With the novel clocking in at an infamous 1,300 pages, it would be fair to guess that many viewers had not read War And Peace before tuning in to the BBC"s new adaptation.
However, it wasn"t the plot of Leo Tolstoy"s epic tale which caused confusion last night, but rather the very familiar faces in the cast who are also appearing in another BBC One historical drama, Dickensian.
Bewildered fans took to Twitter to express their surprise at seeing actors and actresses in the epic Russian costume drama - just days after they were on the streets of Victorian England.

Actor Stephen Rea, who plays Inspector Bucket in Dickensian, also stars as Prince Vassily Kuragin in Andrew Davies"s adaptation of War And Peace.
In Dickensian, which premiered on BBC One on Boxing Day, viewers saw Rea investigating the murder of Scrooge"s business partner, Jacob Marley, while in War and Peace he was seen on screen discussing wills.
Viewer Loosea tweeted: "#WarandPeace or am I watching #Dickensian all the actors rolling into one."

But some viewers were hoping for more screen time for one cast member, actor James Norton, who plays Prince Andrei in War And Peace, and has previously starred in Happy Valley and Grantchester.
Many have been praising the 30-year-old"s good looks, particularly his hair and strong jawline, as he appears set to fill the void left by actor Aidan Turner after his turn in Poldark last year.

In Grantchester scenes shot in the River Cam in Cambridgeshire last autumn, Norton was seen stripping down to his underwear for a swim
Whilst AllForUSophia tweeted hopefully: "There is a #JamesNorton scything scene in #WarAndPeace right?" as she referred to the scene where Aidan Turner stripped off in Poldark.
Norton is expected to remain fully clothed in the next five episodes of War and Peace, but fans of the actor will be hoping to see more of their favourite character when he is back on the BBC later in the year as the vicar in the detective series Grantchester.
