Amateur and shock Open Championship joint-leader Paul Dunne insists he can make history by holding his nerve to lift The Claret Jug, writes James Nursey at St Andrews.
Jason Day and Louis Oosthuizen are alongside the 22-year-old at the top of the leaderboard on 12-under after Sunday"s weather-delayed third round, but there are then SIXTEEN players within four shots of that trio going into Manic Monday.
Irish amateur Dunne, a 1500-1 shot last week, carded a bogey-free 66 and when asked if he could win, replied: I dont see why not.
Im well capable of shooting the scores that I need to win if everyone else doesnt play their best.
Hopefully, I play great again and post a good number.
Swinging 60s: Dunne is the first amateur EVER to shoot three sub-70 rounds in a St Andrews Open
Its surreal Im leading The Open, but if we were playing an amateur event here, I wouldnt be too surprised by the scores I shot.
Its just lucky that it happens to be in the biggest event in the world.
Dunne is the first amateur to shoot three successive Open rounds in the 60s after going 69, 69, 66.
His Sunday heroics were the lowest round by an amateur EVER in an Open at St Andrews.
If successful on Monday, Dunne will become the first non-professional to win since Bobby Jones way back in 1930.
But he will obviously be unable to collect the winners cheque of 1.15million - that will go to the runner-up instead.
While overnight leader Dustin Johnson fell away with a third round 75, two-time Open champ Padraig Harrington is 10-under in fifth spot behind Grand Slam hopeful Jordan Spieth.
Justin Rose, tied sixth, is the highest-placed Briton on nine-under alongside English compatriot Danny Willett, who shot a level-par 72.
