They made a little bit of history last night on American Idol (2.6/8), andIm not talking about that rendition of Queens Bohemian Rhapsody. No, for the first time ever on Foxs competition show, a past contestant joined the judges table as Season 8 runner-up Adam Lambert subbed for Keith Urban. The sometimes-Queen singer, who has been back on Idol several times before, certainly proved an inspiration to several of those hoping to make it this season.
Ratingswise, Lambert did not provide such a lift, as the show had its first downturn of the new season so far. The two-hour Brooklyn auditions show dropped 13% from last weeks Season 14 premiere Part 2 fast nationals to fast nationals. As we saw a rise to a 3.1 in the final numbers for last Thursdays Idol, theyll likely be an adjustment this week too.
Night-to-night, the show was basically steady with Wednesdays airing, seeing just a 10% slip. Season-to-season, last night Idol was down 23% from the final nationals of the second show of the second week of Season 13. Last nights Idol was the highest-rated show of the night and the second most watched after the 12.06 million who tuned in for aThe Big Bang Theory (2.5/8) repeat. Overall, Fox won the night inadults 18-49 and total viewers with 10.36 million.
There was another two-hour reality competition show on TV last night with The Taste (0.9/3). Never a blockbuster, the ABC series was even with the season high of its January 8 show. ABC ended the night with a How To Get Away With Murder (0.7/2) repeat.
Flat may have been what NBC and CBS would have liked for their Thursday offerings instead what they got was down. After severalshows seeingrises on winter break returns or against New Years Day airings, gravity kicked in last night.
On CBS, without a new Big Bang Theorykicking off the night, Mom (2.4/8) was off11% fromlast weeks season high. Following that lead-in,Two And A Half Men (2.1/6) slipped 9% whilefreshman The McCarthys (1.5/4) and Elementary (1.3/4) tumbled 12% and 13%, respectively. NBC saw a double-digit downward turn all around:Its reality offering The Biggest Loser (1.1/4) lost 15% from its January 8 show; the now-canned Bad Judge (0.7/2) and A To Z (0.5/2) fell 13% and 17%, respectively, from last week; andthe also-on-the-way-out Parenthood (1.2/4) was down 14%.
The CWs inauguralWorld Dog Awards (0.4/1) fetched a fairly toothy ratings result that matched what the network got for the Critics Choice Movie Awards, which were on A& E Network last night but pulled in a strong 1.92 million viewers.
