Front Porch Reflections: Snow cream, anyone?

Now, heres a question for you.

How many remember the snow cream from yesteryear?

A check around the office got mixed results. Some had never heard of it. Some had.

One person, Belinda Webb, said her family still makes that delicious concoction with snow.

My mother routinely made it when we had a substantial snowfall.

In fact, other than not having to go to school, the anticipation of the snow cream was the most exciting part of a big snowfall. It was even above sleigh riding, snow ball fighting and building a snow man.

After a day playing outside in the snow, and that usually meant all day, snow cream was about the best thing imaginable.

We had snow cream every winter, without fail.

What I cant figure out is why this little piece of heaven has been lost over the years.

I remember on several occasions when my children were small thinking about it.

Man, I think Ill make some cream, I told myself. The kids will love it.

But for the life of me, I could not remember how to make it. At that time, of course, we did not have computers or the internet, so such information was simply not available unless you knew someone who had the recipe.

As has often been the case, so many of the recipes for various dishes and treats my ancestors made are lost. Well, they did not have recipes actually written down, they just knew as if by instinct how to create it.

Out of curiosity, I Googled snow cream and plenty of recipes showed up. So its certainly not a lost art at all.

Anyone who has not tried this should do it. Do it today. The recipe is simple, and this is the one that Belinda uses. Either milk or sweet condensed milk can be used, then some vanilla, maybe a teaspoon, a little sugar if you like and then gather a big bowl full of freshly fallen, clean snow.

Kind of fold or mix the milk with the sugar and vanilla into the snow until its evenly spread.

You will be surprised at how great it tastes, kind of like ice cream, only better!

Now, my mother squirted some chocolate syrup into hers, which is the way we liked it.

You can add sprinkles if you want, or about anything for that matter. Experiment until you get the right combination.

Belinda has two daughters and they prefer the chocolate syrup.

With the heavy snow that is predicted today, plenty of bowls of snow cream should be easy to make. And there should be plenty left over for the snowman, snow ball fights and sleigh riding.

By the way, for those parents who think exposure to the cold will cause colds, thats a myth. Catching a virus from another person causes colds.

Playing in the cold is healthy if youre dressed appropriately. No, not like little Richie in A Christmas Story, just common sense clothing, including gloves and hat.

Kids need to be outside playing in the snow. They can watch TV, and eat snow cream, after dark.

You know what? Adults need to be outside playing the snow as well.

Come on, get out there.

Be a kid again.

Enjoy these times.

Make great memories.

And for crying out loud, make some snow cream.
