ALPHARETTA, Ga. (WXIA-TV) -- A large section of Alpharetta will be difficult or impossible to drive through for several hours beginning Saturday morning, because of the Brown funeral and because of a big, annual event in Alpharetta just down the street from the church.

The event is Alpharetta"s 63rd annual Old Soldiers Day event, honoring U.S. military veterans.

The event attracts thousands of people every year.

Police were standing by Friday night to close lanes and streets in the downtown area of Alpharetta, beginning at dawn.

Traffic will be re-routed first for the 5k and 10k foot races, then for the outdoor memorial service, and then for the big parade that travels along Roswell St. and also along Old Milton Parkway.

And just to the east of all of that, police will also be closing lanes and at least one street, Webb Bridge Road, in and around the site of the Brown funeral at Saint James United Methodist Church, at Webb Bridge Road and Westside Parkway.

Hundreds of mourners, plus unknown numbers of on-lookers, will be arriving at the church at the same time Saturday morning that huge crowds will be gathering for the Old Soldiers Day race, service and parade just to the west. The parade and the funeral will be taking place at the same time, late in the morning.

So getting to either event might take extra time, and getting through Alpharetta might be difficult or impossible until early or mid afternoon.

The area where there will be street closures and lane closures and more traffic congestion than normal is generally in the area from GA 400, west to Wills Road -- along GA Highway 120/Old Milton Parkway, and along Webb Bridge Road/ Academy Street/Milton Street.

Again, traffic may start clearing up by mid afternoon -- after a sad and solemn funeral and an important salute to our veterans.
