Whitefish resident Doug Betters was honored at a special ceremony on Monday as one of the 50 greatest players to wear a Miami Dolphins uniform.
Betters spoke with reporter Dax VanFossen on Tuesday about the honor and what it means to be part of such a special group.
To be named as one of the best players to ever wear a Miami Dolphins uniform, is quite an honor. It places you alongside Dan Marino, Larry Czonka, Don Schula and so many other greats of the game - and that"s exactly the list that Doug Betters of Whitefish found himself on.
"The Dolphins organization is great about their alumni program, you know they really take care of us and I was fortunate enough to be voted on by the fans and the team," Betters said.
Betters says that he and his wife Jennifer reallyreceived the royal treatment in Miami, being escorted to the stadium on Monday by police.
"I"ll tell you it was pretty cool to have a cop on your tail with flashing lights and you just keep driving. I mean you drive faster."
Betters told us by phone from South Florida on Tuesday that it was an incredible honor, but one that he shares with former teammates, coaches and really his friends.
"Especially when you consider all of the hall of famers and the likes of Marino, Griese and you know Schula and the offense. You know hanging out with those guys and I played with Gants and I got to know Mr. Czonka and Griese from my first year and played with them."
Former Dolphins great Dan Marino echoed Betters" sentiments about the camaraderie.
"There"s no doubt, you spend so many hours with these guys while you"re working and crafting your profession and doing the thing that you love to do, and you go through so many things and it"s great to see these guys, you don"t see them all the time, so it"s great to be around them."
Betters told MTN News that it always feels like a homecoming to return to Miami, but Whitefish is certainly home - at least for eightmonths out of the year.
