Once the Cowboys re-signed free agent starting right tackle Doug Free to a three-year, $15 million contract last week, the writing was on the wall for Parnell. And Parnell received a bigger deal than Free. Parnells is a five-year, $32 million deal.

Its not a surprise that Parnell received a bigger contract than Free. Parnell was considered one of the top offensive tackles on the open market and other teams had expressedinterest in him. Free, who had previously taken a pay cut to stay with the Cowboys, wanted to remain in Dallas and was willing to give up some money he likely could have received on the open market to remain a part of one of the leagues top offensive lines.

The Cowboys will now have to identify another swing tackle who can give them depth at both spots.

Parnell started five games last season at right tackle in place of Free, who was dealing with foot and ankle injuries. Parnell also started both of the Cowboys playoff games at right tackle and showed teams he could be a starter in this league.

The Cowboys signed Parnell, a former college basketball player at Mississippi, as more of a project in 2010and he quickly won the favor of owner Jerry Jones. But Parnell developed on the filed and put himself in position this offseason to cash in on a starting job with the Jaguars.

The last time the Jaguars signed a Cowboys free agent at that kind of price didnt work out so well for Jacksonville. The Jaguars signed Cowboys free agent receiver Laurent Robinson to a five-year, $32.5 million deal during free agency in 2012. But Robinson was cut after only one season in Jacksonville after suffering multiple concussions.
