A very small earthquake was centered near Plymouth, New Hampshire, just before 8 a.m. Tuesday.

The quake, with a magnitude of 1.5, was centered 3 kilometers southeast of Plymouth, the U.S. Geological Service said.

Small quakes are common in New England, the USGS said.

"Moderately damaging earthquakes strike somewhere in the region every few decades, and smaller earthquakes are felt roughly twice a year," according to a post on its website.

The largest known New England earthquakes occurred in 1638 (magnitude 6.5) in Vermont or New Hampshire, and in 1755 (magnitude 5.8) offshore of Cape Ann.
