School closings: Snow storm keeps Forest Hills, Rockford, other kids home ...

GRAND RAPIDS, MI - Thousands of West Michigan students will remain home Wednesday, Nov. 19, for a second consecutive day because of fallout from an early snow storm that blasted the region but others are headed back to class.

While Grand Rapids, Kentwood, Grandville, Wyoming, Zeeland and Hudsonville, were among school districts able to reopen on Wednesday, multiple other districts such as Forest Hills, Rockford, Coopersville, Northview and Lowell remain close because of road conditions spurring safety concerns.

"Most side and county roads, and subdivisions are still unsafe," said Rockford Superintendent Mike Shibler about why their 8,000 students will remain home.

Forest Hills Superintendent Dan Behm said road conditions are also keeping their 10,000 students out of class.

"Roads still are not in good condition in our large and geographically diverse community," he said.

Kent County Road Commission officials said Tuesday because the snow has not quit, they have focused on the main roads. Jerry Byrne, deputy managing director, said they had not gotten into very many neighborhoods at all.

But other school districts such as Wyoming say appropriate safety concerns regarding roads and sidewalks have been addressed to their satisfaction.

Schools are allowed six days of canceled classes without financial penalty, according to the Michigan Department of Education. Once systems exceed six snow days, they are required to make up the days missed.

Single digit wind chills and few more inches of snow is on tap for Wednesday, according to forecasts.
