It was just a matter of time before yet another shooting on yet another college campus.
A matter of hardly any time.
This time, it"s one of our schools: Northern Arizona University.
Maybe you went there, or one of your kids does.
This murder occurred right in front of the dorm my son lived in during his first year at NAU. Police say an early morning confrontation between two "student groups" prompted an 18-year-old freshman to pull out his pistol and start firing. When he was done, one student was dead and three others injured.
What a tragedy. What a waste. What a godsend that the carnage was limited.
This time.
I"d say this shooting will lead us to ask some questions.
Like, how gun-free are our campuses, really? Like, what more could we have done to keep a gun out of the shooter"s hands?
Like, are we doing everything we can to keep our kids -- the ones we send off to college in pursuit of a future -- safe?
But we won"t ask any questions, here in the state with some of the loosest gun laws in the land.
If anything, this tragedy will result in a call to arm up the student body.
Because wouldn"t that have helped in the early hours outside Mountain View Hall?
Instead, our politicians make the usual calls for thoughts and prayers, thoughts and prayers.
Until next time, when we will think again and pray some more and once again, not dare to ask any questions.
