People gathered at American Legion Post in Brentwood this Fourth of July for a flag retirement ceremony. Members of the Vietnam Veterans Motorcycle club inspected the flag, then burned it.
They raised a new flag in its place.
Organizers say this is a good way to teach people about the proper way to dispose of an American flag.
According to the American Legion the "Ceremony for Disposal of Unserviceable Flags" was outlined in 1937. The ceremony has been an integral part of American Legion ritual ever since. During the ceremony, the flag is folded properly and burned. During the burning, those in attendance, salute the flag and recite the Pledge of Allegiance.
