Redskins snap counts vs. Cowboys: Alfred Morris absent for final three quarters

The Redskins lost to the Dallas Cowboys, 19-16, on Monday night at FedEx Field. Heres how the 65 offensive and 56 defensive snaps were divided up:

QuarterbackKirk Cousins 65 snaps (played 100 percent on offense)Colt McCoy DNP

Outside of a 28-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver DeSean Jackson, there were a lot of points left on the board by Cousins and the Redskins offense. He was ineffective in the first half and most of the scoring opportunities created in the second half led to field goals. Cousins once again wasnt able to take advantage of three takeaways from the defense, completing 22 of his 31 passes for 219 yards witha 101.4 quarterback rating.

Running backMatt Jones 40; 62% (one snap on special teams)Chris Thompson 17; 26% (six snaps on special teams)Alfred Morris eight; 12%Darrel Young DNP (21 snaps on special teams)

As predictable as this offense has been this season, it is mindboggling how the Redskins are using their running backs. You never know whether Morris will be the lead dog in the backfield, to quote Redskins Coach Jay Gruden, or if the team will completely eliminate him from the game like on Monday. Morris had six carries, all in the first quarter, for 12 yards then disappeared from the game for the final three quarters. The Redskins stuck with Jones, who had 18 carries for 48 yards, throughout the game. He had some decent runs, but it wasnt enough to justify eliminating Morris from the game. The Redskins had 73 rushing yards on 26 carries.

Wide receiverPierre Garcon 58; 89% (one snap on special teams)Jamison Crowder 54; 83% (three snaps on special teams)DeSean Jackson 48; 74% (three snaps on special teams)Ryan Grant 8; 12% (12 snaps on special teams)Rashad Ross 2; 3% (eight snaps on special teams)

Jackson made up for his awful punt return fumble by scoring the teams only touchdown to tie the game at 16 with 30 seconds left. He finished with a team-high six catches for 80 yards. Jackson was visibly upset at certain points ofthe game with the lack of targets he received (and so was Cowboys wide receiver Dez Bryant, for that matter), but hefinished tied with a team-high seven targets.

Tight endJordan Reed 62; 95%JeRon Hamm 3; 5% (20 snaps on special teams)

The absence of tight end Derek Carrier, who was inactive because of an Achilles tendon sprain, clearly impacted the Redskins personnel packages. They couldnt run as many two-tight-end sets as they wanted, relying on tackles Tom Compton and Ty Nsekhe to serve as extra blockers along the line of scrimmage. Reed finished the game with three catches for 33 yards, while Hamm was hardly used in his first NFL game.

Offensive lineTrent Williams 65; 100% (five snaps on special teams)Spencer Long 65; 100% (five snaps on special teams)Brandon Scherff 65; 100% (five snaps on special teams)Morgan Moses 65; 100% (five snaps on special teams)Josh LeRibeus 65; 100%Tom Compton 17; 26% (six snaps on special teams)Ty Nsekhe 4; 6% (five snaps on special teams)Brian de la Puente DNP

The offensive line got off to a rough start, allowing three sacks in the first quarter, but the pass protection improved from that point. Cousins was hit six times in the game, and the Redskins offense couldnt establish anything on the ground with Jones or Morris in the backfield.

It was overall a terrible performance from the offense and a game this team shouldve won had the Redskins received more productivity from this side of the ball.

Defensive lineChris Baker 43; 77%Ricky Jean Francois 34; 61% (six snaps on special teams)Jason Hatcher 20; 36% (one snap on special teams)Terrance Knighton 17; 30% (eight snaps on special teams)Kedric Golston 12; 21% (15 snaps on special teams)Stephen Paea 10; 18%

The Redskins defensive line didnt record a sack or quarterback hit in the game. This scheme relies on the defensive line to bring pressure without needing tosending extra defenders in blitz packages, yet it hasnt been able to accomplish that on a consistent basis. Paea injured his toe in the third quarter and couldnt return to the game. h**l have an MRI exam on the right toe.

Inside linebackerWill Compton 56; 100% (12 snaps on special teams)Mason Foster 46; 82% (seven snaps on special teams)Carlos Fields DNP (14 snaps on special teams)Keenan Robinson DNP

Compton and Foster played very well in the game, leading the team with seven tackles each. Foster recorded a forced fumble and recovered another fumble as part of the teams three turnovers. He filled in for Perry Riley Jr., who injured his foot during practice and will be out three to six weeks, and ended the game as one of the few brights spots in an ugly contest. Robinson, who has missed the past three games because of injury, was active but did not play.

Outside linebackerRyan Kerrigan 56; 100% (five snaps on special teams)Trent Murphy 28; 50% (21 snaps on special teams)Preston Smith 28; 50% (four snaps on special teams)Houston Bates one (20 snaps on special teams)

The Redskins only sack in the game came from Murphy in the second quarter. Otherwise, the defense couldnt get to Cowboys quarterback Matt Cassel throughout the game. Bates had a nice tackle for loss near the goal line to hold the Cowboys to a field goal, but it was otherwise a quiet outing from the outside linebackers.

CornerbackBashaud Breeland 56; 100% (nine snaps on special teams)Will Blackmon 55; 98% (10 snaps on special teams)Quinton Dunbar 31; 55% (eight snaps on special teams)Kyshoen Jarrett 28; 50% (10 snaps on special teams)Dashaun Phillips DNP (19 snaps on special teams)

The Redskins had a similar game plan at cornerback asthey did last week against the New York Giants. They used Dunbar as the outside cornerback in the slot and shifted Blackmon inside as the nickel cornerback. Jarrett was thrown into the mix at safety and cornerback in the teams dime package. Cassel went 16 of 29 for 222 yards and an 80 quarterback rating.

SafetyDashon Goldson 56; 100% (nine snaps on special teams)DeAngelo Hall 39; 70%Jeron Johnson DNP (18 snaps on special teams)

The Redskins started Hall once again at safety alongsideGoldson. The longtime cornerback fared better as a tackler than he did last week against the Giants, finishing with four tackles, but there was still room for improvement. Goldson was third on the team with six tackles and produced one of the three turnovers in the game by stripping running back Darren McFadden on the Cowboys first possession.
