Is Tara Reid too skinny? Who cares? Time to stop the shaming

One hot New Hampshire summer when I was 6, my family was crowded around our red Formica table eating lunch. As I reached for a Pringle, my grandmother slapped my hand away.

Not for you! she scolded, grabbing my little leg. Look at these knees! You dont need chips. You need blueberries.

Thats the earliest memory I have of someone scolding me for my weight. Ive dealt with it every day since; I dont make any excuses for my being overweight. Yes, its partially medical, but do I need to explain that? No.

In fact, years of experience have taught me that the only person I need to answer to is me.

Which is why it pained me when I saw people lashing out against Tara Reid because she looks too skinny in a photo she tweeted of herself in a bikini while on a recent trip to Miami.

Thats right: It doesnt work one way. Theres more to the world of online trolling than fat shaming. People are increasingly being called out for how skinny they are, as any of severalrecent viral stories can tell us.

What right do we have to critique her? Reid is living life the way she wants, as she always has. And to veil criticisms with concern?

Is she healthy? Is she on drugs? Someone put on weight.

For some reason, commenters think slathering on guilt will make people want to change.

We posted the story about Reid's weight on the Palm Beach Post Facebook page. Here are some of the reactions (read more here):

  • Mary Anne Lawless: OMG stop bullying women about their bodies!
  • Jennifer Sampson: Stop fat shaming. Stop skinny shaming. Love one another. In all their sizes. You don't know their stories. Love them anyway.
  • Tonya Meese Halpert: And if she gains 10lbs she is to fat!! Stop judging... live and love people
  • Karen Silverthorn: I think Tara Reid is fun and spunky. I am sure she is much harder on herself than any of you realize. Some people aren't happy with themselves so they have to make nasty comments about someone else. She looks happy so I am happy for her.

We want to you share your thoughts. Comment here and we could add it to our list.
