Services have been restored for AT&T customers after an outage left thousands of users without access to internet,phone and TVservices.
WSMV engineers contacted AT&T and learned that there was a connectivity issue at a major hub that affected thousands across the southeastern United States.
AT&T sent Channel 4 a statement concerning the outage:
"Wireless and wireline service has been restored for all customers in parts of the Southeast affected by a hardware-related network issue. Our engineers completed repairs and service is running normally. We apologize for any inconvenience."
The interruption in services was first reported around 2 p.m. Tuesday. Services did not begin to return until around 7 p.m.
The outages were reported in the Nashville, Chattanooga and Knoxville areas in Tennessee. Outages are also reported in Huntsville, AL, and Bowling Green, Lexington, and Louisville, KY.
Smaller outages were also reported in Indianapolis, Chicago, Columbus and Cleveland, OH, Washington, DC, New York City, Los Angeles and San Francisco.
More than 11,000 AT&T customers reported outages to DownDetector.com, an independent website that tracks outages for various services.
AT&T wasn"t the only company to experience issues Tuesday. Thousands of customers also reported outages from Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile.Verizon officials blamed a connectivity issue.
In a statement, Kentucky technology officials said AT&T told them the outage was due to a fiber cut in the western part of the state.An AT&T spokesperson said they cannot confirm those details.
Metro Nashville Public Schools said it did not experienced any issues Tuesday, but a district spokesperson said they would reevaluate Wednesday for the first day of school.
The Metro Nashville Police Department and the Nashville Fire Department were without internet service, but 911 services were still working.
No issues were reported at the Nashville International Airport.
Computers were down at many stores at the Opry Mills mall, meaning customers could only pay with cash.
An internet outage was also reported at the offices of the CoolSprings Galleria in Franklin, but the status of individual stores is unknown.
The Mall at Green Hills was not affected by the AT&T outage, but 30 stores were without power after a vehicle hit a power line.
Customers at a Mapco gas station in the 4300 block of West End could not make any purchases at all because the internet was down.
A spokesperson with the Department of Homeland Security said they are not investigating the outage.
An AT&T spokesperson said this was not a cyber attack or hack. They said they are working to investigate the cause of the outage.
