The Russian artist credited with painting one of the first entirely abstract works has been honoured with a Google doodle on what would have been his 148th birthday.
Wassily Kandinsky was born in Moscow in 1866 and studied law and economics at the University of Moscow, only beginning to produce art at the age of 30.
Later he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts and taught at the Bauhaus school of art and architecture in Germany from 1922 until it was shut down by the Nazis in 1933, when he left to live in France for the rest of his life.
The Nazis exhibited more than 50 of his pieces confiscated from the Bauhaus in the Degenerate Art show in 1937, then destroyed them all.
