Brooks Laich, a former standout for the Western Hockey League Seattle Thunderbirds who plays for the NHL Washington Capitals, and dancer-actress Julianne Hough plan to marry.

Laich, 32, and Hough, 27, a two-time champion on ABCs Dancing With the Stars, each tweeted a link to a photo of the couple with the same message Tuesday: We are overwhelmed with joy and excitement to share with you our recent engagement! #fiance #love

Hough became a judge on Dancing With the Stars after her victories.

Laich played for the Thunderbirds from 2001 to 2003 and scored 63 goals in 107 games. He has 132 goals in 683 games for the Capitals.

Track and fieldCoe wins IAAF election

Sebastian Coe of Britain has won a four-year term as president of the governing body for track and field, beating Sergei Bubka 115-92 in an election in Beijing.

The election was set against a backdrop of intense criticism of the IAAF after media reports it has failed to act on evidence of widespread blood doping.

The 58-year-old Coe, a two-time 1,500-meters Olympic champion, replaces Lamine Diack, 82, who is stepping down after 16 years.

College footballNCAA clears Russell to play

Notre Dame cornerback KeiVarae Russell, a graduate of Mariner High School in Everett, has been fully cleared by the NCAA to play this season, Fighting Irish coach Brian Kelly said.

Russell, a senior, missed the 2014 season. He was held out of practices last August while being investigated for possible academic dishonesty before eventually being suspended from the university.

BYU loses TE for season

Brigham Young tight end Steven Richards is out for the season after suffering a knee injury Monday in practice. The redshirt freshman is scheduled for surgery on his right knee.

Winger Memphis Depay had two goals and an assist to lead host Manchester United of England to a 3-1 victory over Bruges of Belgium in the first leg of their playoff.

Manchester United moved closer to qualification for the lucrative UEFA Champions League group stage.

There were five home-and-home playoff first legs and the home team won each match. The second-leg matches are next Wednesday.

FC Astana gave itself a solid chance of becoming the first Kazakh team to reach the Champions League group stage by beating APOEL Nicosia of Cyprus 1-0.

Late goals were a theme in other first-leg matches. Lazio of Italy beat Bayer Leverkusen of Germany 1-0 on Keitas 77th-minute goal; Islam Slimani struck an 82nd-minute winner for Sporting Lisbon of Portugal in a 2-1 victory over CSKA Moscow; and BATE Borisov of Belarus beat Partizan of Serbia 1-0 on Mikhail Gordeichuks 75th-minute goal.

U.S., Canada are in Group A

The U.S. mens team has been drawn into a group with Canada, Cuba and Panama for CONCACAF Olympic qualifying for next years Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The United States will be in Group A and open with two matches at Sporting Park in Kansas City, Kan., against Canada on Oct.
