Continue to count your blessings regardless, I know I will, because I got shot but ironically I dodge[d] a bullet, Early added. It could of been way worse and Im thankful and grateful it wasnt.

Yahoos ShamsCharaniareportsan MRI revealed no structural damage, as the bullet went straight through, and that Early will not need surgery on his knee.According toCharania, Earlys expected timetable for recovery is six to 12 weeks.

Early was drafted by the Knicks in 2014, and has played in 10 games in his second season with the team, averaging 0.7 points and 3.4 minutes per game. He played in 39 games last season after missing two months to recover from arthroscopic surgery in his right knee.

Knicks player Cleanthony Early shot in leg outside club

NEW YORK --

New York Knicks player Cleanthony Early was shot in the leg as he left a strip club Wednesday by masked robbers who demanded his "gold," law enforcement officials said.

Early left CityScapes in Queens with his girlfriend at about 4:30 a.m. in an Uber cab when his vehicle was surrounded by at least two other cars and as many as six men got out, the two officials said. Early handed over two gold chains before he was shot in the right kneecap, the officials said. The men drove off. The Uber driver and girlfriend were uninjured, and the driver was robbed only of his identification. Early, 24, was hospitalized in stable condition.

The two law enforcement officials spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to release the victim"s name.

The team said in a brief statement that it was aware of an incident involving Early and "relieved that he is not in a life-threatening situation."

Police were searching for suspects and trying to determine if it was a carefully planned attack or a spur-of-the-moment hit.

The theft comes about 10 days after Knicks forward Derrick Williams was robbed of $617,000 in jewelry from his home. He had taken home two women from a Manhattan club. Police are still looking for suspects.

Williams has declined to comment on the theft, but the case raised questions about whether NBA players should have a curfew like other professional sports. In April, Indiana Pacers forward Chris Copeland, his girlfriend and another woman were stabbed following a late-night argument on the street near a Manhattan nightclub.

Knicks coach Derek Fisher was asked about the policy at a news conference after Williams was robbed.

"I don"t really have to get into our policies of what you can and can"t do," he told reporters last week. "We don"t have a curfew like in the NFL or other sports do on certain nights. It"s an unfortunate incident."

The 6-foot-8 Early was selected by New York in the second round of the 2014 NBA Draft following his senior season at Wichita State. The Bronx native has seen action in 10 of the Knicks" 33 games this season and is averaging 0.7 points per game. He played for less than a minute during the Knicks" 108-96 win over Detroit on Tuesday night at Madison Square Garden.

Early missed two months of the 2014-15 season after undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his right knee, the same one injured in Wednesday"s shooting.

In a 2014 story in the Daily News of New York on Early during his amateur days that brought him to a prep school, community college and Wichita, where he won 30 or more games each year, he said he was "born on the bottom."

"I wasn"t bad, just mischievous, lacked guidance. I had to overcome those adversities, understand the world is a certain type of way," he said. "I"m not gonna cry about it or dwell. I have an opportunity to improve by rational decisions."

Denver weather: Cool and windy with a slight chance of snow

(Denver Post file photo)

Cooling temperatures, gusty winds and a slight chance of rain or snow are making their way to Denver on Saturday, forecasters said.

With a high of 44 degrees and a 10 percent chance of precipitation, forecasters with the National Weather Service in Boulder are expecting a chilly start to the weekend.

A weather disturbance moving across Colorado on Saturday is likely to produce around one to two inches of snow in the mountains with isolated rain or snow showers possible along the Front Range.

Wind gusts could reach 17 mph and are expected to usher in cooler air.

By nightfall, the weather is supposed to clear up as high pressure and dry air make their way over the state from the West.

On Sunday, temperatures are expected to warm up to a high of 52 degrees with mostly sunny skies.

Temperatures are shaping up to be above normal through Thursday, the weather service said.

Manchester United must sign an experienced striker in January, insists Steven ...

Steven Gerrard believes Manchester United must sign an experienced striker in January.

The Red Devils drew a blank for the seventh time this season in the Premier League as they failed to beat Chelsea at Old Trafford.

Despite the much-improved display, it was a familiar tale for United as the pressure on Louis van Gaal continues.

And whether the Dutchman is in charge or not, Gerrard knows where they must improve in the transfer window.

"Manchester United still need something for me," he told BT Sport.

"I think they need an extra striker because there"s still too much pressure on Wayne Rooney.

"Martial is very young, Depay is very young, I think they need an extra striker to come and help Wayne Rooney with the goal burden."

United sold Robin van Persie and Javier Hernandez in the summer, while James Wilson has since been allowed to join Brighton on loan.

After the draw with Chelsea, Van Gaal insisted there was no reason for him to quit as United boss.

Pittsburgh Steelers IR Roosevelt Nix

PITTSBURGH -- The Pittsburgh Steelers placed fullback and special teams player Roosevelt Nix on the injured/reserve list, the team announced Monday.

Nix suffered a metatarsal injury in his right foot in the third quarter of Pittsburgh"s 20-17 loss to the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday. The fullback called the injury a "freak accident" on Monday and said it happened when he was trying to cut.

He was ruled out for the game shortly after suffering the injury.

Nix was signed to a reserve/future contract on Jan. 9. He was a defensive end at Kent State and came into the league as an undrafted rookie free agent with the Atlanta Falcons in 2014 but was released during training camp.

Preseason special teams play, particularly his block of a Carolina Panthers punt in the Steelers" final preseason game, helped earn him a spot on the Pittsburgh roster. He was singled out by Mike Tomlin for the play after the game.

Steelers react to losing control of the AFC Wild Card race

Nix has played in every game for the Steelers this season, featuring primarily on special teams, though he does have two catches for 16 yards this season. Will Johnson, who has been working as tight end most of the year, is Pittsburgh"s only other fullback on the active roster.

Pittsburgh promoted practice squad inside linebacker L.J. Fort to the team"s active roster. He joined the Steelers mid-training camp on Aug. 19, was released in the final round of cuts and signed to the practice squad the next day.

Carson Palmer unlikely to rest Sunday for Cardinals, fantasy owners

Matt Kartozian-USA TODAY Sports

The Cardinals will have something to play for on Sunday, with the Panthers" game being flexed to 4:25. We break down the fantasy implications.

The Arizona Cardinals will not have a meaningless game against theSeattle Seahawks on Sunday, now that the Panthers" kickoff has been flexed to 4:25 p.m.

A Carolina Panthers win would lock the Cardinals into the No. 2 seed in the NFC, but with the Cardinals playing at the same time, they do not have the luxury of resting their starters. It no longer puts head coach Bruce Arians and his staff in a bizarre situation, one that would have him preparing his starters throughout the week only to yank them early on.

Fantasy impact: Arians gave his starters some rest during Week 16"s blowout win over the Green Bay Packers, but it is difficult to envision that scenario happening once again in Week 17. Fantasy owners with Carson Palmer can keep him penned into lineups.

The Seahawks defense poses a tough challenge, but it is one that Palmer and the Cardinals starters have already proven they can overcome. Palmer"s fantasy owners can continue starting him as planned with Sunday"s game having meaning.

Dallas Storms: At Least 11 Dead After Tornadoes & Severe Weather Hit Texas

Severe storms and tornadoes have torn through the Dallas suburbs, killing 11 and leaving 15others injured. The raging storm is expected to continue, with more terrifying weather possiblyhittingthe area.

Intense tornadoes and rainstorms hit suburban Dallas on Saturday, December 26, essentially obliterating the area. With 11 people dead, and 15 others injured, its a nightmare of a scene as uninjured survivors struggle to get to shelter and safety out of the eye of the storm.

The Garland area of Dallas was hit the hardest by the storm, with eight casualties out of the total 11, asLt. Pedro Barineau with the Garland Police Department confirmed to CNN. According to Lt. Barineau, the 15 injured were also located in the town; 600 structures were brutally damaged as well.

In some areas of the town, the facades of houses were just completely ripped off by the storm, leaving gaping holes where walls should be. Some cars that had been in driveways had been hurled into houses by the force of the storm. According to officials in Garland, five out of the eight deaths werecaused when cars were hit by tornadoes. No other details were given. How sickening!

The three additional deaths occurred over in Collins County, according toChris Harvey, the spokesperson for the local police department. There is no word on the cause of death yet; Harvey has indicated the department still needs to assess the situation before revealing what happened.

Garland residents painted a horrifying picture of what it was like when the massive tornado hit their homes. Its unlike anything weve ever heard. All I heard was the roaring of the tornado, and my mom told us to get in the bathroom, said Pat McMillian of Garland. Then we went across the hall to make sure everyone was OK. The church across the street was destroyed. We are in our car now, and Im not sure where we are going to go. Its extremely hot, and there is no power. They watched their neighborhood, and others, extinguish into complete darkness.

Other Dallas neighborhoods are experiencing the same tragedy. A large tornado was spotted nearDeSoto, just south of Dallas. A tornado was headed toward eastern Ellis County as well, according to the Fort Worth branch of the National Weather Service. Its unclear if this is the same tornado thats already torn up many parts of Dallas, or the beginnings of an even larger storm than previously thought.

NFL playoff scenarios: Steelers" shocking loss has all eyes on AFC

Published on Dec. 27, 2015

Monday night"s matchup between Cincinnati and Denver is huge for the Bengals and Broncos ... and the Texans, Colts and Chiefs. Beyond playoff seeding and the South winner, the Steelers" stunning loss to the Ravens on Sunday has all eyes on the AFC.

Though nineNFL teams have clinched playoff berths, only Washington islocked in its spot (NFC"s No. 4 seed). Here"s a team-by-team breakdown of playoff scenarios as Week 16 winds down.

Stay with us, now...

PHOTOS: Best of Week 16 | MORE: Sunday NFL scoreboard, stats

AFC

Steelers (9-6) Sunday"s loss in Baltimore was a knockout blow. Pittsburgh now needs a Week 17 win in Cleveland and a Jets loss in Buffalo to sneak back in for a wild-card spot. Another scenario: If the Bengals beat the Broncos on Monday, the Steelers could sneak in with another Broncos loss (to the Chargers in Week 17) and a win over the Browns.

MORE: Steelers" line flaws have them gasping for playoff air

Jets (10-5) New York, with its win over New England and Pittsburgh"s loss to Baltimore,is for now in the playoffs. The Jets can clinch their wild-card spot with a Week 17 win over the Bills or a Steelers loss.

Chiefs (10-5) Kansas City secured a playoff berth with its win over Cleveland and Pittsburgh"s loss. The Chiefs would move into first place in the AFC West with a Broncos loss Monday, and they"d win the division with either a Week 17 win over the Raiders or a Broncos loss to the Chargers.

Texans (8-7) Houston"s blowout win over Tennessee on Sunday was key for its chances, even though Indianapolis beat Miami. Due to a strength of victory tiebreaker in the division, the Texans would take the AFC South and a playoff berth with a Bengals win Monday. If the Broncos win Monday, the Texans need a Week 17 win or a Colts loss.

Colts (7-8) Indianapolis all of the sudden is a huge fan of Denver and Jacksonville. The Colts need the Bengals to lose Monday and the Texans to lose in Week 17 (plus a win over the Titans, of course) to take the AFC South back from Houston.

Bengals (11-3) Cincinnati won the AFC North and secured a home playoff game with Pittsburgh"s loss to Baltimore. The Bengals can still sneak into the AFC"s No. 1 overall seed if they win out and the Patriots lose to the Dolphins in Week 17.

Broncos (10-4) Thanks to Pittsburgh"s Week 16 loss, Denver can secure a playoff spot with a win over Cincinnati. But if the Broncos lose, they"ll need a Week 17 win over the Chargers to avoid a potential slide all the way out of the playoffs, depending on the result of the Jets-Bills game (a New York win in that case would bump Denver from the tournament). Even if the Broncos win Monday, the Chiefs can steal the division in Week 17 with a win and a Denver loss.

STEELE: Peyton Manning doesn"t sound innocent ... yet

Patriots (12-3) New England failed to clinch the AFC"s No. 1 overall seed with its loss in New York, but it can do so in Week 17 with a win over Miami. Another Patriots loss would open the door for the Bengals (if they win out) to slide into the top seed.

MORE: Patriots claim overtime kickoff was no mistake

NFC

Cardinals (12-2) NFC West-champion Arizona is still alive for the conference"s No. 1 overall seed, thanks to Carolina"s loss inAtlanta on Sunday. The Cardinals, after their win over the Packers, need another Panthers loss in Week 17 and a win at home over Seahawks to pull it off. Arizona didclinch a first-round bye (at least the No. 2 seed) with Sunday"s win over Green Bay.

Panthers (14-1) Carolina, 14-1 and already assured a first-round bye, can seal the NFC"s No. 1 overall seed with a Week 17 win over the Buccaneers or a Cardinals loss.

Packers (10-5) Green Bay already clinched a playoff berth, so Sunday"s loss in Arizona only hurts its chances to win the NFC North. The Packers" Week 17 matchup with the Vikings will be a de facto divisiontitle game, with the winner earning a home playoff game as the No. 3 seed, and the loser settling for a wild-card spot. Green Bay can fall no further than the No. 5 seed.

Vikings (10-5) Minnesotasecured a playoff spot with Sunday night"swin over the Giants. The Vikings cantakethe NFC North with a win over the Packers in Week 17, but a loss would drop them to a wildcard. If the Vikings lose to the Packers, the Seahawks would needawin over the Cardinals totake the No. 5 seed.

Seahawks (9-6) Seattle already locked up a wild-card spot, so Sunday"sloss to St. Louis only affects seeding. TheVikings" winleaves the Seahawks at No. 6 heading into Week 17, but a Minnesota loss and a Seattle win would swap the seeds. Green Bay would take the No. 5 seed over Seattle if the Packers fall to the wild card.

Pittsburgh Steelers" James Harrison calls Al Jazeera Delta-2 report "B.S."

BALTIMORE -- Pittsburgh Steelers outside linebacker James Harrison was one of several NFL players named in a Huffington Post report on Al Jazeera"s investigation, "The Dark Side," which reportsthat he used Delta-2, a steroid-like hormone supplement.

The Huffington post cites the unreleased documentary as heavily leaning on secretly filmed video ofAustin, Texas-based pharmacist Charlie Sly. The video is recorded by Liam Collins, a former British hurdler who goes undercover for the investigation withthe pretense of trying to make and succeed at the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Sly told Collins that he supplied Harrison with Delta-2, according to The Huffington Post"s report on the investigation. When pressed by Al Jazeera, according to The Huffington Post, Sly also said his claims of supplying athletes weren"t true.

Speaking after the Steelers" 20-17 loss to the Baltimore Ravenson Sunday, Harrison, 37, denied the claims of the report and said he took it as a compliment that people would think he has used performance-enhancing drugs.

"Plainly, it is bull****," Harrison said. "I"ve never heard of those guys. I never took a steroid and I don"t plan to. Just because somebody says something doesn"t mean it"s true."

Steelers vs. Ravens: Breaking down Antonio Brown, Martavis Bryant game plan

Harrison added that he was disappointed because he felt the report undermined he work of his 13 seasons in the NFL, which includes five Pro Bowl selections, two Super Bowl titles and the 2009 defensive player of the year award.

People that know Harrison though, he said, know the report isn"t true.

"I could say "You"re gay, you"re a homosexual." Just popping it out there," Harrison said to a TV reporter. "It"s not true, but you have to fight that. But I have to fight it because I look like it."

"I consider it a compliment to be honest with you. They"re too weak-minded to understand the work that it takes to get to this level without that."

Harry Potter hopeful shouts up a storm

MARK.TAYLOR@WAIKATOTIMES.CO.NZ

Ten-year-old Emily Broughton wanted to be in Harry Potter. She became the face of a car advert instead.

Last year, Emily Broughton saw auditions were underway for the new Harry Potter film and the 10-year-old got excited. Broughton always wanted to be an actress.

"I"m a Harry Potter nut and there were some auditions for the "next Hermione", but I couldn"t go because it was in London."

Instead, her mother signed her up to a talent agency so she could have more acting opportunities and be exposed to the industry.

MARK TAYLOR / FAIRFAX NZ

The face of 2CheapCars: 10-year-old Emily Broughton at home with dog, Daisy.

That call has turned Broughton into a TV phenomenon, and not one that everybody appreciates.

A term later, she got a call to audition for a series of ads for Japanese car importer 2CheapCars.

"I auditioned for it and there was a second round. I had to go to their studio and got filmed a bit. [The audition] was basically like the adverts."

Rob O"Neill

2CheapCars launched an unrelenting series of 15 second advertising noise-fests in late 2015 featuring Emily Broughton.

Broughton got the part and before the Rugby World Cup kicked off, she filmed the first advertisement that had her cram long scripts into 15 second segments. She was told to shout it all.

It was a long day for Broughton, who left tired and with a sore throat - but she enjoyed every minute of it.

"I was really excited and I couldn"t really believe I got my first job and was going to be on TV."

Although she talks at a normal speed and volume in real life, acting as TV"s "shouty girl" wasn"t too hard.

"I suppose it"s not that difficult because I do shout a bit. Sometimes, my little sister goes out on the farm in the morning to catch some turkeys and mum asks me to go find her. So I go to the back of the hill and yell for her.

"So I get some practice."

There"s been a bit of backlash from people who hate hearing her shout about cars for 15 seconds, but Broughton just shrugs it off. She was just doing what she was told, after all.

"She dealt with it amazingly," said her mum, Julia. "She did everything she was asked to do and was very professional about all of it.

"It was a bit surreal I suppose.

"Friends have all been very nice. But there was one guysaying she drove him nuts, which is fine and I understand that totally, but she just did what she was asked to do by the company and she did it very well."

While her mum wants to protect her, she doesn"t shelter her away from the negative press.

"I"ve shown her all of it and we"ve had a laugh about it. She"s not worried. They"re entitled to their opinions. There are plenty of ads on TV that annoy me as well."

The family hope it will be the first of many acting opportunities for Broughton, whose dreams are bigger than a 15-second advert.

"Something to do with a big, action-packed movie or stage performance, like Les Miserables or a big musical like that, that would be really fun. I"m not very good at dancing, I"m okay at singing, but my thing is acting."

Broughton bought an iPad with her earnings, but will also donate $150 to a Scottish charity called Mary"s Meals, which feeds school children in Africa, as well as $150 to the SPCA.

"I just like animals," she said.

INSIDE THE SHOUTING STRATEGY

Paul White, programme leader of advertising creativity at AUT, is no fan of shouty advertising but he can see why retailers do it.

"I"m one of those people who get rid of it as quick as you can," he said.

White draws a big distinction between the two shoutiest advertisements on TV right now, Hyundai"s "Get Lost" campaign, which won Fair Go"s worst ad award for 2015, and a series of 15 second unrelenting noise-fests from 2CheapCars.

Hyundai is completely different because there is an idea behind it, he said.

"It"s a four wheel drive and the idea is "Dad go somewhere where we"ll be lost". Even though the person is shouting that"s completely coincidental."

In contrast 2CheapCars is a classic "hard retail" play, White said.

"It"s saying "We are the super retail people as far as cars go. If you expect Harvey Norman and the rest to shout at you we are in that category but we"re shouting even louder - so we"re really cheap."

"They are quite happy to risk putting people off."

But such "cheap" advertising comes at a price.

"You have to spend heaps of money to make it work. Harvey Norman is at the top of advertising spend. It doesn"t work any other way."

White said he imagines what 2CheapCars is doing is going hard for concentrated periods so TV viewers can"t get away.

"That"s not to suggest it"s the best way to do it but it is a retail technique that"s used a lot," White said.

White suggests it could be time for an alternative approach.

"Some might say if everybody else is shouting you might get heard more easily if you whisper, which would be my point of view."

It"s Time For Lakers To Give Keys To Kids And Hope For Lotto Luck

Five wins, twenty four losses. With over a quarter of the NBA season gone, the Los Angeles Lakers are on pace to win a whopping seventeen games, which is four less than last years franchise-worst team. While most expected the Lakers to struggle this season, few could have predicted that they would be this bad.

They feature a deadly combination of a terrible offense AND defense, which creates a perfect storm that allows opponents to toss around terms like career-high and franchise-best. Most of the optimism that radiated from Los Angeles to start the year is long gone, and fans have hunkered down for another long winter.

However, despair isnt necessarily warranted, especially during the holiday season. It may not be pleasant, but the Lakers mountain of losses have had the positive effect of illuminating the correct path going forward. With the team clearly out of playoff contention, Lakers management wont be tempted by win-now moves at the trade deadline, and can instead focus on finding pieces that fit for the future.

It also has to be mentioned that the Lakers first-round draft pick next summer falls into the clutches of the Philadelphia Sixers unless it is in the top-three. At their current spot of 29th in the league, LA has only a 55 percent chance on hanging on to their precious pick, and the odds get worse should they move up in the standings. If they manage to drop to the worst record in the league, they would jump to a 65 percent chance at retaining it, but Philadelphia has a death-grip on that spot thanks to their Herculean tanking efforts.

The odds of keeping the draft pick are certainly nerve-wracking, but with the team settling comfortably into the second-worst record in the league and dreams of the playoffs long gone, they will have to roll the dice and hope that their luck in the lottery holds out. A prolonged winning streak would be detrimental to their cause, and as such veteran players will likely see their roles reduced.

This means that at some point, the Lakers youngsters are going to be turned loose. If the precedent that was set last season is followed then we will see Coach Byron Scott shuffle lineups every fifteen games or so, just to see if he stumbles across a particularly potent combination. It wont be pretty, but its time to focus on the future.

Fortunately, the Lakers do have legitimate young talent to develop, with DAngelo Russell, Julius Randle, and Jordan Clarkson joined by projected role players like Larry Nance Jr., Anthony Brown, and Tarik Black (assuming Black gets off the bench). Scott has taken quite a bit of criticism for his handling of the Lakers youth this season, but soon the teams record will dictate they be thrust into a larger role, just as it did last January when Clarkson stepped into a starting role.

Scott recently met with Lakers GM Mitch Kupchak regarding the teams plans going forward, and then inserted rookie Anthony Brown into the starting lineup for a matchup with Kevin Durant and the Thunder last weekend. Brown struggled to deal with Durant and the Lakers lost by 40, but it still showed a willingness to throw the young kids into the fire, wins be damned. Its that kind of thinking that is bound to take hold as the season slips away.

Of course, Scott does have to balance developing the youth with providing a stage for Kobe Bryants swan song. It can sometimes be a difficult balancing act, but the knowledge that Kobe provides to the youngsters can be incredibly beneficial, even if his presence on the court often doesnt allow the kids to take off the training wheels.

Knowing youre not going to get into the playoffs and knowing that Kobe is not going to be here a year from now, it makes you want to focus as a manager on the young players. But the reality is, although Kobe isnt going to be here next year, he will be with us for the rest of the year. This is his 20th season. Hes just had a ridiculous career. The fans on the road, our fans around the world, want to see him play.

-Mitch Kupchak

With a Kobe and the kids strategy moving forward and the draft pick surprisingly in play, at the trade deadline expect to see the expendable veterans Lou Williams, Nick Young, Roy Hibbert, and Brandon Bass shopped heavily. LA should be looking to receive some combination of young players, cap space, or draft picks in return, although the value of each of those players can be tricky to determine.

The Lakers have proven year after year that they wont pull the trigger on a deal unless their asking price is met (they held on to Pau Gasol in 2014 because no one would cough up a first-rounder), but there are a number of teams that could use the services of LAs vets, which may give GM Mitch Kupchak a chance to get a deal done.

Of course, the negative consequence of racking up losses, trading the vets, and letting the young players grow is that the Lakers will likely once again struggle to land a major free agent next summer. Most everyone will have cap space thanks to the juicy new TV deal kicking in, and with the demand for talent far outweighing supply free agents will pass over the Lakers in favor of teams that are ready to win now. Losing isnt necessarily a bad thing in the NBA, but it does leave a stench that most free agents find repulsive as long as there are other options available.

Furthermore, Kobe Bryant wont receive the storybook ending that he deserves, but with the teams record going Hindenburg already that outcome appears to be unavoidable. Bryant will have to make do with a farewell tour that is light on wins and heavy on nostalgia; but the $25 million he is making this season should allow him to cope just fine.

At the end of the day, the eternity spanning the last game of the regular season (April 4th) to the draft lottery (May 17th) will feature plenty of prayers to the Basketball Gods, but should the Lakers land a top-three pick, the future will look extremely bright and hope will return to Lakers Nation. Should they lose the pickwell, safe to say that would be very, very bad. Like Indiana Jones 4 bad.

Thats the risk the Lakers would be taking, but at 5-24 their options are limited, and doing what they can to hang on to the second-worst record in the league at least gives them a 55 percent chance of landing a top three player, and 19.9 percent chance of getting the No. 1 pick. Landing someone like consensus top pick Ben Simmons would go a long ways towards clearing the cloudy skies over the STAPLES Center.

Point Break

The idea of achieving enlightenment, if not just a breed of physical perfection, is embedded in the more grueling fitness regimes of the day. Ultimate fighters, extreme-sports nuts, and CrossFitters alike seem to unite in habits that split the difference between the militaristic and religious: They engage in ascetic, anachronistic diets and unholy, life-denying training regimens, exhibiting elevated senses of self-worth. Ericson Core"s remake of Point Break takes the modern athlete"s Zen-like aspirations to one logical extreme. In its philosophical and criminal investigations (largely imported from Kathryn Bigelow"s original), the film moves in dozens of illogical directions, but not without achieving a patina of earnest credibility.

Johnny Utah (Luke Bracey) is the newly minted FBI agent tasked with infiltrating a band of thieves suspected of undermining capitalistic tendencies with brazen criminal acts. In the original, their feats had a compellingly narrow purpose: The Ex-Presidents just followed the surf, funding lives spent off the grid by robbing local banks. In the remake, the criminal element are suspected international eco-terrorists. For their first trick, they invade a diamond vault on motorcycles, ransack it, and parachute out of the building, before handing the jewels over to impoverished citizens of Mumbai.

Utah, a motocross specialist who retires from the sport after the death of his best friend, smells the whiff of the extreme-sports poly-athlete. He hypothesizes that the criminals" Robin Hood tactics are being integrated into the Ozaki Eight, a fictional series of diverse athletic feats that honor the varying forces of nature with the ultimate promise of enlightenment. Utah, alongside partner-in-crime Angelo Pappas (Ray Winstone), meets up with the suspects in a historic storm swell off the coast of France. Core, pulling double-duty as Point Break"s cinematographer, gives rolling waves a strikingly literal definition. When Utah attempts to show off for the group, the waves swallow him up. As in the original, the inciting incident both confirms his amateurism and leads him to charismatic leader Bodhi (dgar Ramrez).

It"s rarely clear where we are or how we got here, but itnonetheless delivers some vertiginous 3D thrills.

Part of the lasting appeal of Bigelow"s original is how it serves as both a product of and a modest corrective to the heedless capitalism of its era: The film"s restless, peak-Bruckheimer edits mellowed at the beach, mirroring Utah"s philosophical lure to Bodhi, who merely sought a way ought of the system. Core"s version, written by Kurt Wimmer, has the makings of a more complex ideological agenda. Using Utah"s shallow pragmatism (and Lacey"s dim performance) as a cudgel, Bodhi questions Utah"s ability to commit himself to self-abnegating acts, and criticizes his past as a peddler of sports drinks. Bodhi, along with his bearded, steely-eyed, Occupy-chic peers, espouse enlightenment and purity while condemning capitalism and global warming. At the same time, they"re funded by a young, slimy French millionaire and take refuge at chillwave yacht parties in international waters and modernist micro-structures buried on European mountainsides.

Point Break doesn"t make much of this hypocrisy, perhaps because it"s too busy glossing over a series of plot holes that jostle the foundations of the time-space continuum. (In one instance, Utah traces Bodhi to a bank in a remote Italian village, and arrives there from an FBI office before the robbery is complete.) Utah joins Bodhi and company for an epic snowboard ride, and a wing-suited glide through the sky and craggy chasms. It"s rarely clear where we are or how we got here, but Core nonetheless delivers some vertiginous 3D thrills. Like the rest of the film, his action sequences lack clear purpose or spatial goals, but they thrive in the moment. Frames filled with water or pure white snow (and lots of impressive stunt work) deliver on some of Bodhi"s vague, increasingly redundant promises of nirvana.

It"s quite late in the game before Utah has to reconcile his sympathy with Bodhi and his podunk sense of right and wrong, and any shred of moral ambiguity is quickly and dispiritingly set aside. Ramrez, though, grants Bodhi"s gnomic musings an element of s*x appeal that elevates both their meaninglessness and the elusiveness of his character. With his help, Point Break has a searching quality that, however inarticulate, is in tune with a political moment where the individual realizes their powerlessness and then tries to disrupt the powerful anyway, seeking out aesthetic bliss and physical mastery at the same time. When, at the film"s climax, a character says, Isn"t it beautiful?, over and over in increasingly urgent tones, you might briefly feel like you"ve stumbled into a Michael Mann movie rather than this structurally inept but very nearly thoughtful one.

The Extreme Stunts of "Point Break"

Since surfing was central to the first movie, the filmmakers wanted to include it again, but at a higher level.

Laird Hamilton, a pioneering big-wave surfer, contributed his skills to the shoot and also played a character in the film.

But shooting the scenes proved to be a challenge because enormous, surfable waves are rare and unpredictable.

We were looking all over the world to try to find out where those waves were going to hit and when, Mr. Core said.

A crew went to a surf break called Jaws in Maui months before principal photography began on the film.

We had to get crew ready for a break that may or may not even hit Hawaii, he said.

Luckily, enormous swells arrived. The crew ran nine cameras in the water, on cliffs and on helicopters to capture the action.

NFL players, owners and fans all to blame for concussions danger

Concussion protocol.

If you"re a fan of the National Football League, as I am, you are very familiar with this relatively new term regarding players" long-term health and the game"s safety upgrades.

In a nutshell, it"s a five-stage process that players follow as they recover from a concussion. And make no mistake, players get concussions on a regular basis during practice and games. It"s as inevitable as Jay Cutler throwing a mind-boggling interception or a strip-sack-fumble by the Bears beleaguered quarterback.

The NFL"s concussion protocol is a four-page document compiled by the league"s head, neck and spine committee, with contributions from the NFL Players Association, the NFL Physicians Society and the Professional Football Athletic Trainers Society.

It essentially outlines five steps that a concussed player must pass before being allowed to play again in a game at full contact. Nevertheless, it"s not that clear-cut in real-life situations, as the protocol details state.

"Each player and each concussion is unique," the document states. "Therefore, there is no set timeframe for return to participation or for the progression through the steps of the graduated exercise program set forth below. Recovery time will vary from player to player."

Because of this wiggle room, some players can be out for a few days while other players can be out for weeks or months. This, however, is unlikely because of a cold, sobering truth about the NFL players want to play at almost any cost, and NFL team owners want them to play at almost any cost. Period.

It"s a multi-billion dollar business that has become a near religious experience each Sunday in this country. This fact can never be forgotten, not even by a concussed player or a concussed fan base.

After years of debates, lawsuits and even the deaths of former players, this already contentious issue is back on the field of play with "Concussion," the controversial movie released on Christmas Day.

Starring Will Smith and Alec Baldwin, the film dramatizes the game-changing discovery by forensic pathologist Dr. Bennet Omalu. He explored chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in deceased NFL players. The film shows Omalu"s tireless efforts to expose his findings to fans, the league and mainstream America.

None of us wanted to hear it, or believe it.

NFL players are our modern-day gladiators, and they act like it. It"s on them to first decide to play the game, and then to continue playing after the first tackle, the first injury or the first concussion. Rarely do any of them choose to quit on their own unless their deteriorating body dictates it.

When the family of late Chicago Bears Super Bowl champion Dave Duerson sued the NFL, essentially blaming the league for his suicide, I felt badly for the family. But I still didn"t entirely agree with the collective lawsuit, accusing the NFL of knowing the harmful effects of the repeated head concussions Duerson absorbed as a player. And also not sharing such crucial medical information with him or other players.

When I first wrote about this issue in 2011, many readers slammed me for not entirely blaming the league for its greedy negligence. I do blame the league, which is based on greed as much as the game itself, but I also blame the players.

At the NFL level, players know full well the obvious dangers of the dangerous sport, including multiple concussions. They don"t care. Or at least they don"t care enough to stop playing on their own.

They"re addicted to the game, the accolades, the money and the fame. And, with many of them, they pay for it with their body, their health and sometimes their life. We"ve watched their sad tales of severe memory loss, crippling brain disease and allegations of suicides caused by CTE. The new film only dramatizes what most of us already know.

A concussion is a type of traumatic brain injury that changes the way the brain normally works. It"s typically caused by bump, blow or jolt to the head. And even getting "dinged" or having "your bell rung," as they say in the NFL, can be serious business.

Most concussions occur without loss of consciousness. And players who"ve had a concussion in their career have an increased risk for another concussion, and another, and another.

Many of our retired gridiron heroes have come forward to say they have some form of brain damage from their glory days. Joe Namath, Brett Favre, Tony Dorsett, Terry Bradshaw, Harry Carson, the list goes on and it will continue to grow.

I have no pity for them.

Deep down, even those old-school players knew football couldn"t really be "safe" (especially with such little padding, ill-equipped protection and faulty helmets). Still, they wanted to believe it was, like all of us want to believe our own self-serving delusions and rationalizations.

As with most things in life, this issue comes down to personal responsibility. It"s like smokers who blame cigarettes or obese people who blame fast food or, ahem, newspaper columnists who complain of not making much money or losing their job in a dying industry.

On this football Sunday, let"s remember what former Michigan State University football coach Duffy Daugherty and Geen Bay Packers legend Vince Lombardi are both credited with saying: "Football is not a contact sport, it"s a collision sport. Dancing is a contact sport." End of description.

And with this truism, the players" passion for the sport collides with their own self-preservation. Deep down, every NFL player knows this fact yet they try their best to pretend it"s not true, even these days amid so much evidence of proof.

Maybe they should consider a new term I"m coining today longevity protocol. They won"t. As a fan, I"m fine with it. They collide at dangerous speeds and angles while I watch and cheer.

Man Hopes Whoever Stole His Snoopy Decoration Will "Have A Very Merry Christmas"

By Lauren DiSpirito

GOLDEN, Colo. (CBS4) Its not your everyday inflatable Santa or reindeer, so when Dennis Jones Snoopy decoration went missing from his front lawn in Golden on Wednesday, he thought maybe the culprit had been inspired by the recent Peanuts movie.

I just said, You stole our Snoopy, really?" Jones said.

Jones discovered it missing after going through a walk in his neighborhood on Foothill Circle. He thinks whoever took the blow-up decoration probably snatched it sometime between 7 and 8 a.m.

He was so unnerved by the un-Christmas-like action, he painted a sign saying just that, and planted it in his front yard.

Come on, Jones said when asked about the decoration, Dontdo that to anyone, and that was the thought I wanted to get across.

(credit: CBS)

Jones said the discovery was a letdown as he puts the decoration out each year for his grandchildren.

His 7-year-old grandson Jackson Gerson said he was disappointed when his family pulled up to the home for Christmas Eve celebrations with his grandparents.

Our dad read the sign over there and Im like, Why did somebody take Snoopy," Gerson said.

Jones said hes less concerned with the petty theft, or catching who did it.

Without malice, he said he wants the best for whoever took it this holiday, and wants to spread a message of Christmas cheer, rather than Grinch-like behavior.

Hopefully, whoever took it will have a very Merry Christmas, Jones said.

Cruz Slams Washington Post Cartoonist for Poking at Children

Republican presidential candidate Ted Cruz slammed a cartoonist at The Washington Post for satirizing the Texas senator"s two children, whom he used in a campaign ad reading parodies of two Christmas classics.

The first-term Cruz said on Twitter:

He was bashing Post cartoonist Ann Telnaes, who depicted Cruz"s daughters Caroline, 7, and Catherine, 4 as monkeys leashed to their father"s organ-grinder in a cartoon published earlier Tuesday.

"There is an unspoken rule in editorial cartooning that a politicians children are off-limits," Telnaes said in introducing the cartoon. "But when a politician uses his children as political props, as Ted Cruz recently did in his Christmas parody video in which his eldest daughter read (with her fathers dramatic flourish) a passage of an edited Christmas classic, then I figure they are fair game."

With the cartoon receiving a lot of backlash, the Post not only pulled the image from the site, but it was also replaced by an editor"s note from Fred Hiatt which stated, "Its generally been the policy of our editorial section to leave children out of it. I failed to look at this cartoon before it was published. I understand why Ann thought an exception to the policy was warranted in this case, but I do not agree."

The video featured Caroline reading "The Grinch Who Lost Her Emails," in an apparent reference to the Hillary Clinton email scandal.

In 2013, Cruz read the Dr. Seuss book "Green Eggs and Ham" to his daughters during the nearly 22 hours he spoke on the Senate floor against Obamacare.

Other "classics" touted in the commercial include "How Obamacare Stole Christmas" and "Rudolph, The Underemployed Reindeer."

The ad ran in Iowa during last week"s episode of "Saturday Night Live" and it was made to look like one of the show"s own parody commercials.

Reno urged to prepare for worse as earthquakes continue

RENO, Nev. Scientists urged residents of northern Nevada"s largest city to prepare for a bigger event as the area continued rumbling Saturday after the largest earthquake in a two-month-long series of temblors.

More than 100 aftershocks were recorded on the western edge of the city after a magnitude 4.7 quake hit Friday night, the strongest quake around Reno since one measuring 5.2 in 1953, said researchers at the seismological laboratory at the University of Nevada, Reno.

The latest quake swept store shelves clean, cracked walls in homes and dislodged rocks on hillsides, but there were no reports of injuries or widespread major damage.

Seismologists said the recent activity is unusual because the quakes started out small and continue to build in strength. The normal pattern is for a main quake followed by smaller aftershocks.

"A magnitude 6 quake wouldn"t be a scientific surprise," John Anderson, director of the seismological lab, said Saturday. "We certainly hope residents are taking the threat seriously after last night."

But Anderson stressed there was no way to predict what would happen, and said the sequence of quakes also could end without a major one.

Reno"s last major quake measured 6.1 on April 24, 1914, and was felt as far away as Berkeley, Calif., said Craig dePolo, research geologist with the Nevada Bureau of Mines and Geology.

A rockslide triggered by Friday night"s quake was blamed for causing a 125-foot breach in a wooden flume that carries water to one of two water treatment plants in Reno, a city of about 210,000.

A backup pump was used to divert water to the plant, and the breach was not expected to cause any water shortages, said Aaron Kenneston, Washoe County emergency management officer.

The U.S. Geological Survey said Friday night"s quake was centered around Mogul, just west of Reno. The area of upscale homes along the eastern Sierra was rattled by more than 100 quakes the day before, the strongest a magnitude 4.2 that caused high-rise casinos to sway in downtown Reno.

The strongest aftershock measured 3.7 and was recorded early Saturday.

Mike Lentini of Reno said Friday night"s quake felt "like a big truck hit the building" and awakened his family.

"It"s the unknown. It"s shaking, and when"s it going to stop?" he said Saturday. "And when stuff starts falling off the shelves it"s a whole other ballgame."

Jars of mayonnaise and bottles of ketchup and shampoo fell from shelves at a Wal-Mart store in northwest Reno. Overhead televisions swayed at a sports bar in neighboring Sparks, 11 miles east, where bartender Shawn Jones said the rumble was significantly stronger than Thursday"s event.

"The bottles were shaking, so I sent everybody outside," he said.

Hundreds of mostly minor quakes have occurred along one or possibly more faults since the sequence began Feb. 28, said Ken Smith, a seismologist at the Reno laboratory. The quakes have occurred along an area about 2 miles long and a half-mile wide.

"We can"t put a number on it, but the probability of a major earthquake has increased with this sequence," Smith said Saturday. "People need to prepare for ground shaking because there"s no way to say how this will play out."

Among other things, scientists urged residents to stock up on water and food, to learn how to turn off water and gas, and to strap down bookshelves, televisions and computers.

"It"s getting a little bit frightening," Daryl DiBitonto of Reno told the Reno Gazette-Journal. "I"m very concerned about this increase in not only activity, but also in magnitude."

The quakes around Reno began a week after a magnitude 6 temblor in the northern Nevada town of Wells, near the Utah border. The Feb. 21 quake caused an estimated $778,000 in damage to homes, schools and historic downtown buildings, dePolo said.

Scientists said they"re unsure whether the seismic activity at opposite sides of Nevada is related.

Nevada is the third most seismically active state in the U.S. behind California and Alaska. The Wells quake was the 15th of at least magnitude 6 in the state"s 143-year history.

A magnitude-7.4 quake south of Winnemucca in 1915 is the most powerful in state history.

Joe Anderson back in the NFL, lands job with New York Jets

NEW YORK (FOX 26) - You may remember Joe Anderson from a viral Instagram post. He stood outside NRG Stadium every day with a sign, asking the Houston Texans for a job.

The ex-NFL player"s sign read, "Not homeless, but STARVING for success!! Will run routes 4 (sic) food. #Whateverittakes #UnderDog #IBelieve #Hungry"

Today, Anderson was granted what he"d worked so hard, and so long for--a job in the NFL.

The New York Jets announced Tuesday that they have signed Anderson to the team"s practice squad.

It took only six weeks from the time the post took off on social media to get to his new found glory.

"I"m overwhelmed," Anderson told FOX 26 on Tuesday. "I don"t really know what to say.

"I thank G*d for my trials and tribulations. I thank G*d for having me hold that sign."

Anderson said he appreciates all the low times he went through as he tried to get back in the league, that he hopes his story can help inspire others.

"They might not be holding a sign up, but they"re going to go through something and they"re going to need the encouragement to keep them going," Anderson said. "I"m glad that my story can be something that helps them with that encouragement."

Anderson previously spent time with the Bears in 2012 and 2013. He also spent some time with the Eagles in early 2014.

Trump: "Schlonged" is not vulgar

Story highlights
  • Donald Trump defended using the word "schlonged" to describe Hillary Clinton"s loss in 2008
  • He then attacked the mainstream media, or the MSM, for being unfair to him

"Once again, #MSM is dishonest. "Schlonged" is not vulgar. When I said Hillary got "schlonged" that meant beaten badly," he said in one tweet.

He then attacked the mainstream media, MSM for short, for being unfair to him.

"For those on TV defending my use of the word "schlonged," bc #MSM is giving it false meaning-tell them it means beaten badly. Dishonest #MSM," he said.

RELATED: Christie explains "shady" query, but won"t discuss "schlonged"

But Trump cited Tuesday what he said was a 1984 NPR report in which "schlonged" was used similarly to how he used it Monday.

"NPR"s @NealConan said "schlonged" to WaPo re: 1984 Mondale/Ferraro campaign: "That ticket went on to get schlonged at the polls." #Hypocrisy"

The controversy began Monday night when Trump used the word to slam Clinton over her 2008 primary loss to then-Sen. Barack Obama.

RELATED: Clinton will play victim over "schlonged" comment, Bush says

"Even a race to Obama, she was gonna beat Obama. I don"t know who would be worse, I don"t know, how could it be worse? But she was going to beat -- she was favored to win -- and she got schlonged, she lost, I mean she lost," Trump said.

The comment was widely criticized, and Clinton"s campaign said Tuesday that Trump"s "degrading language" hurts women.

Festivus, Atheist Santa, and the Invention of Blasphemy

With the arrival of the touring Seinfeld apartment in Los Angeles just in time for Festivus, the recent proliferation of anti-holiday cards(the Virgin Mary slept around!) and anatheist billboardfeaturing an anti-church Santa, one could argue Christmas has become a nationwide exercise in tipping over sacred cows.

I recently spoke via Skype withS. Brent Rodriguez-Plate,longtime RD contributor, about how the supposedly blasphemous has become the everyday and how new narratives of the Christmas season are changing how we celebrate.

__________

Do you feel the increased observance of Festivus shows how Christmas is becoming a more democratized holiday thats for the rest of us as they say?

Yes definitely, I feel democratizing is a good word for it and is a better way of thinking of whats happening than secularizing. Its opening up for more people.

Ive been teaching about Festivus in my classes for a long time, and Ill show the Seinfeld episode. Its this fake holiday that has actually become something realand people actually find ways to celebrate it. Some people may even argue that there is now areligious dimension to Festivus because it pulls people together and creates community and people have fun with it. Thats an important part of ritual.

Also a lot of people have time off work or off school around this time of year and whether or not they celebrate Christmas as Christians, everybody still gets the time off. Theres no hiding that thisholiday that people of all religions enjoy is there because of an initially Christian reason, but its become open to everyone, and everyone gets a chance to celebrate in their own way.

Theres been too much seriousness around Christmas and too much of a somber attitude about it.Wethink of Christmas as a kind of silent night thing, witheverything very calm and rigid. The idea of Christmas has been pacified in certain ways, butpeople are ready to break out of that and have fun.

Religious traditions die off if they dont revive some sort of festival spirit. Its happened throughout history: rituals get old, people reject them and then have to reinvest them with new energy. Its not just diversifying and democratizing, theres a certain narrative that weve bought into with Christmastime that has outlived its usefulness.

Therearea lot of creative possibilities coming out of thisdemocratization of the Christmas season.

InBlasphemy: Art That Offends, you explore the troublesome relationship between the visual and the sacred. How does that relate to the recent spateof anti-holiday cards? Would some of those be considered blasphemous?

A theme that I explored in Blasphemy is that theres no such thing as a blasphemous image per seblasphemy requires an accuser.

In the current environment, where we do have freedom of speech, we can do whatever we want with sacred images. It only becomes interesting when someone of authority labels it as blasphemy, and then it enters into a larger social context.

There are a lot of those who struggle with what is sacred and why its sacred and to figure that out, you have to profane it a little bit. You have to push on the line between sacred and profane. For one group, there is a clear line between what is sacred and what is profane, whereas theother side believes the line is somewhere elsethats where the clash comes.

For example, Jesus has become such a common figure that his imageisan easy target. Its to the point where one must question whether theimage of Jesus is culturally sacred anymore. Because ofmass media and consumer capitalism, weve profaned Jesus in our socioeconomic structurehes become the everyday.

Do you feel the sacredness that does stillsurround the image of Jesus has extended to other images that dont even have Christian origins? (i.e. Santa Claus, Christmas trees or even the reindeer on Starbucks cups)

Santa comes from a Christian tradition; hecomes from an actual saint. But then he becomesincreasingly secularized, and he now doesnt really have a connection with the church. But through time, he becomes kind of sanctified, and becomes anintegral part of the modern American Christian tradition.

And then theres the Christmas tree, which comes from pagan traditions in Europe, but has become asacred symbol.

The controversy over the Starbucks cups is the perfect example of how we made something that has no religious connection into a sacred thing. It becomes sacred without religion. It becomes acollective agreement that were going to think of Christmas trees and reindeer and lights as a sacred thing.

These visuals become so ingrained that it doesnt take much to trigger them. It becomes very abstract and very simplified. And whenour cultural response to this iconographygets to that stage, it becomes easy to knock. So now ifyou remove those (sacred) elements, all of sudden theres this War on Christmas.

But for rituals to last through history, they have to constantly be remade. All these things that we think of as traditional Christmas are in fact woven in from pagan traditions, and from all these different backgrounds. Its an artistic process.

As Christmas becomes less Christian, will the religious cling even more to the sacredness of symbols, even symbols like the Starbucks cup where the sacredness is completely imagined?

I do think these images become a place of security for some. Images of Jesus, prayer beads: we hold on to these things and they have meaning. Its a human trait to need visual, tangible symbols and for us to celebrate with them during certain times of year.

We need these rituals in our lives and these times to gather. So put up a Christmas tree or a Festivus pole or go to an atheist Sunday Assembly. They all hit on basic human needs.

The Starbucks cups incident is a great example of that. At no other point in history, could we have made such a huge deal out of a such a simple thing. Its totally dependent on the mass mediathats whatturned it into an event.

Whats different now is that its the media that makes the blasphemy. Blasphemy wouldnt exist without the media, whether social media or contemporary mass media. It needs that responsethat accusation I described earlierto exist. As our engagement with media continues to expandas a culture,so too will the invention of new forms of blasphemy.

"We"re upset and disappointed" - Sandra Bland"s sister

ROUGH CUT (no reporter narration) STORY: A Texas grand jury decided on Monday not to issue indictments relating to the death of an African-American woman who died by hanging in an apparent suicide in her jail cell, a special prosecutor said. A Waller County grand jury also decided not to indict any members of the jail staff in the case of Sandra Bland, 28, who was found dead in her cell three days after being jailed for a traffic stop this summer, said Darrell Jordan, a special prosecutor in the case. The grand jury will reconvene in January to deliberate other matters in the case, Jordan said. Sandra Bland"s family said Tuesday that they didn"t have faith in the grand jury process. "We"re upset and we"re disappointed, and that"s what we feel collectively as a family. I sit here and I tell you that we don"t have faith in a grand jury process because there is no feeling that it will be, you know, impartial or unbiased based off of the secretive nature of it," Sharon Cooper, Sandra Bland"s sister said. "The bottom line is that they get to cherrypick what evidence they submit and cherry-pick what evidence they withhold from the grand jury. When they say that you "can indict a ham sandwich," it"s because you can. If you want an indictment, as a prosecutor in a grand jury proceeding, you can get it, but if you don"t, you can do that too," Cannon Lambert, the family"s attorney said. In August, the family of Sandra Bland filed a wrongful death suit against her jailers, a Texas trooper, and a sheriff"s office, accusing them of being responsible for her hanging. Bland was pulled over in her car on July 10 by state trooper Brian Encinia for failing to signal a lane change in Prairie View, about 50 miles northwest of Houston. The stop escalated into a verbal altercation after Encinia asked Bland to put out a cigarette and she refused. Bland was arrested and charged with assaulting an officer, a felony. The discovery of Bland"s body in her cell three days later with a trash bag around her neck raised suspicions of racist treatment.

The President throws the race card at Trump on National Public Radio

From the NYT: Demographic changes and economic stresses, including flatlining wages and incomes, have meant that particularly blue-collar men have had a lot of trouble in this new economy, where they are no longer getting the same bargain that they got when they were going to a factory and able to support their families on a single paycheck, Mr. Obama said in the interview with National Public Radio. You combine those things, and it means that there is going to be potential anger, frustration, fear some of it justified, but just misdirected, the president added. I think somebody like Mr. Trump is taking advantage of that. Thats what hes exploiting during the course of his campaign.

Police union threatens Tarantino with "surprise"

The vitriolic struggle between police unions and director Quentin Tarantino, up to now confined to words,is verging into the realm of veiled threats.

The Oscar-winning filmmakerbetter watch out, warnsthe director of thenational Fraternal Order of Police, because they have a "surprise" in store in retaliation for Tarantino"s inflammatory remarks against police brutality and his refusal to back away from said remarks.

A slew of major police unions, including the FOP, have called for a boycott of Tarantino films, especially the upcoming The Hateful Eight opening on Christmas Day. The film just won theHollywood Ensemble Award for the cast during the Hollywood Film Awards on Nov. 1.

But a boycott is not enough; now the unionsreally want to hurt him where it counts, saidFOP executive director Jim PascotoThe Hollywood Reporteron Thursday.

"Something is in the works, but the element of surprise is the most important element," Pasco said. "Something could happen anytime between now and (movie premiere). And a lot of it is going to be driven by Tarantino, who is nothing if not predictable.

"The right time and place will come up and we"ll try to hurt him in the only way that seems to matter to him, and that"s economically," says Pasco.

Wait, is that a threat?asked THR. Not in the physical sense, assured Pasco.

"Police officers protect people," he says. "They don"t go out to hurt people."

But hurt movie openings? Maybe. Pasco did not return e-mail invitations to elaborate.

Nor did he detail how police unions could damage a movie another of Tarantino"s patented b****y epics, by all accountsby calling even more attention to it. The FOP has more than 330,000 members nationwide.

It"s certainly gotten a rush of advance publicity already, starting when Tarantino attended an anti-police brutality rally in New York last month and suggested that some cops who shoot civiliansare "murderers" and he stands with the "murdered."

Enraged, police union bosses started calling for a boycott and issuingbristling statements, referring to Tarantino bysuch choice terms as "depraved," a"cop-hater," and a "purveyor of degeneracy."

A Texas Republican, Ted Poe, even went to the floor of the House to denounce Tarantino"s comments as "idiotic" and to declare that they"encourage mischief and crimes against peace officers."

"Anti-police comments, like these from Hollywood, should be looked at for really what theyare," said Poe, a former prosecutor. "It isacommercial bytheHollywood film crowd to make money off of films that preach hate and violence by pandering to police haters."

For days, Tarantino ignored the shouting; then, this week, he chose specific media outlets to declare that he wasn"t intimidated, wasn"t backing down, didn"t say what the unions think he said, and even if he had, he has a First Amendment right to say what he believes without being threatened.

"Yeah, I was surprised (about the backlash)," he said on MSNBC on Wednesday night. "I was under the impression I was an American and that I had First Amendment rights, and there was no problem with me going to an anti-police-brutality protest and speaking my mind ...Just because I was at an anti-police-brutality protest doesn"t mean I"m anti-police."

Tarantino said he believes the unions are using him to steer attention away from hisassertion that citizens have "lost trust" in police in the aftermath of police shootings and by the bitter feuding between police and African-American activists over who is more victimized by the other.

NeitherTarantino nor his distributor, The Weinsten Company, have responded to the latest development in the quarrel. But others are worrying about the implications.

One tweet alluded to the threats directed at the Beatles after John Lennon compared the band"s popularity to Jesus in 1966.

Carl Dix, a spokesman for the Revolutionary Communist Party and also forRise Up October, the group that organized the rally Tarantino attended, issued a statement condemning the union"s promise of a "surprise" in language as vividas the union statements have been.

"The mafia style attack coming from Jim Pasco of the FOP would be cartoonish thuggery if it weren"t so dangerous," Dix said."Artists need to be able to speak for justice without attacks and retribution. This is why we launched #SideWtihQuentin and everyone should join us in speaking out against these bullying tactics. We should also understand that like any bully, they become most vicious when they"re exposed."

Scott Mendelson, a film-industry reporter, recalled Friday in Forbes(a magazine not usually associated with liberals)what happened a year ago, when Hollywood was so freaked out by online threats (allegedly by North Korea)against the NorthKorea-mocking movie The Interview, thatpremieres were canceled and it was briefly pulled from theaters.

Result: Much hand-wringing and moaning about giving in toterrorist threats, Mendelson wrote. What the police unions are trying to do toTarantino"s filmamounts to something similar, he wrote, calling for similar outrage:

It"s"agrand act of intimidation and absolutely beyond the pale for someone proclaiming to represent those who protect and/or serve.Considering that the police are in-fact a governmental authority, said threat against person and/or economic interest as retribution for constitutionally protected speech has potentiallycrossed the line to where thefilmmaker can say that his First Amendment rights are being violated."

Jim Alers And Cole Miller "Use The Force" At "UFC Fight Night: Dos Anjos Vs ...

On Thursday, December 17, 2015, Star Wars: The Force Awakens finally released in theaters much to the delight of fans of the epic space opera. Theyve been waiting for more than two decades to see what happens after Return of the Jedi and a little over a decade to get the bad taste out of their mouths left after Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith. Apparently, Walt Disney Studios sees the seventh episode as the one to truly break ground for the series given the fact it is the beginning of a new trilogy. Disney has done all they can to make the film appeal to an international audience. For example, Disney partnered up with SM Entertainment to hype up Star Wars: The Force Awakens, especially through a K-pop song performed by EXO titled Lightsaber.

However, the biggest promotions for Star Wars: The Force Awakens did not come from either Disney, Lucasfilm, or any promotional partnership. Most of the best promotions for the film came from fan interaction. With that in mind, Star Wars: The Force Awakens received attention during a UFC weigh-in when Jim Alers And Cole Miller engaged in a lightsaber duel.

The impromptu lightsaber duel happened during the weigh-ins for UFC Fight Night: Dos Anjos vs. Cowboy 2 (also known as UFC on Fox 17). According to Bleacher Report, Jim Alers handed Cole Miller a blue lightsaber toy after Miller weighed in. Alers, then unleashed a red lightsaber toy to commence said lightsaber duel as their staredown pose. Needless to say, all the Star Wars fans in the building found it quite entertaining.

Apparently, the lightsaber dual Jim Alers and Cole Miller had was a green light for UFC to find out if either fighter had other preferences of the geek and nerdy kind. It soon became evident with Miller, who opened up about his nerd side in an interview in which fans learned he named his 11-month-old son after the protagonist of Legend of Zelda, Link. As a matter of fact, Miller opened up about his love for the game too.

I think its just a complete game, and I like the idea of this hero. The hero is Link and he has within him the Triforce of Courage. Once you get into the timeline, youre always Link, but youre a different version each time you play and I think thats cool too, that it stays with the same character. I also like the fact that the puzzle solving and the dungeons can be challenging sometimes, and the sidequests always have very unique, kind of comical and funny side characters.

A lot of people have that nostalgia, and what do they want to play? They want to play the original Mario. But every single time a new Mario comes out or, in my case, a new Legend of Zelda comes out, its almost giving you that nostalgia. Personally, I dont want to go back and play an 8-bit game, but I like playing as the characters I played with in 8-bit games, and thats probably another reason Im so into the Legend of Zelda.

Though Jim Alers and Cole Miller had a staredown at the UFC on Fox 17 weigh-ins, their fight at the venue ended in disappointing fashion. It looked as if Miller was on his way to earning another win until Alers poked Miller in the eye. Miller told referee Herb Dean that his eye wasnt opening and probably wasnt going to, forcing Dean to wave off the bout. Thankfully, Millers eye injury wasnt as serious as the eye poke itself (which some say was two knuckles deep).

"Affluenza" Teen"s Disappearance Not Surprising, Says Father of Victim

The father of a child injured when "affluenza" teen Ethan Couch drunkenly crashed an SUV in Texas more than three years ago said he"s not surprised the infamous teen has disappeared.

"I don"t think there"s been any accountability for Ethan," said Kevin McConnell, whose then-12-year-old son Lucas was injured in the Fort Worth drunken driving crash. "I think he was never taught that actions have consequences other than the easiest way out," McConnell told NBC News.

Couch gained attention when he was sentenced to 10 years of probation for the crash, which left four people dead and nine injured, after his defense team argued that he suffered from affluenza a purported condition that refers to an upbringing so privileged that a person can"t distinguish right from wrong.

"Affluenza," however, is not recognized by the American Psychiatric Association as an official diagnosis.

The now-18-year-old went missing on Tuesday with his mother, and has been placed on Tarrant County"s most wanted list as local officials, U.S. Marshals and the FBI search desperately for him.

"At this point, I feel like, there"s no exit strategy for Ethan doing it this way. This can only lead to a path of destruction," said McConnell.

The father said the resurfacing of attention on Couch"s case over the past few days has put a strain on his family. "It"s drastically affected my family," McConnell said. "It"s brought out emotions that we shouldn"t have to be dealing with."

Lucas McConnell suffered minor injuries to his back and head in the crash, but witness his family friend lying dead on the side of the road, according to NBC Dallas-Fort Worth.

McConnell said he has forgiven Couch, but he hopes that the teen will face "swift and certain and severe punishment."

"And I think that punishment and correction might save his life. Might turn him around," McConnell said, urging Couch"s father, Fred, to do everything he can to bring his son back. The U.S. Marshal"s Service told NBC News that Fred Couch has cooperated and has talked to investigators.

If Couch is caught, he could face up to 10 years in prison, and if his mother helped him disappear, she could also face charges.

Macaulay Culkin Reprises "Home Alone" Character as Psychologically Damaged ...

I still have nightmares about this bald weirdo dude chasing me around, a grown-up Kevin McCallister complains in new web series

Kevin McCallister is back and angrier than ever.

Macaulay Culkin, whos been more into making music about pizza than acting lately, has reprised his Home Alone role in a new web series called :DRYVRS, and hes no longer the cute kid fans remember.

Looks aside, the grown-up Kevin appears to be psychologically damaged from being left behind by his family not once, but twice (well, three times if you count 2002s straight-to-DVD sequel Taking Back the House, which we dont).

I had to fend off my housefrom two psychopath home invaders. I was just a kid, a disturbed Kevin now a driver for an Uber-esque ride sharing service tells his passenger. I mean, I still have nightmares about this bald weirdo dude chasing me around.

But as it turns out, those nightmares come in handy when Kevin has to use some of his old tricks to get out of a dangerous situation.

Merry Christmas, ya filthy animals.Watch the video above.
