QB Bryce Petty wants to 'prove to the 31 other teams what they're missing'

FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- A few takeaways from Bryce Petty's conference call Saturday with New York reporters:

  • Petty doesn't like the perception he's a system quarterback. "It's all about the person," he said. "My desire is to be the best, regardless of what system I'm in. What I was asked to do in college was different, but it's not because I couldn't do a pro-style offense or a West Coast offense or whatever you want to call it. That's what I was asked to do, so I did it."

  • Petty was projected by some draft experts as a second-round pick, so he had to be disappointed by his fall to the fourth. He didn't sound like it, though. He insisted it didn't rattle him. "No, not at all," he said. "That's part of it, when people question you. My job is to prove to the 31 other teams what they're missing out on. ... My confidence is never shaken."

  • He visited the Jets' facility and it sounds like he clicked with Todd Bowles and offensive coordinator Chan Gailey. Petty said it "kind of felt like home." He also liked what he heard from an X's and O's standpoint. "Actually, when I came up for my visit, we did a little bit of a mini-install, and there was actually a lot of the same dynamics or schemes that we had at Baylor," he said. That could help his transition from Baylor's uptempo, no-huddle offense to a conventional system.

  • Petty said he has "no idea" about his role. "Starter, backup, whatever it is, that's up to the coaches," he said. "My job is to have a great attitude about it and be a great teammate and learn all I can from the guys who have been there and done that."
