Why it's so hard to beat Scientology

Going Clear, the Alex Gibney documentary about Scientologythataired on HBO last night, doesnt contain much thats new to anyone who has read the Tampa Bay Timess investigations of the organization or Lawrence Wrightsmasterful history of it. But however accidentally, Going Clear is an interesting illustration of just how hard it is to pursue the two-pronged strategy thats necessary to dismantle any powerful, dangerous group: stripping it of its finances and power, and freeing its members of its influence. Gibneys film is full of the sort of mockery that has helped make Scientology a marginal, if wealthy, organization with a negligible membership. What it lacks is empathy for the individuals who are still members of Scientology and an understanding of what might make them stay or help them leave.

I mean, if you go to a Christian or a Jew or a Muslim and ask them what do you believe, they can basically describe the most important parts of their religion in a minute or two, Tony Ortega, who started covering Scientology in 1995 when he was at the Phoenix New Times, says at one point in Going Clear. Well, what does a Scientologist believe? You need to be a Scientologist for seven or eight years, and in for a couple hundred thousand dollars before you finally learn this backstory of Xenu the Galactic Overlord. Now, if you were told that on day one, how many people would join? But if they were up front about it, Id have more respect for them. But its that kind of bait and switch. People are told its an applied philosophy to help you with your communication. Oh yeah? So why is Tom Cruise paying a thousand bucks to have invisible aliens pulled out of his body?

Thats the sort of argument thats tremendously satisfying to hear if youre outside Scientology and feeling proud of yourself for not having fallen for the groups recruiting methods. And certainly, given the power the organization exerts and the alleged abuses it carries out, Scientology as an organization is a worthy target. But theres a difference between convincing people outside of Scientology including the Internal Revenue Service that the church is a confidencescheme rather than a genuine religious organization and convincing the people who have dedicated decades of their lives to Scientology that they should, and can, leave.

The explosive new documentary "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief," debuted at the Sundance Film Festival on January 25. In these three clips from the film, former members describe joining the controversial religion and their attempts to escape (The Washington Post)

Showing non-believers videos of Scientology convocations, or explaining L. Ron Hubbards theories of the origins of the universe, might help with the former goal. The latter, though, requires something entirely different from us: understanding. Instead of mocking Scientology rituals or Tom Cruise or John Travoltas testimonials, it demands that we understand why thosethings might be meaningful to church members. Telling us lurid stories about people physically fighting each other to be allowed to stay in Sea Org, the churchs extremely ascetic priesthood, doesnt explain the reasons for their attachment. Persuading members of the groupto leave requires us to understand that something other than mere foolishness or naivete led them to Scientology in the first place.

For some, Scientology seems like a way to do good. As Tracy Ekstand, a former member of Scientologys Sea Org, told my colleague Sarah Pulliam Bailey:I dont like it when people think, How could you fall for such a fairy tale? I think the people who are there are sincere and think theyre doing a Peace Corps thing making a better world. Going Clear addresses this idea occasionally. I was deeply convinced that we were going to save the world. I considered myself tremendously fortunate to be in that position,Hana Eltringham Whitfield explains in the film.

When political parties seem corrupt and it feels as though movement politics are stalled, it makes sense that some people with strong social consciences might be attracted to a vision ofA world without criminality, a world without war, and a world without insanity, as John Travolta describes Scientology in footage from an interview that appears in Going Clear. I know of no other group where their goals were that clear.

For others, Scientologys crusade against psychiatric drugs (which doesnt get much mention in the movie) seems like a focal point. In Going Clear, Wrights book of the same name, former Scientologist and Oscar-winning producer and director Paul Haggis explained that for him, the campaign against psychiatric medicine dovetailed with his sense that had he grown up in another time, he might have been medicated because of his tendency to daydream. Wright describes the actress Kirstie Alley sobbing so hard she could barely speak as she insisted during a Florida hearing that psychiatric drugs turned a number of children suicidal.

Alex Gibney's "Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief" premiered at the Sundance Festival despite criticism from the Church of Scientology. (Reuters)

Like the anti-vaccine movement, these sentiments are undeniably harmful: The American Psychiatric Association has had to push back against Scientology-promoted falsehoods. But while its easy to demonize people who oppose both vaccination and necessary psychiatric medication, some people in those camps are driven by real uncertainty and fear, fueled by the rise of autism diagnoses and the increased use of psychiatric medication, particularly to treat children. At least when it comes to autism, some of the leading proponents of vaccination say its important to address those fears rather than to mock them. The same may be true for Scientology-promulgated fear of psychiatric treatment.

And for many, the gateway into Scientology is simply a problem that no one else has helped them to address. Recruiters are supposed to, as Wright explains in Going Clear, find the ruin that is, the problem most on the mind of the potential recruit.

As long as the outside world fails to resolve those ruins,to feed that need todo good or to address the fears of those who are terrified of parts of the medical establishment, Scientology will continue to have some appeal. Journalists and filmmakers such as Wright, Gibney and Ortega will be able to keep pushing Scientology to the margins by mocking it. But to free the people held in its prison of belief, well have to take that belief seriously enough to help them find better options.

WrestleMania 31 Live Blog and Results

The winners of Sting vs. Triple H, Rusev vs. Cena, Undertaker vs. Bray Wyatt, Lesnar vs. Reigns and more! By Matt Fowler

It's WrestleMania 31 time!

Sting had his first (and last?) match in the WWE! The Undertaker returned after his big loss to Brock Lesnar last year to face Bray Wyatt! John Cena battled to crush the undefeated Rusev! The Rock showed up with Ronda Rousey (after hosting SNL last night)! And the Brock Lesnar/Roman Reigns match had a very surprising outcome! Let's get to it!

WrestleMania Dream Matches the Never Happened

Fatal 4-Way Tag Match

It's cool that the Usos got to walk that WrestleMania asile despite Jay's shoulder injury. Jimmy competed alone for most of the match due to Jay "being taken out of the match" early. A nice, fast-moving high-energy opener to reward the sun-soaked crowd. And considering the amount of participants - four teams, Natalya, Torito, Naomi - it came off well. In an ideal world, tag titles would be on the main show, but it was creative for what it was. A lot of chaos, some fun spots (loved the Sharpshooter on Torito), and a solid win for Cesaro and Kidd, who I hope continue to dominate the tag team ranks.

Winners: Cesaro and Tyson Kidd

Andre the Giant Memorial Battle Royal

With Cesaro's big Battle Royal win not pushing him up to, or even adjacent to, the top last year like some expected, this event has already lost some of its luster. Winning it essentially doesn't guarantee anything. Like winning Tough Enough. So each year the winner will probably be "whoever's sort of hot at the moment but may not be a month from now." Or to reward veterans (like Big Show) with something. Smartly done though, it can be used like the Rumble. To facilitate feuds, start new angles, end rivalries, etc.

Some nice beats here. Miz and Mizdow eliminating Alex Riley, Bo Dallas eliminating himself, Hitami and Kidd kicking each other (and Big Show eliminating Hideo - boooo!), Cesaro eliminating Kane, Cesaro *almost* eliminating Big Show, Mizdow refusing to help Miz fight Big Show, Mizdow eliminating Miz. It was all booked waaaaay better than the Rumble, for sure.

Big Show winning was a big let down, for sure, but even I, given the characters, couldn't figure out a way to make Mizdow go over him. Though I would have loved for it to happen. The final minutes of this one were a lot of fun. I suppose, in the end, it'd be weird if Big Show never won the Andre Battle Royal. Especially since we know it's not necessarily the "thing to help elevate new stars."

#RIPAxelMania

Winner: The Big Show

Intercontinental Title Match

YES! YES! YES!

So Bryan won after a really fun "HeadbuttMania" finish. It came down to him and Ziggler at the top of the ladder in the end and The Goat's cranium was just too strong. Putting the Ladder Match first was smart. It pumped up the crowd and it separated Bryan's win (or potential loss, if they wanted to create an ugly atmosphere) as far a possible from Reigns and Lesnar in the main event.

A nicely worked, hard-hitting spotfest. Ambrose took a nasty looking powerbomb onto a ladder on the outside of the ring, which took him out of the match essentially. He looked legit banged up.

Overall, a nice way to open the show - give the most popular guy in the company a huge win while removing the taste of Big Show's pre-show win. The match was a bit crowded, but everyone was so good in it that it played super-smooth - rough landings and all.

Winner: Daniel Bryan

Randy Orton vs. Seth Rollins

The crowd really stayed alive for this one. Well done contest. I'm digging the bright, sunshine-y aspect of the matches this year. Reminds me of WrestleMania IX. It might take away some of the mystique later on with the entrances, but I appreciate everything feeling different.

AND THAT WAS ONE OF THE MOST F'N FUN RKOS EVER! Off the curb stomp, tossing Rollins way high up in the air. I loved it. the press box here at Levi's Stadium popped HUGE for that. Sure, Rollins could have gone over Orton, but Rollins is still the MITB case holder and the match is far enough removed from the main event that he could still play a huge roll in the Brock/Roman finish. Plus, the pattern usually is for the guy who's about to become world champ to lose a lot before he cashes in big.

Another strong match. The build up to the match over the past month wasn't the best, but the match told a great story and had a tremendous finish. Rollins lost but he comes out unscathed.

Winner: Randy Orton

Sting vs. Triple H

Okay, so Sting lost. That was very surprising. It seemed like since this was his first match in the WWE it was almost a guaranteed win. Of course, Triple H has also lost his last four or so matches. So maybe wanted to keep him looking strong from the standpoint that he's still going to wrestle occasionally and it needs to remain a big deal.

Also, this was booked, in the build, as WWE vs. WCW. So WCW, as a concept, couldn't really go over here. I'm just explaining things somewhat rationally to mask my disappointment over Stinger's loss.

It was also weird because one of the reasons we assumed Sting didn't face Undertaker this year was because neither he or Taker could lose.

The first half of the match was a slower, more traditional affair designed to played to Sting's strengths as a guy nearing 60. Then DX ran out to save Hunter from the Scorpion Deathlock! And we got a huge top rope splash by Sting on all of WCW's old adversaries! Then the NWO came out! Then everything became beautiful, over-stuffed chaos! It basically became a microcosm of the Monday Night Wars. It was a messy affair, but - for heaven's sake - Hogan took a bump! Scott Hall took a bump! HBK super kicked Sting! Sting's bat smashed Hunter's sledgehammer! I understand the ending, and that WCW couldn't triumph over WWE, but we all still wanted that big Sting win! In the end, I think the match was so much fun that most everyone will overlook the very end and the actual winner.

Also, sure, the Terminator Genisys cross-promotion with Paramount makes no sense, story-wise. Or even Triple H-wise. But who wouldn't want to walk to the ring dressed like a cyber-barbarian? And Sting really has nothing to do with kabuki drum lines. But, despite out-of-sorts context, the entrances were very cool. Obvious product endorsement aside.

Winner: Triple H

AJ Lee and Paige vs. The Bella Twins

Probably the best WrestleMania outing the Divas have had in years (considering the blip of a match last year and getting totally cut the year before). The most standard match so far, but still a good effort by all involved. The ending seemed to be leading to a typical Bella cheat-win, but Team Freak and Geek pulled it out and came out with the "W." Given all that happened on the post-Mania RAW last year, this was a nice full-circle culmination of a match. Two separate feuds basically converged here (though how Nikki vs. Brie actually ended never got sorted out) and the fan-favorite alterna-babes go the big win. Nikki tapped to the Black Widow too. I'm glad it wasn't a roll-up.

Winners: AJ Lee and Paige

Rusev vs. John Cena

Dammit, a win for the U.S. that involves Lana getting hurt is no kind of victory. For shame! No one really liked that finish. Despite Cena having patriotism in his corner, Cena-Hate is the strongest force on Earth. And the crowd, thankfully, remembered to sing "JOHN CENA SUUUUCKS" along with his theme song when he came out. A trend that began on the post-Mania RAW last year.

A good showing by Rusev, but what happens to him now? No U.S. title. No win streak. No Lana. She's got to leave for a month or so to shoot a WWE Studios movie so now there's a rift. When she returns, will they still be a thing? I worry for him now.

This was mostly a typical Cena match. Not terrible, but nothing really got better than Rusev's entrance, honestly (though Cena's Springboard Stunner was new!). Lana coming out first with those soldiers and then Rusev on top of that freakin' tank! That was gold!

Winner: John Cena

The Rock and Ronda Rousey Segment

A bit of unexpected awesomeness - with a little Furious 7 flavor to it. Triple H and Steph came (at first, it seemed, out of character) to lay into the crowd and gloat about Hunter's big win over Sting. Out came The Rock (who must have been jetted out quick after hosting SNL last night) to verbally lay into Trips and the Billion Dollar Princess. It wasn't long before Steph slapped Rock, causing him to rethink both his motives and strategy.

AS LUCK WOULD HAVE IT, Rock's co-star and UFC sensation Ronda Rousey was at ringside. He invited her into the ring and Rocky and Rousey proceeded to layeth a serving of smack down on Hunter and Steph. Steph escaped mostly unscathed, but Hunter took a judo flip from Ronda. Totally harmless, but also good times. And perhaps a set up for Rock vs. Hunter at Mania 32. Though the idea mostly being tossed around is Rock vs. Brock.

The Undertaker vs. Bray Wyatt

Just Undertaker being back and looking healthy was the ultimate victory here (he was selling during the match, not "exhausted" people). The match itself was fine. It picked up in the final five minuets. Taker doing his "sit up" during Bray's upside-down creepy crawly handstand was an amazing moment. So overall it was just awesome to see Undertaker back. And facing Bray. We were all clapping and popping for very basic things - like Taker going "Old School." A move he didn't even get to do last year. Kick outs for both the Tombstone and Sister Abigail took things down to the wire. Taker then nailed a second Tombstone for the win.

A lot of the crowd wanted Bray to win and that certainly seemed possible now that the "streak" was no longer a thing. But Taker's need to rebound after last year's big fall overtook everything else in the end and the Dead Man prevailed.

Winner: The Undertaker

Brock Lesnar vs. Roman Reigns

That was incredible. A super-stiff mauling by Lesnar that rocked Roman Reigns for a good fifteen minutes. Making me believe that the whole thing might wind up a squash match like with Cena at SummerSlam. Then Lesnar got busted open and bled (a lot!). Three Superman Punches and two spears - and Brock kicked out! It was all incredible.

Then Rollins came out - before the match was over! - and put himself in the contest. It became a three-way. A curb stomp to Brock! Rollins went for a second curb stomp - almost got F-5'd, but a Reigns Spear saved him! Then a curb stomp to Reigns for the win! Seth Rollins walks out the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion! Our press area popped huge for this entire match - especially the finish! The champ didn't get pinned, Roman didn't win the title, and Rollins is on top of the world. I love it!

Winner: Seth Rollins!

'Things will not change' after s*x bias verdict without push

Ellen Pao lost her s*x bias suit against prominent Silicon Valley venture capital firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield & Byers on Friday when a San Francisco jury ruled that the firm did not discriminate against her.

Pao, a former junior partner at Kleiner Perkins, sued the firm in 2012, claiming she was passed over for promotions and eventually terminated because she was a woman, and because she had complained about discrimination.

Following the official verdict, Pao took to Twitter to say, "Thank you, world," the first in a series of tweets.

"Because of social media and live reports, the problem of gender discrimination in venture capital has received attention around the globe," read one tweet, followed by: "If we do not share our stories and shine a light on inequities, things will not change."

Others took to the social media platform to echo her sentiment that the battle may have been lost, but hopefully the fight for equity in Silicon Valley is just beginning.

"I hope our industry can keep making progress," tweeted Alexis Ohanian, who is the executive chairman and co-founder of Reddit, the firm where Pao now serves as interim CEO. (He followed with another tweet, welcoming Pao back "full-time" to Reddit after five weeks of trial.)

Chris Sacca, an angel investor who has backed big-name startups including Twitter, Uber and Instagram, tweeted: "Verdict aside, we have a deep gender discrimination problem in tech. Thx to @ekp for reminding us. Let's not let the conversation end here."

On Friday, the hashtag #thankyouellenpao gained momentum, and tweets using the hashtag are continuing to roll in. But what started as praise for Pao's efforts is now flooded with hate tweets.

Interspersed with tweets like "THIS IS ONLY THE BEGINNING #ThankYouEllenPao" are tweets like "#ThankYouEllenPao, you failed in business, court, life, but you have a hashtag now so..."

A tweet from Tracy Chou, a software engineer at Pinterest, illustrated the need for more awareness of gender issues in Silicon Valley.

"White male in tech: I care about women in tech. me: so what do you think about #ellenpao. white male in tech: who?" tweeted Chou, who is based in San Francisco. This was a real conversation she had on Friday.

"I was pretty taken aback," she told CNNMoney.

Prior to the verdict coming down, Sarah Kunst, partner at Fortis Partners, encouraged the conversation around women in tech to continue.

"Hey reporters frantically seeking women in tech + vc for #ellenpao comment? Keep getting comments from us about tech issues post verdict," she tweeted.

Correction: An earlier version of this article said that a judge had found Kleiner Perkins not liable. It was a jury's decision.

Mexico vs. Ecuador: Team News, Predicted Line-Ups, Live Stream and TV Info

Tony Gutierrez/Associated Press

Mexico are set to face Ecuador this weekend in Los Angeles, California. Miguel Herrera has picked basically the same squad that he took to the World Cup, while coach Gustavo Quinteros will play his first match with the South Americans.

The last time these two met, in May 2014, El Tri suffered Luis Montes' loss for the World Cup after he broke his tibia in a clash with Segundo Castillo, who also missed the tournament.

Since this is the only FIFA date before the Copa America and the Gold Cup, it will be El Piojo's sole opportunity to have the European-based players on his team.

What will be the result of this match?

Date: Saturday, March 28

Time: 6:30 p.m. EST /12:30 a.m. GMT (Sunday)

Venue:LA Coliseum, Los Angeles, California.

Television:ESPN 2 and Univision

Streaming:WatchESPN

Form

Mexico

Ecuador

Bolivia: Win

France: Draw

Honduras: Win

Bolivia: Win

Panama: Win

Brazil: Loss

Netherlands: Win

USA: Draw

Belarus: Loss

El Salvador: Win

Predicted Lineups

Mexico will play with their usual 3-5-2. The starting XI will be very similar to what we saw in the 2014 World Cup.

Guillermo Ochoa will guard the goal, despite Jose Corona being back on the team.

The absence of Rafael Marquez (injury) and Francisco Rodriguez (personal reasons) will see Diego Reyes and Hugo Ayala in the lineup.

The full-backs will be Paul Aguilar (right) and Miguel Layun (left); the midfield will also be the same as in Brazil: Hector Herrera (RM), Jose Juan Vazquez (CM) and Andres Guardado (LM).

It's important to mention that Herrera and Layun will miss the next match, against Paraguay, as they'll go back ASAP to Porto and Watford, respectively, per MedioTiempo.com (in Spanish).

The attack will be comprised of Giovani dos Santos and Javier Hernandez.

Meanwhile, Ecuador has received tough news. According to Ecuadorian magazine Estadio (in Spanish), Enner Valencia will miss the upcoming friendlies because he hasn't recovered from a cut on his toe.

Felipe Caicedo and Joao Rojas joined the squad a day later, which led them to miss the first training session, as per the Ecuadorian Football Federation (in Spanish).

This will be the first game for coach Quinteros, who arrives after three years in charge of Ecuadorian club Emelec, having won two Serie A titles in that span.

Key players

Hector Herrera

The Porto midfielder has proved to be the best Mexican footballer right now. He has been instrumental with his club, both in the domestic league and the Champions League.

Herrera scored a superb goal in the second leg of the round of 16 in the 4-0 win over Basel.

With Mexico, he has been a great playmaker, as well as an unbalancing player who can open spaces between the rivals' lines, which is something El Tri lacked in 2013 and most of 2014, when Jose Manuel de la Torre was in charge of the squad.

Fidel Martinez

With the absence of Enner Valencia, coach Quinteros will need all the help he can get.

Currently playing for Mexican club Leones Negros, Fidel Martinez has a strong aerial game, which, combined with his speed and ability to leave the defenders behind, can put Mexico in distress at set pieces.

Martinez has put the ball away five times, becoming his club's top scorer. The Ecuadorian has been instrumental in helping Leones Negros leave the bottom of the relegation table.

Odds (perOddschecker)

Mexico: 23-20

Draw: 12-5

Ecuador: 11-4

The No. 7-seeded Michigan State Spartans (25-11; 12-6) are rolling with wins over No. 10-seeded Georgia, then No. 2-seeded Virginia, but it shouldnt come as too much of a surprise. With the victory over the Cavaliers, Michigan State clinched a Sweet 16 berth for the seventh time in eight years, and a Final Four appearance is looking increasingly more likely with the top seed in the East region already eliminated.

But even for Tom Izzo, the face of a program known for its clutch March Madness performances, the 2015s NCAA tournament is shaping up to be special. The Spartans take on No. 3-seeded Oklahoma on Friday in Syracuse, and won't be looking past the Sooners for a chance to face Villanova, with the No. 1 seeds upset loss to North Carolina State. Odds makers have the Spartans as favorites (7/4) to win the East and advance to the Final Four over Louisville (12/5), Oklahoma (12/5) and NC State (6/1), according to bovada.lv.

There is no Magic Johnson or Mateen Cleaves on this roster, but Izzo has a pair of dynamic guards in senior Travis Trice and junior Denzel Valentine who provide a good shot at writing another chapter in Michigan State lore after already bouncing out Virginia. The 2010 Spartans squad might be a comparable team, since it made a run to the Final Four as a five-seed against a weakened bracket. Featuring current NBA workhorse Draymond Green, the 2010 Spartans beat No. 12 seed New Mexico State, No. 4 Maryland, No. 9 Northern Iowa and No. 6 Tennessee before falling to tournament darling No. 5 Butler in the Final Four.

But if Michigan State were to make the Final Four as a No.7 seed, it would be an accomplishment all its own in the program's history. The Elite Eight is the furthest a Michigan State team advanced in the tournament as six-seed or lower. The 2003 squad over-achieved as a No. 7-seed to advance to the Elite Eight before losing to top-seeded Texas.

This years squad will likely continue to lean on Trice and Valentine to attempt to replicate that success. Trice was the hero against Virginia, dropping 23 points after Valentine got in foul trouble and had to play fewer minutes. Senior forward Branden Dawson chipped in as well, adding 15 points and nine rebounds to help shoulder the load. The trio of Trice, Valentine and Dawson has combined for 87 points (or 66.9 percent) of the Spartans 130 total points in the tournament.

Izzos team is far from a superstar-reliant team, however. As usual, the coach has the rotation playing solid defense (58.5 ppg allowed in the tournament) whilemaking very few mistakes (just 15 turnovers in two games). Its no coincidence that Izzo has led the Spartans to six Final Four appearances and a National Championship. His teams do not beat themselves.

The next step for Michigan State is Fridays game against an Oklahoma team that hasnt truly been tested in its wins over No. 14-seeded Albany and No. 11-seeded Dayton. Johnson, who was the Most Outstanding Player in Michigan State's 1979 championship, told the Spartans their win over Virginia was beautiful to watch. Cleaves, who has served as a broadcaster for CBS during the tournament, referenced on Twitter to "never bet against Tom Izzo."

It likely won't be an easy trip to the Final Four. The Sooners, who have won 12 of their last 15 games after a rough spell in the mid January, promise to be a tough test on Friday. In the past seven weeks, Oklahoma has victories over West Virginia, Iowa State, Texas, and Kansas. Lon Kruger's squad withstood a late charge by Albany and managed to scrape out a victory over Dayton.

Wear Yellow for Seth: From firemen to Ashton Kutcher - all these people joined in

Seth LOVES the colour yellow (Picture: Youtube)

Friday 27th March was a sunshiny day all over the world, and it was nothing to do with the weather.

No, Friday 27th March was a sunshiny day, because the world came out and wore yellow as a way of sending love and support to this little guy, Seth Lane.

Five-year-old Seth loves Fireman Sam and the colour yellow. He also happens to have severe combined immune deficiency (SCID), which means that hes very ill indeed.

Seth is currently confined to a room in Newcastles Great North Childrens Hospital while he awaits a second bone marrow transplant, which is why his mum (who runs this blog called Our Little Hero) thought it would be nice for the world to come to Seth.

And today it did. Check this out

Real life Fireman Sams

This RAF helicopter

Everyone at Sun Life

The fashionistas at Boohoo.com

And of course us lot here at Metro.co.uk

And the campaign stretched over the pond too.

The team at Good Morning America got involved

Stars of the big screen, like this little guy from Despicable Me

And real life A-lister Ashton Kutcher

Support also came in from Japan

This train in Berlin

Even HRH got involved (well sort of)

Good job guys!

And dont forget, its not too late to get involved too. Pop on some yellow, and tweet your picture using the #WearYellowForSeth hashtag.

Plumbing Work That Triggered East Village Explosion Lacked Proper Permits

Department of Buildings records indicate that plumbing work being done in the 2nd Avenue building believed to have been the source of yesterday's East Village explosion did not have the necessary permits, according to the Times.

Authorities believe that the explosion that took down 119-123 Second Avenue yesterday afternoon stemmed from gas work being done at 121 Second Avenue. ConEdison officials told reporters that inspectors had been at the building less than two hours before the explosion and determined that the plumber handling the work had not left enough room for a new meter; they did not let gas flow in through the new pipe.

But ConEd inspectors did not deem it necessary to check the old pipes, and do not know what ultimately led to the explosion; in a statement on their website, they note that they had "no reports of gas odors in the area prior to the fire and explosion," and that no leaks were found during a survey of the gas mains on the block yesterday.

More chillingly, Department of Buildings records show the building did not have any new plumbing or gas work permits, and it's unclear who was working on the pipes at the time. "All we know is that there was no approval from D.O.B. to do any plumbing work in that building after November 2014, said former DOB commissioner Stewart D. OBrien told the Times.

The only current work permit for the building was issued to general contractor Dilber Kukic, and calls for minor renovation and replacement work, including the "replacement, relocation and installation of plumbing fixtures." The Times reports that Kukic had a subcontractor working on the building who has not yet been named; DNAinfo reports that Kukic was actually on the scene during the explosion to check out a gas odor and survived.

Kukic, who told reporters he finished the renovation work six months ago and did not do any work in the basement, is being treated at an area hospital. "As soon as we opened the basement door, there was an explosion, a fire," he told the website. "It was full of smoke. The debris was on top of me."

Notably, Kukic was arrested as part of a sweeping corruption-related indictment earlier this year that named employees from the Department of Building, Department, Housing Preservation and Development, and property managers. He has been accused of bribing an undercover investigator to dismiss building violations on properties he owns uptown; he has plead not guilty to the charges.

BBC not renewing 'Top Gear' presenter Jeremy Clarkson's contract

Story highlights
  • North Yorkshire police ask for BBC report to assess it
  • BBC director general confirms Jeremy Clarkson sacked
  • "Top Gear" presenter was suspended after "fracas" with producer

Clarkson, who hosted one of the most-watched television shows in the world, was suspended on March 10 after what the British broadcaster previously described as a "fracas" with producer Oisin Tymon on March 4.

Wednesday, the BBC released the findings of an internal investigation into the incident.

READ: Clarkson: Hated by liberals, loved by the elite

Ken MacQuarrie, who conducted the investigation, said Tymon had been "subject to an unprovoked physical and verbal attack by Jeremy Clarkson" at a hotel in North Yorkshire after a day of filming. "During the physical attack Oisin Tymon was struck, resulting in swelling and bleeding to his lip," he said.

The physical attack was halted after about 30 seconds by the intervention of a witness, MacQuarrie said, but Clarkson continued to use "derogatory and abusive language" for a sustained period of time. MacQuarrie said Clarkson made a number of attempts to apologize over subsequent days and had reported the incident to BBC management.

Hospital visit

BBC Director General Tony Hall issued a statement announcing Clarkson was being dropped.

"A member of staff -- who is a completely innocent party -- took himself to Accident and Emergency after a physical altercation accompanied by sustained and prolonged verbal abuse of an extreme nature. For me a line has been crossed," he said. "I know how popular the program is and I also know that this decision will divide opinion."

"Top Gear," fronted by Clarkson, James May and Richard Hammond, has made a name for itself globally with risky stunts and a brand of blokish humor that often toes the line and regularly steps over it.

Clarkson is determinedly anti-politically correct on the topics he rails about, both on the show and in his newspaper and magazine columns.

In his statement, Hall referenced the BBC's diversity, saying it was "a broad church."

"We need distinctive and different voices but they cannot come at any price. Common to all at the BBC have to be standards of decency and respect," he said.

North Yorkshire police issued a statement Wednesday saying they had asked for the BBC's report on the incident. "The information will be assessed appropriately and action will be taken by North Yorkshire Police where necessary," they said.

On March 10, the BBC announced that "Top Gear's" March 15 episode had been pulled and this week it canceled four live "Top Gear" shows scheduled for next week in Stavanger, Norway. However, it said the programs would be rescheduled and that all other live dates would "run as scheduled."

Hall said the BBC would "look to renew 'Top Gear' for 2016" and that he had asked BBC controller Kim Shillinglaw to "look at how we put out the last programs in the current series."

Calls to 'Save Clarkson'

After his suspension by the BBC, Clarkson changed his Twitter profile to "I am probably a presenter on the BBC2 motoring show,Top Gear." On Wednesday, the wording became past tense: "I used to be a presenter on the BBC2 motoring show,Top Gear."

Co-host Richard Hammond tweeted: "Gutted at such a sad end to an era. We're all three of us idiots in our different ways but it's been an incredible ride together."

Fans had earlier expressed outrage at the BBC decision to suspend Clarkson.

Even media baron Rupert Murdoch commented on speculation that Clarkson would be sacked, posting a tweet Tuesday night in which he described the presenter as a "funny man with great expertise."

An online petition to have Clarkson reinstated has been signed by more than a million people. Fewer than 10,000 people signed a counterpetition calling for him to be fired.

Last week, a fan dressed as the "Stig" -- the anonymous racing car test-driver who was once a regular feature of the show -- drove to the BBC's London headquarters in an armored tank to present the "Bring Back Clarkson" petition.

Clarkson later thanked his supporters in a tweet shared more than 22,000 times.

According to the BBC website, Clarkson is credited with changing the face of modern motoring journalism. It also adds: "Terrifyingly, he might just be the most influential man in motoring."

Clarkson has been at the helm of the program since 1998, and for more than a decade has fronted the relaunched version with Hammond and May. The trio's long-distance challenges in a mix of elite and sometimes barely roadworthy vehicles has earned the program cult status.

In 2013, Guinness World Records named "Top Gear" the world's most widely watched factual program, with an estimated 350 million global viewers. The show is sold to 214 territories worldwide. Local versions have been made in the United States, China, Russia, Australia and South Korea.

Offensive comments

While Clarkson's abrasive style has proven popular with viewers, his on- and off-air comments have earned him a reputation as a politically incorrect maverick who often walks a fine line between humor and offense.

Last year, he apologized profusely after being accused of mumbling the n-word in a clip that wasn't aired.

"I'd actually used the word I was trying to obscure. I was mortified by this, horrified. It is a word I loathe," Clarkson said in video statement posted online.

He's been accused on other occasions of racism, including characterizing Mexicans as "lazy and feckless" and using the word "slope" over footage of an Asian man crossing a bridge during a "Top Gear" special in Myanmar. Producer Andy Wilman later apologized, calling it a "light-hearted word play joke," and saying that the team was not aware that it was offensive to Asians.

Last week, Clarkson launched into an expletive-filled rant at a charity auction in north London, verbally attacking his BBC bosses. A CNN reporter who was at the event said Clarkson swore often as he talked about his suspension from the show, saying the BBC had "f**ked themselves" and had ruined a great show.

Clarkson later brushed off the incident, saying the rant was meant "in jest" and was designed to increase bids for the prize being auctioned -- one last lap of the "Top Gear" race track.

Angelina Jolie's 'bio-identical' therapy spurs hormone questions

Angelina Jolie

Susan Donaldson James TODAY contributor

Angelina Jolie, thrust into early menopause followingpreventive cancer surgery, said she's using bio-identical hormones a choice that's raised new questions about the safest therapies for easing menopause symptoms.

Getty Images file

Angelina Jolie recently underwent a second cancer-prevention surgery.

Jolie, 39, said in aNew York Times op-ed piece Tuesday that she had consulted both Eastern and Western doctors, looking for natural ways to deal with her cancer risk.

It's unclear what specific types of hormones Jolie might be taking, but without hormone replacement therapy, she'd cope with the typical symptoms of menopause: hot flashes, vaginal dryness, insomnia and mood swings. Because shes experiencing menopause much earlier than the average age of 51, she also would be at risk for early osteoporosis and cardiovascular problems.

Bio-identical means a lab-made hormone meant to be molecularly similar to the estrogen and progesterone produced in women's bodies. There are dozens of hormone products on the market, and hormone replacement therapy available today is very different from formulations sold in the 1990s and earlier.

The Food and Drug Administration approves some plant-based hormones, but cautions about using those made by unregulated compounding pharmacies that cater to women who are uneasy about taking hormones.

In fact, bio-identical is not a scientific term, said Dr. Lauren Streicher, assistant clinical professor of obstetrics and gynecology at Northwestern Universitys medical school and co-author of The Essential Guide to Hysterectomy. It is a term originally made up by savvy market research gurus to describe hormones distributed by compounding pharmacies.

The Food and Drug Administration warnsthat some claims made by the sellers of compounded, bio-identical hormones namely, that they're safer than dangerous prescription drugs are unproven and that they mislead women and health care professionals.

Jolie carries a mutated version of the BRCA1 gene that increases her risk for breast and ovarian cancer. In 2012, she had a double mastectomy. Last week, she underwent a laparoscopic bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy to remove her ovaries and fallopian tubes.

It is not possible to remove all risk, and the fact is I remain prone to cancer, she wrote. I feel feminine, and grounded in the choices I am making for myself and my family. I know my children will never have to say, Mom died of ovarian cancer.

Doctors approve of Angelina Jolie's ovarian surgery

Jolie, the mother of six, will be unable to conceive more children but women with an intact uterus, as she has, can bear children via in vitro fertilization (IVF)

To curb the symptoms of menopause, Jolie says she wears a clear patch that delivers bio-identical estrogen. She also has a progesterone IUD to help prevent uterine cancer.

We do not know whether Ms. Jolie is on an FDA-approved product, or an compounded one, said Pauline M. Maki, president of the North American Menopause Society. Given that she is using a patch, it is likely an FDA-approved form.

In fact, when it comes to the type of patch Jolie revealed she's wearing, compounding pharmacies cannot legally manufacture or sell them, said Dr. Shira Miller, a Los Angeles holistic menopause and anti-aging physician.

The FDA approves a plant-based hormone therapy in patch form (17-beta estradiol); compounding pharmacies can only sell drugs that are not available commercially, she said.

Hormone replacement therapy comes in a variety of forms, including conjugated equine estrogens like Premarin (pregnant mares urine), synthetics and those made from plants like soy and yams. Its delivery can be a pill, cream or patch.

FDA-approved hormones are sold by prescription only and generally covered by insurance; compounded hormones do not require a prescription.

[Bio-identicals] are not any better or safer than hormones that are FDA-approved, said Dr. Rebecca Starck, chairman of regional obstetrics and gynecology at the Cleveland Clinic. Truthfully, its a marketing tool that gives women the impression they are safer or healthier.

I would argue safety from the FDA products [is] more robust, and they monitor adverse outcomes, Starck added. I would be concerned about how these compounds are made and would want to assure women are getting the appropriate dosage.

Compounding pharmacies came under scrutiny in 2012 when 64 people in 20 states died from meningitis after drugs used for spinal steroid injections were contaminated with a fungus at a Massachusetts facility.

According to Bernie Noe, a naturopath physician from Montpelier, Vermont, women who take bio-identicals are routinely tested for blood levels of those hormones.

While some of his patients take these unregulated hormones, we cannot conclusively say they are safer, Noe said.

He often recommends natural remedies for menopause symptoms, including Siberian rhubarb. Hormones [of any type] are always my last choice.

As the debate rages, other medical experts call the push behind bio-identical hormones an example of brilliant" marketing.

[The word] was catchy, it sounded natural, and it also sounded like something different than the duplicate FDA-approved plant-derived hormone products produced and distributed by commercial pharmacies, said Streicher.

And it worked. A $1 billion industry was launched and supported by women who distrusted the pharmaceutical industry and were desperate to feel better.

David Hasslehoff Performs a Killer '80s Medley on American Idol

@PatrickGomezLA

03/25/2015 AT 10:15 PM EDT

It was '80s night on American Idol and even though there are some very talented singers left in the competition, the performance of the night didn't belong to one of the contestants.

Making a surprise appearance on the show Wednesday, David Hasselhoff took to the stage to sing a medley of '80s hits and it was everything a "Hoff" fan could hope for.

Starting with "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" by Queen, the former Baywatch star made his way through "Walking on Sunshine" by Katrina and the Waves, "Never Gonna Give You Up" by Rick Astley, "Do You Really Wanna Hurt Me" by Culture Club and "Let's Dance" by David Bowie before closing out the medley with "I Love Rock 'n' Roll" by Joan Jett & The Blackhearts.

"I wanted to put a little humor in it and a little fun," Hasselhoff told PEOPLE. "Sometimes people just get up there and sing and they've got a great voice but who cares, you've got to entertain people. I wanted to do a little of the Freddie Mercury. I like to put humor and fun into everything that I do and also passion. I just put that together yesterday with [Idol's music director Ricky Minor]. It was hard to choose just six songs. I wanted to do, like, 30."

Oh, and did we mention that all this happens in less than two minutes?!

American Idol airs Wednesdays (8 p.m. ET) on Fox.

Barcelona vs Real Madrid 2015: Luis Suarez goal marks turnaround

BARCELONA --

Luis Suarez is scoring again, and Barcelona is getting back to its best.

The Uruguay striker, who sat out the start of the season while suspended for biting an opponent at the World Cup, has rediscovered his devastating touch in front of goal, and it's translating into wins.

On Sunday, Suarez scored a superb game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over Real Madrid. The win put Barcelona four points clear at the top of the Spanish league.

It also signaled a turnaround for both Suarez and his club.

Suarez ran onto a pass from Dani Alves and slotted a difficult-angled shot past goalkeeper Iker Casillas. It was a goal that combined speed, power and a pure scorer's touch.

"I tried to take advantage of the space between the defenders and to be as fast as I could so their center backs didn't have time to react," Suarez said. "Fortunately, it worked."

It was Suarez's 14th goal for the club, and the one he called his "most important" so far. It also put Barcelona in position to win back the title it surrendered to Atletico Madrid last year.

Barcelona took a risk when it signed Suarez from Liverpool for 81 million euros (then $108 million), bringing him in to team up with Messi and Neymar in attack. The Uruguayan had to miss the beginning of the season after getting slapped with a four-month suspension for biting Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini at the World Cup.

Although Suarez struggled to score in his first three months with Barcelona, he has found his form just as the season enters its critical phase.

"That's why we signed him," Barcelona coach Luis Enrique said. "We are happy he can be a decisive player. Since his arrival he has brought positive things to the team. We are talking about a striker who is able to combine well with his teammates, a scorer with an imposing physique and an interesting character."

At the start of January, Luis Enrique's job security was being questioned after a 1-0 loss at Real Sociedad was followed by a chaotic week that included the firing of the team's sports director and the club calling for early elections after this season.

Barcelona has won 18 of 19 games since, and now has back-to-back wins over English champion Manchester City and European champion Madrid.

"There is a long way still to go, and we know the league title will be tough to win," said Suarez, who scored a Premier League-leading 31 goals for Liverpool last season. "We have to make good on this advantage. Like any league, you don't know what can happen if you relax even a little."

Barcelona has also reached the Copa del Rey final against Athletic Bilbao and will face Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League quarterfinals.

One of the keys to Barcelona's success is Luis Enrique making the team more versatile in attack. Unable to generate goals through its trademark passing attack, Barcelona did its damage through a set piece and a long ball over the top for Suarez.

Suarez's goal on Sunday restored Barcelona's lead after Cristiano Ronaldo had equalized for Madrid. Jeremy Mathieu had scored a header from a free kick by Messi to put Barcelona ahead 1-0.

"We always have the goal of maintaining possession to create chances and to defend by keeping the ball away from our area," Luis Enrique said. "But this game was complicated, and you need to know how to adapt."

Getting the ball to Suarez is one way that sure seems to be working.

Preview: Barcelona vs. Real Madrid

Sports Mole previews Sunday's EL Clasico at the Camp Nou between Barcelona and Real Madrid.

By Darren Plant, ReporterFiled: Saturday, March 21, 2015 at 16:24 UK

Last Updated: Sunday, March 22, 2015 at 20:07 UK

Barcelona boss Luis Enrique will be hoping that striker Lionel Messi can continue his masterful form when his side host Real Madrid in El Clasico on Sunday night.

Messi earned widespread plaudits for his performance against Manchester City in midweek as he helped the Catalan giants progress through to the quarter-finals of the Champions League.

That victory continued the club's recent fine form in all competitions, with nine wins being recorded from their last 10 La Liga fixtures to move a point clear of Real in the standings

Enrique will be without midfielder Sergio Busquets, who is still nursing an ankle injury, but Claudio Bravo will return in place of Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

Real head into the contest having enjoyed a seven-day break after their 2-0 win over Levante, the first in the league in three matches.

That result was vital ahead of their trip to the Camp Nou, but coach Carlo Ancelotti will be aware of the importance of this fixture, with defeat resulting in a four-point deficit and perhaps moving him closer to the exit door in the summer.

Winger Gareth Bale netted twice last weekend to silence his doubters for the time being, but the Welsh international needs a big performance against the club's arch rivals.

Midfielder Toni Kroos could be recalled to the starting lineup in place of Lucas Silva, but Raphael Varane is likely to have to make do with a place on the substitutes' bench.

Lee Kuan Yew: Why Singapore's Extraordinary Leader Will Be Missed

LEE KUAN YEW was one of the great statesmen of the post-WWII era. He made Singapore an economic powerhouse, demonstrating that so-called natural resources arent necessary for prosperity, that the key is creating an environment in which human ingenuity can thrive. He didnt tolerate corruption; to eliminate the temptation and attract capable people, Lee paid government officials high salaries. He kept a tight grip on spending and pushed down taxes; the top rate on personal incomes is all of 20%. He knew the folly of weak money; the Singapore dollar looks like the Rock of Gibraltar compared with most currenciesincluding the U.S. dollar, most of the time.

Lee simultaneously demonstrated that sound finance can coexist with soundly thought out social programs. He pursued a vigorous housing program that enabled people who didnt earn high incomes to buy their homes; his was a model for how subsidies need not lead to the housing-related disasters that have plagued the U.S. Singapores health care system has provided comprehensive coverage to its people without the rationing, high costs and dicey care that characterize so many others. Singapores pension system avoided the pay-as-you-go trap that is hurtling those in other countries toward insolvency.

(Credit: Munshi Ahmed/Bloomberg)

Under Lees guidance Singapore developed a real-life playbook for how an impoverished country can flourish. When Lee became prime minister in 1959, Singapores per capita income was little more than $400. Today it is over $56,000, higher than that of all but a handful of other countries.

Critics will tell you that Lee was no Jeffersonian democrat, and he wasnt. But he allowed elections, even if he didnt give the opposition a lot of breathing room (though if he had, he would have won handily). More important, under his leadership Singapore developed a thriving middle class, along with the civic institutions and habits that are crucial to a sustainable democracy. Too many times weve seen that merely holding an election does not a lasting democracy make. Singapores political system is evolving in a way that bodes well for long-term stability.

Early in his political career Lee shed his socialist sympathies and became a hardheaded pragmatist. He ruthlessly suppressed communist attempts to hijack his political party, even though he had made common cause with them in the fight for independence, when Singapore was a British colony.

In the 1950s and 1960s Lee demonstrated superb political skill in maintaining Singapores independence in the face of real hostility from two immensely larger neighbors, Indonesia and Malaysia.

But Lees influence extended far beyond his small country. One wishes he could have been the leader of a country like Indonesia or China. (He would have conducted U.S. foreign policy better than almost all of our Secretaries of State.) He supported U.S. efforts in trying to save South Vietnam from communist takeover by the North. Although the U.S. lost that war, Lee argued that our long effort gave the rest of Asia the time needed to develop the strength to resist communist takeovers. He strongly supported a robust U.S. role in the region as a counter to the old Soviet Union and China.

I got to meet Lee, thanks to our chairman, Cap Weinberger. When Cap was Secretary of Defense, he worked closely with Lee and considered him a stalwart ally, whose insight and advice were extremely valuable and who provided enormous practical help during the Cold War.

Lee helped us launch our first Forbes Global CEO Conferencein 2001. On the right is Forbes chairman and former Defense Secretary Cap Weinberger. (Credit: Glen Davis)

To listen to Lee talk about the world situation was an enlightening delight. During one of our most memorable visits he recounted the story of his meeting with Deng Xiaoping soon after Deng had won the reins of power and was mulling how to go about rebuilding China in the aftermath of Maos horrific Cultural Revolution. Dengs trip to Singapore in 1978 was his first and only trip there. He was stunned by what he saw in Singapore: a booming area populated by Chinese that was independent and politically stable. How did you do it? Deng asked Lee. Deng threw aside his itinerary and spent hour after hour in intense conversation with Lee.

When Deng returned to China, he began putting Lees precepts to work, creating special Singapore-like economic development zones along Chinas coast. Thus was Chinas historic and rapid modernization set in motion.

One of our journalistic coups occurred in 2001, when Lee Kuan Yew kindly accepted our offer to become a FORBES columnist, agreeing to share his insights with our audience every three months. Its so unfortunate that the civilized world has lost such a wise voice at this troubled time.

Rob Kardashian -- Compares Kim to Psychotic Murderer

Compares Kim to Psychotic Murderer

3/22/2015 10:48 AM PDT BY TMZ STAFF

1:30PM PST:Rob has now followed the family back on Instagram, including Kim.

Rob Kardashian clearly hates his sister Kim, comparing her to Amy Dunne, the sociopath from "Gone Girl" who killed her ex-boyfriend.

Rob just posted this pic on his Instagram, and it's really shocking. He's been MIA for months, but he's now re-surfacing in a big way.

Rob also just un-followed his entire family from Instagram.

You'll recall Rob bailed on Kim's wedding in Italy just before the photo shoot, and it seemed at the time there was bad blood, but that blood is clearly boiling now.

It's possible he's joking, but it's highly unlikely ... this is super aggressive.

Can underachieving Gonzaga avoid its usual NCAA tournament letdown?

Gonzaga has made the last 17 NCAA tournaments, which is tied for the sixth-longest streak in history and, amazingly, islonger than any streakJohn Wooden put togetherat UCLA. But heres the rub: Despite being a top-four seed six times during that stretch, the Zags have made exactly one regional final, back in 1999, the first year of their run.

Since then, its been March disappointment over March disappointment. The teams of Mark Few have somehow never advanced past the Sweet 16. Since 2002, the team is 12-13 in the tournament with just two second-weekend appearances againstfive losses to lower-seeded teams. In the fouryears Gonzaga has had a top-three seed, they have a pedestrian 5-4 record. In short, Gonzaga is the definition of an NCAA tournament bust.

(Getty Images)

Thats why Sundays performance against Iowa was so impressive. It was clear, decisive and dominant. A No. 2 seed making the Sweet 16 ordinarily wouldnt be cause for cheer, but it is for the Zags, who havent been this far since 2009. Gonzaga was actually on a five-year streak of second-round exits. Getting over the mental hump, however much it affected the team or not, is a major step in the right direction.

Getting UCLA in the Sweet 16 wont hurt either. The Bruins have played good basketball in two wins over SMU and UAB, but entered the tournament with a 20-13 record,a 3-8 record over teams in the NCAA field and their best win over a team ranked No. 20 in the RPI. The old Gonzaga might be expected to lose thisgame, which will be played sometime Friday night. But with just a little momentum, even if it only cameagainst North Dakota St. and Iowa, the Zags feel like heavy favorites to advance to their first Elite Eight since the start of this epic tournament streak.

(Getty Images)

Does Gonzaga have the firepower to make the Final Four? The team has two losses on the year, one of which came in overtime to Arizona, a team many consider the non-Kentucky favorite to win it all. They certainly have the good to do it. The winner of Duke or Utah would await in the Elite Eight, so Gonzaga willhave to trulyearn its first Final Four berth. But maybe, just maybe, this is the year for Mark Fews team. Thats been the hopein almost every year since 1999. This time, it might actually come true.

Lil B Blames Kevin Durant's Injury On His Curse

Lil B also says that he'll lift the curse if Durant plays him in a game of one-on-one.

Fresh off news that Kevin Durant will likely be forced to sit out the rest of the NBA season due to a nagging foot injury, rapper Lil B has taken credit for the misfortune.

Nearly four years into their public beef, Lil B says Durant is still the victim of a curse that he himself directed on the ball player several years ago. Durant's team, the Oklahoma City Thunder, are also struggling as a whole, trying to maintain their eighth-place standing in the Western Conference.

Speaking with TMZ in a recent interview, Lil B took credit for the latest development in Durant's injury, promising that the curse will continue to affect him unless it's lifted.

"He's still under it," the rapper said. "Everyone who disses Lil B pays for it."

As for what Durant can do to get back on Lil B's good side, The BasedGod says it's all up to a simple game of one-on-one.

"All he has to do is meet on the basketball court for a friendly game of 21," Lil B said. "I'm passionate about my game, my defense, if he doesn't beat me 21-0 he should be embarrassed. He knows the curse is affecting him. Everyone knows. He needs to see me on the court."

Last year Lil B released a music video for a song called "f**k KD" and more recently addressed the rift during a lecture at MIT. When asked by a student about the beef during his lecture at MIT last November, Lil B explained.

"Thank you so much for bringing that out there," he said when asked about Durant according to Fader. "I do. I want to say, to answer your question: yes, I do love Kevin Durant, and I appreciate him, and I appreciate the NBA."

Ashley Judd brings dog to Kentucky game, naturally some people angered

Updated MAR 20, 2015 2:29p ET

University of Kentucky fan Ashley Judd brought her dog Shug with her to the Wildcats' NCAA tournament opener against No. 16 Hampton Thursday night, triggering some predictable yet perplexing backlash against her. (Warning: This post contains explicit language further down.)

Here's Judd at the game with Shug, a cocker spaniel-poodle mix that Judd has registered as a psychological support dog, who's being held by a woman sitting beside the actress:

Haters are always going to hate, and here they go ridiculing Judd:

This is pretty much par for the course when it comes to the actress. In fact Judd wrote an piece on Thursday about the online abuse she suffered over her comment about the SEC championship game on Sunday. Judd tweeted that Kentucky's opponent Arkansas was "playing dirty & can kiss my team's free throw making a--."

No, not the most savory comment, but the vitriol spewed at her in response was outrageous. She wrote:

I read in vivid language the various ways, humiliating and violent, in which my genitals, vaginal and a**l, should be violated, shamed, exploited and dominated. Either the writer was going to do these things to me, or they were what I deserved. My intellect was insulted: I was called stupid, an idiot. My age, appearance and body were attacked. Even my family was thrown into the mix: Someone wrote that my "grandmother is creepy."

On Monday, the day after the tornado of cyberbulling, she said:

Everyone needs to take personal responsibility for what they write and not allowing this misinterpretation and shaming culture on social media to persist. And by the way, I'm pressing charges.

Good for her. You want to demean and ridicule people from the comfort of your laptop and mighty throne? Then be prepared for the consequences, which may include getting fired from your job or suspended from school, as happened to Curt Schilling's online harrassers.

As for Judd's dog, why does anyone really care? The dog appears to be chilling out, not getting in anyone's way. Some of the haters (in less vitriolic fashion than on Sunday) are actually ridiculing the concept of an emotional therapy dog in the first place.

It's a real thing. The Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988 (the FHA), which pertains to housing, recognizes an emotional support animal as "a companion animal that provides therapeutic benefit to an individual with a mental or psychiatric disability."

It's common for persons suffering from depression, veterans coping with post-traumatic stress disorder, elderly and others to have an emotional therapy dog.

The Buzzer reached out to the KFC Yum! Center about the arena's policy regarding dogs. We have not yet received comment.

But why does anyone care about her dog in the first place? Does it impair anyone's enjoyment of the game? Offend personal sensibilities?

No, people still view social media as a platform to bully. I'm not advocating censorship, but when free speech turns into hate speech or bullying as it did on Sunday, no longer should the offenders be allowed to remain anonymous and unaccountable.

Sia, No Doubt to play May 16 benefit for LA's LGBT Center

Sia and No Doubt will be joined by comedian Sarah Silverman on May 16 at the Hollywood Palladium as the headliners for the 2015 An Evening With Women gala benefiting the Los Angeles LGBT Center.

Australian singer-songwriter Sia and Southern California band No Doubt are each slated to play acoustic sets, and Silverman will perform her stand-up comedy for the event, which raises funds to provide services to underserved seniors, women and girls.

This is going to be a really cool show for us, members of No Doubt said in a joint statement, different than the big plugged-in shows weve done over the years. Itll be exciting to switch it up and play a select handful of songs and bring a scaled down, acoustic vibe to them. We applaud the tremendous work Los AngelesLGBT Center has done over the years in striving to create a community where all people are equal and treated with fairness and dignity.

Other participants and honorees will be announced in coming weeks, organizers say. Updates and additional information on the event is available at its official website.

An Evening With Women, begun in 2002, was reconfigured in 2009 by songwriter-recording artist Linda Perry, who once again will co-chair the program.

"Our goal is to raise $1 million dollars this year, which would mark the highest single event fundraiser in the centers history, producer and co-chair Brent Bolthouse told Pop & Hiss.

Previous performers have included Perry, Silverman, Christina Aguilera, Cyndi Lauper, Heart, Pink, Joan Jett, Ozzy Osbourne, Courtney Love, Kathy Griffin, Margaret Cho, 4Non Blondes and Milla Jovovich.

The annual beneift has raised more than $4.65 million for the center since 2002. The L.A. LGBT Center has assited members of the regions lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community since it opened in 1969.
