushed its competition this awards season, todaypicking up12Oscar nominations among them nods for Best Picture, BestDirector, and Best Actor (Leonardo DiCaprio) to add to the threeGolden Globes it has already won.
Hardy, who was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role asthe villainous Fitzgerald, also had a starring role in a second BestPicture nominee, George Millers Mad Max: Fury Road but tonight,he denied that this would leave him feeling conflicted come Oscars night.
Its just great that everyone [who worked on both films] will be inthat room together, celebrating their work, he told reporters on thepremiere red carpet. Theres lots of people who wont be in that room.
His Revenant co-star Domhnall Gleeson, who stars in the film asCaptain Andrew Henry, has also been linked to multiple Oscar-nominatedfilms. As well as starring in The Revenant, Gleeson has had key partsin ExMachina, Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Brooklyn.
Asked if the famously gruelling Revenant shoot meant that the filmwas the most challenging of the bunch, he said this wasn"tneccessarily the case.
You know, Im not so sure, he told The Telegraph. They were alldifficult in different ways. Ex Machina was a much shorter shoot, butpsychologically was so intense. And I was in every scene of that, sowas carrying that a lot.
They all had their own challenges actually. I wouldnt say any wasmore difficult than the other. But certainly [The Revenant] was thelongest and the most physically taxing. And in terms of the journey hegoes on, Andrew Henry in The Revenant was a wonderful character. Weshot in sequence, so it was nice to be able to build on what wed done before.
Gleeson also paid tribute to his Harry Potter and the DeathlyHallows co-star Alan Rickman, whose death from cancer wasreported earlier today, saying that although he never personallyfilmed scenes alongside the actor, his talent would be greatly missed.
