Ballers premiere react: Can you smell what the Rock is financial consulting?

Fresh from saving people from an earthquake in San Andreas and diving headlong into a remake of Big Trouble in Little China, Dwayne Johnson headlines his first television series in Ballers, a funny, charming, and surprisingly in-depth look at life inand afterthe NFL.

Johnson plays Spencer Strasmore, a retired journeyman defensive end who seems haunted by an injury inflicted on a rival. Still young and needing something else to do, he has taken up at a financial consulting firm, where cohort Joe (Rob Corddry) hopes he can reel in pro athletes who want to do business with one of their own. The premiere also introduces us to a handful of Johnsons other friends and cohorts, including a bad boy wide receiver looking to make a comeback, an offensive lineman-turned-car-salesman, the GM of the local Miami Dolphins (played gamely by The West Wing and Psych veteran Dule Hill), and an over-extended rookie who taps Johnson for a loan so he can provide for a houseful of hangers-on. The car salesman, played by Omar Benson Miller, is immediately the most compelling: We find him slightly overweight, watching what appears to be a TV special about head injuries, talking to his wife about getting work, and starting a family. He tells the world he doesnt miss the field and is done with that part of his life, though we can already tell he still feels the pull of the pigskin.

Ballers wouldnt be much of anything without Johnson, whose boundless charisma radiates from every pore and provides an endlessly compelling screen presence. But it isnt just a series of smiles and muscle flexes, as the writing offers a pretty clear-eyed look at what pro football life is like off the field. Though they are often perceived as over-affluent crybabies, professional athletes are often exploited, especially in the NFL, where the average career lasts a shade over three years, contracts are not guaranteed, and retired players are forced to face debilitating, life-altering injuries without any financial or emotional assistance from their employers. Though Ballers doesnt attack these things explicitly (this is a comedy, after all), all these ideas lurk in the background, and the fact that those issues (along with problems with domestic violence) were a huge part of the last football season make it instantly a show of our times.

Many critics have been quick to dismiss Ballers as some sort of extension of Entourage. Although I was not one of them, itis a fair surface observation: the show is produced by Steven Levinson, who also worked on Entourage, and there are a lot of fancy cars, lavish parties, and a cast of mostly dudes. Heck, the first episode features a major plot point wherein a player has s*x with a stripper in a bathroom at a club. But Ballers is too funny and has too much potential to dismiss. And if all else fails, the Rock will flash his smile and make everything all right.

Taylor Swift vows to keep '1989' off Apple Music

Sascha Steinbach/Getty Images for TAS Taylor Swift performs during "The 1989 World Tour" on Friday in Cologne, Germany. None of the songs from her fifth studio album will be available on the Apple Music streaming service. Taylor Swifts album "1989" will not be available on Apple Music because, she says, the streaming service doesn't properly pay artists.

Taylor Swift's got bad blood with Apple.

The pop star vowed to keep her multiplatinum-selling album "1989" which sold 1.3 million copies in its first week of sales off Apple Music, the company's new streaming service, due to artists not being paid during the service's three-month trial period.

"I'm not sure you know that Apple Music will not be paying writers, producers or artists for those three months," Swift wrote on her Tumblr page Sunday. "I find it to be shocking, disappointing and completely unlike this historically progressive and generous company."

While the "Bad Blood" singer did take a moment to boast about the company "because Apple has been and will continue to be one of my best partners in selling music and creating ways for me to connect with my fans," she still took a stance against their streaming service's free trial period.

"This is not about me. Thankfully I am on my fifth album and can support myself, my band, crew, and entire management team by playing live shows," she wrote.

"This is about the new artist or band that has just released their first single and will not be paid for its success. This is about the young songwriter who just got his or her first cut and thought that the royalties from that would get them out of debt. This is about the producer who works tirelessly to innovate and create, just like the innovators and creators at Apple are pioneering in their field but will not get paid for a quarter of a year's worth of plays on his or her songs," Swift continued.

The 25-year-old international superstar seemed to realize how the letter may appear to some and, again, clarified it wasn't about her personally getting a paycheck from Apple, but about the larger issue: artists being paid for their craft.

"These are not the complaints of a spoiled, petulant child," she wrote. "These are the echoed sentiments of every artist, writer and producer in my social circles who are afraid to speak up publicly because we admire and respect Apple so much. We simply do not respect their particular call."

Swift added, "Three months is a long time to go unpaid, and it is unfair to ask anyone to work for nothing."

David Paul Morris/Bloomberg

This isn't the first time the "Blank Space" singer decided to keep her music off a streaming service. In 2014, Swift decided to pull all her music from Spotify.

"I think there should be an inherent value placed on art," she told Time magazine in November. "I didn't see that happening, perception-wise when I put my music on Spotify."

She added how she simply "didn't like the way it felt."

Now, she's reiterating those feelings to Apple.

"We don't ask you for free iPhones," she wrote on Tumblr. "Please don't ask us to provide you with our music for no compensation."

Neymar will miss the Brazilians final group-stage match, against Venezuela on Sunday, and he is in danger of receiving a longer suspension that could keep him from playing in the quarterfinals and beyond, if Brazil advances.

After the final whistle of Wednesdays match, a frustrated Neymar kicked the ball toward the Colombian player Pablo Armero and then tried to head-b**t another player who confronted him. Colombias Carlos Bacca, who shoved Neymar from behind in the ensuing fracas, was also sent off and was provisionally suspended for one game.

Andre Ward's Blueprint to Return to Pound-for-Pound Glory

The Son of G*d knows the way to the top.

In fact, until a maddening series of injuries and promotional issues snuffed out three years of high-profile momentum, Andre Ward had already all but scaled the sorts of pound-for-pound heights most typically reserved for guys named Money, Pacman and Dr. Steelhammer.

The 2004 Olympic gold medalist hit his stride as a pro within half a decade and, thanks to Showtimes conveniently timed Super Six World Boxing Classic, bagged a series of wall-worthy trophies from 2009 to 2011. He went on to add the scalp of then-reigning light heavyweight champ Chad Dawson to his collection in 2012, but had fought just a dozen rounds in the subsequent 33 months until Saturday night.

But unless you had perused his bio beforehand, you probably would have never guessed.

Though the now-31-year-old Ward was faced with a foesturdy but limited Englishman Paul Smithchosen specifically to accentuate his positives, the comprehensive nature of the pasting he applied to the twice-failed title challengers face still warranted the sorts of boffo reviews hed always received.

No ring rust is showing, blow-by-blow man Barry Tompkins raved on the BET broadcast. You have to consider who hes in there with, nevertheless, no rust is showing. Hes back, theres no question about it. Now the caliber of opposition will step up, but theres no question the stage is his. Boxing writer Adam Abramowitz put it this way:

An instant after Tompkins completed his lofty critique, a towel came in from Smiths corner to signal traditional surrender at 1:46 of Round 9. And with it, as the golden-throated HBO alum had implied, was the indication that the first box had been checked in Wards quest to regain his former P4P position.

There was no live in-ring interview following the victory, but Tompkins claimed the still-reigning WBA champion at 168 pounds had indicated during fight week that his future would be in his home weight class, even though the bout with Smith was contractually agreed to at a catch weight of 172 pounds.

Should that be the case, the idea of a return to the pinnacle isnt a hard one to fathom.

Former Ward victim Carl Froch has shown a lean toward retirement, but hes still ranked No. 2 by the WBA for the time being and has discussed the notion of a rematch of the 2011 Atlantic City boutin which he lost seven, seven and 10 rounds on the scorecardsprovided it comes on his UK home turf.

Carl wants absolutely every advantage possible to fight Andre Ward, Frochs promoter, Eddie Hearn, told the Guardian. If hes going to fight Andre Ward, nows the time to do ithes been out for two years. I think (Froch) will fight again in September.

A repeat defeat of the Cobra would be enough to crack most pound-for-pound top-10s, and such a win would simultaneously stoke the rhetorical fires for a match Ward himself has been pondering out loud, against rampaging IBO/WBA middleweight kingpin Gennady Golovkin.

Ward, in his downtime role as an HBO analyst, has seen the unbeaten Kazakh from a ringside vantage point and stepped out of character recently to suggest Golovkin is actually pining for matches with naturally smaller men like Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez at 160 rather than stepping up himself.

He's going to cross his fingers that Canelo or Cotto take a fight with him, Ward told Rick Reeno of BoxingScene.com. He's literally begging these guys, who are smaller guys, to step in the ring and fight with him, but you can't have this reputation that you want to claim without fighting the best.

Who's the most intriguing foe for Andre Ward?

Golovkin has built a brand on being the sports most avoided fighter and claimed in the past that hed go anywhere from 154 to 168 pounds to entice a high-profile opponent. His promoter, Tom Loeffler, told Bleacher Report last month that the biggest hurdle between his man and Ward was financial.

If a fight with Andre Ward generated $100 million for Triple-G, there would be no discussion and we can make that fight next, he said. The problem is it won't. Triple-G said he would fight anyone from 154 to 168 about two years ago. His focus is on unifying the middleweight titles and would go up or down if there is a lucrative fight.

Golovkin occupies slot No. 4 on the Ring magazines most recent P4P list, so if Ward manages to first make the fight and then win it, his ascension is a shoo-in. And, with the retirement of the No. 1 man on that listFloyd Mayweather Jr.due to come by the end of 2015, the door to the penthouse suite is open.

I know there's another level I can be at where I'm not thinking about anything, Ward said at Saturdays post-fight press conference. There's another level of sharpness and being crisp that I have.

I felt like I did good tonight but I know I have better.

Stella Maxwell And Miley Cyrus Girlfriends Or Just Friends Who Both Like ...

Stella Maxwell and Miley Cyrus show all the signs of being a couple, though neither Stella nor Miley has officially confirmed their relationship. Mileys Instagram says it all, and Stella Maxwells Instagram isnt far behind. The two are popping up a lot on each others social media, as they post cosy selfies from their jet-setting trips and add some hot comments.

On a photo of Stella kissing Mileys cheek, Miley added, MEOW-TZ.

https://instagram.com/p/4DNNI4wzNA/?taken-by=mileycyrus

Another of Mileys posts included the caption, Sickkkkk dayyyy fooooo sho @stellamaxwell.

https://instagram.com/p/3nKEMyQzLK/?taken-by=mileycyrus

Mileys Instagram follower, xxczgem commented enthusiastically, YOU LOOK BEAUTIFUL TOGETHER! IF YOU LOVE EACH OTHER SHOW IT TO THE WORLD!

Stella posted a photo of a gold-flecked Miley holding a fluffy white cat.

The internet is sure that Wrecking Ball singer Miley Cyrus girlfriend is the beautiful Irish Victorias Secret angel Stella Maxwell. According to friends of the two, theyve been dating for months and are known as a couple to their close friends. They were seen together at the South by Southwest Festival in Austin, and later in Las Vegas, not long after Cyrus broke up with Patrick Schwarzenegger last March. A source close to the couple told the New York Daily News that Stella and Miley are affectionate and comfortable with each other.

They hold hands and hug and are very comfortable together. Theyre definitely together.

The pop star and the angel may have a lot in common. Stella, for instance, loves getting n***d as much as Miley does. The models Instagram account is filled with n***d photos of Stella, though most of them are connected to her Victorias Secret modelling work!

All those photos might have led to the new romance. Miley and Stella actually met after Mileys assistant, Cheyne Thomas, noticed Stella on Instagram and introduced the two. Miley described it as friendship at first sight, and the friendship only got better from there.

https://instagram.com/p/3d7aD7NDwp/?taken-by=stellamaxwell

Now that the news is out (though not confirmed yet by Stella or Miley), theyre starting their own rumors of long-term plans. Miley posted a photo of the two of them that was Photoshopped to show them holding hands in a parental kind of way with Miley as a little girl. She captioned the photo, @stellamaxwell & me with our future mini mc bb.

https://instagram.com/p/3o4aO0QzHv/?taken-by=mileycyrus

Miley was spotted out alone this past Friday June 19, causing the internet to second guess itself about whether Stella Maxwell is her girlfriend. Looking like shed just rolled out of bed, the Cant Stop, Wont Stop singer made several stops while dressed in her usual attention-getting style. She didnt say why she was alone or when we can expect to see her out with Stella Maxwell again!

Friday Box Office: 'Dope' Ropes $2.37M, 'Me, Earl, And The Dying Girl' Earns ...

Open Road debuted the Sundance darlingDopein 2,002 theaters. This Sundance sensation was acquired by Open Road Films for domestic distribution andSonyfor international theatrical release at a price tag of $7m, with a promise of $20m worth of promotion. It comes from producers Forest Whitaker, Puff Daddy, andPharrell Williams. Writer/director Rich Famuyima is best known for directingThe Woodin 1999 andBrown Sugarin 2002 and he is among a handful of names (allegedly) being tossed around in terms of directing MarvelsBlack Panther. The picture is about a bright young geek (Shameik Moore) who gets accidentally caught up in the seedier side of his lower-income neighborhood and must survive anAfter Hours-type adventure. Sadly it earned just $2.378 million yesterday for a likely $6.5m debut weekend.

The picture has earned rave reviews both for its performances and for its (allegedly) hyperkinetic filmmaking. And yes, for the record, its a kind of coming of age or geek boy becomes a geek man story that is usually reserved for white kids, so the racially diverse cast standsout in a relatively lilly-white summer. It can be argued that platforming may have been a better approach, but to be fair none of us were predicting thatJurassic Worldwould open at $208 million last weekend and thatInside Outwill be probably hitting $90-$95m this weekend as well. Even as someone who may not have time to see it for awhile (Im seriously considering taking my month-old to a Monday morning matinee, sitting far from everyone else, and hoping for best), Im happy that a film likeDopeexists in wide release in the middle of the blockbuster season. So call it a moral victory, for what thats worth!

In the holdover news,Spyearned another $3.075 million to bring its cume to $66.95m. Expect a $10.2m weekend (-34%), which is a pretty decent hold considering the competition, and a new $74m domestic cume for the 20th Century Fox action comedy. San Andreasearned $2.81m on its fourth Friday, giving The Rocks earthquake adventure a strong $126.169m cume. The Warner Bros./Time Warner Inc. film, which is about to cross $400m worldwide (if it hasnt already done so) on a $110m budget, should have $8m for the weekend (-25%) and a new $132m domestic cume.

Focus FeaturesInsidious Chapter 3earned another estimated $1.468millionon its third Friday, setting the stage for a $4.149m (-43%, not a bad hold) weekend and a $45.4m cume. Universal/Comcast Corp.s other big summer smashPitch Perfectearned $1.17m (-45%) despite losing 531 screens and should net $3.348m (-43%) for the weekend, giving the Anna Kendrick/Rebel Wilson sequel a $177.5m domestic cume. WarnersMad Max: Fury Roadearned another $720,000 on Friday, bringing its cume to $141.5m. It should earn $2.5m for the weekend for a new $143m domestic total.

Walt DisneysAvengers: Age of Ultronearned around $681k to set the stage for a 2.66m weekend (-28%) and a $449.3m domestic cume as it waits to open in Japan for the last leg of its global release. Disneys Tomorrowlandshould snag around $2m for the weekend (-44%) as it is no longer the big Disney movie of the moment or even the big female-centric Disney movie of the moment. Its new total will be $87m tomorrow.Entouragewas the movie of no moments, and it earned $545k (-61%) to bring its sad cume to $28.25m. Expect a $1.728m (-58%) weekend and a $29.44m total.

Love and Gloryearned around $457k on 794 screens (+221) to set the stage for a weekend total of $1.624m (-3%) and a new cume of $7m. Finally Fox Searchlight expandedMe, Earl, and the Dying Girlto 68 screens (+53) and earned $115k for the trouble. Expect a $416k weekend (+112%) and an okay $6,117 per-screen-average.

Thats the holdover news for today. Come back tomorrow for more weekend estimates and the like.

Thompson: Warriors parade also an ode to Oakland

OAKLAND -- After the official festivities were done, after the team selfies with the Larry O'Brien trophy, after Justin Holiday danced on stage to "I'm in love with the Coco" and ... Stephen Curry had one last wish.

He wanted another photo with the trophy. But for this one, he wanted his wife, Ayesha, with him. And he wanted The Essex, the apartments towering over Lake Merritt, in the background. That's where he first lived as a Warrior.

"Where it all started," Curry said, taking a moment to stare out one last time into the sea of blue and gold. "In Oakland."

A sea of Golden State Warriors' fans cheer during the NBA championship rally at Henry J. Kaiser Convention Center across from Lake Merritt in Oakland, Calif., on Friday, June 19, 2015. (Ray Chavez/Bay Area News Group) (RAY CHAVEZ)

Friday's parade and rally was a coronation of the 2015 NBA Champion Golden State Warriors. But it was also a celebration of Oakland. From the gorgeous weather and picturesque backdrops, to the fervent crowds and the ever-present spirit of "The Town," to MC Hammer and Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf riding on top of a snail float.

It was right to have this in Oakland. Especially because this particular edition of the Warriors and this particular city have a certified connection.

And while the plans are for the team to move into a fancy new arena in San Francisco, and while they are regarded as the Bay Area's team, this day was about the current hosts of the beloved Warriors.

"This was a beautiful day in The Town," said Kim Bardakian, director of public relations for Visit Oakland, who worked with ABC to get more footage of Oakland in the NBA Finals broadcasts. "The world was able to see the beauty and diversity of Oakland, which is something Oaklanders already know and love. The Warriors' championship run highlighted the best of Oakland."

The very players who were being honored went out of their way to honor Oakland right back.

Klay Thompson pointed to the apartments in which he once lived. Andre Iguodala called Oakland the place he loved and posed backstage with Oakland police officers. Draymond Green had Oakland native Marshawn Lynch tag along with him.

It makes sense these cast of Warriors would have an affinity for this city. The similarities are obvious, especially to the players who've been here awhile.

These Warriors are flashy and stylish in presentation, the way they play on the court. Yet at their core, why they're successful, is because of their willingness to grind. Just like Oakland.

These Warriors are underappreciated on a national scale, where mostly perception replaces reality. But by those who are around them, who've experienced them, they are unapologetically adored, flaws and all. Just like Oakland.

"Our mentality embodies what Oakland is about," Green said after using his speech to needle coach Steve Kerr and later dancing with the trophy on stage. "The Town has embraced us like no other. Some people only see the negatives in Oakland. But there is so much good here. It was the same with us. People doubted us, said what we couldn't do. And look where we are."

According to a Warriors official, an estimated 1.1 million people turned out for the parade and rally. And the love was epic. Walking around the festivities, it felt as if this was indeed the first championship parade in Oakland since before the Raiders left for Los Angeles.

It was crazy. How loud it became when the parade whisked by. How crammed together people were. Kerr said it was the best of the six parades he has been part of, three coming in Chicago and two in San Antonio.

More than once, Curry got caught up in the emotion of it all. As the bus with him and Iguodala turned the corner near the Cathedral of Christ the Light, Curry leaned forward with both arms raised screaming to the audience. He was so animated that he lost his balance a bit.

"I almost fell off the bus twice," Curry said. "I was just thinking, 'Grab the trophy.' I don't mind if I fall. Just make sure the trophy doesn't."

This is not an indictment of San Francisco, or a slight to the surrounding cities that support the Warriors. The entire East Bay has long been rabid in its support of the Warriors, and the team likes to point out it has a substantial ticket base in the West Bay.

If nothing else, this past season proved their fan base is vast and passionate.

But Friday wasn't about the entire fan base but about Oakland, its culture and passion and role in the Warriors becoming champions. It was about a city poppin' its collar as a legitimate sports town with fans any team would love.

If the Warriors get their wish, they will take the team away from Oakland. But no one will be able to take away the reputation of maniacal support this city has established. And no one will be able to take away the day when that was properly celebrated.

Save Alexander Hamilton

There is something sad and shockingly misguided in the spectacle of Treasury Secretary Jack Lew acting to belittle the significance of the foremost Treasury secretary in American history, Alexander Hamilton, by demoting him on the ten-dollar bill. In announcing the move Lew implied that Hamilton wouldnt disappear altogether from the bill, but would somehow share the space with an illustrious woman. Since the two would obviously look awkward side-by-side, the strong likelihood is that the female personage will be emblazoned on the front with Hamilton banished to the murky back side.

The desire to elevate a woman into the select pantheon of Americans on our currency is altogether laudable and I, for one, would be thrilled to see Harriet Tubman, Eleanor Roosevelt, or Susan B. Anthony grace the twenty-dollar bill. But to pounce on Hamilton as the victim of this long-overdue change is to correct one historic injustice by committing another.

And talk about bad timing! What makes Lews decision so woefully ironic is that Hamiltons standing has risen sharply in recent years, assisted by a slew of favorable biographies, my own included. And now, with its vibrant young, multiracial cast, the magnificent new musical Hamilton, created by the brilliant Lin-Manuel Miranda, is introducing a new generation to his manifold accomplishments. Miranda has done something miraculous, making early American history hip, cool, and erudite. Oddly enough, I received the news about Lews decision as I headed out for the first rehearsal of Hamilton, which is inspired by my book and is now en route to Broadway in July. Lews action threatens to undo the shows splendid work in rescuing Alexander Hamilton from the historical shadows and restoring his luster.

For a long time, Hamilton was a misunderstood and overlooked figure, consigned to a curious limbo. Among the major founders, he was, aside from Ben Franklin, the one who never made it to the White House and therefore lacked the reverent attention we bestow on presidents. He was also reviled by a succession of political enemiesJohn Adams, Thomas Jefferson, James Madison, and James Monroewho made it to the top and conspired to slant our long-term view of him. As a result, Hamiltons face was never chiseled on Mount Rushmore, nor did he receive a fancy memorial in Washington. The statue of him outside the Treasury Department is risibly small. The one distinction he could claim was an honored niche on the ten-dollar bill, lifting him into the rarefied company of political immortals.

Hamilton was undeniably the most influential person in our history who never attained the presidency. That he started out as an illegitimate, effectively orphaned, and penniless immigrant from the Caribbean, who didnt know a soul when he arrived in North America at the start of the American Revolution, makes his story worth celebrating in a nation of immigrants. His contributions to forging our country were gigantic and pervasive, starting with his starring role in the Revolutionary War, when he served as aide-de-camp and chief of staff to George Washington, and as a battlefield hero at Yorktown.

After the war, he personally issued the appeal for a Constitutional Convention, attended it, and was the sole New York delegate to sign the resulting document. To help ratify the new constitution, he spearheaded the writing of The Federalist Papers, publishing fifty-one of those eighty-five luminous essays. They remain the classic gloss on our Constitution and the documents most frequently cited by the Supreme Court. At the New York State Ratifying Convention, Hamilton spoke twenty-six times during a grueling six-week marathon and got the constitution ratified by a narrow margin in a key state.

In 1789, George Washington tapped the thirty-four-year-old Hamilton as the first Treasury secretary. With its tax collectors and customs inspectors, Hamiltons Treasury Department eclipsed in size the rest of the federal government combined, making him something akin to a prime minister. Drawing on a blank slate, Hamilton arose as the visionary architect of the executive branch, forming from scratch the first fiscal, monetary, tax, and accounting systems. In quick succession, he assembled the Coast Guard, the customs service, and the Bank of the United Statesthe first central bank and the forerunner of the Federal Reserve System. Most significantly, he took a country bankrupted by revolutionary war debt and restored American credit. All the while, he articulated an expansive vision of the Constitution, converting it into an elastic document that could grow with a dynamic young country.

One reason Hamilton was vilified by his enemies is that they feared him as an agent of modernity at a time when his Jeffersonian opponents espoused an American future that stressed traditional agriculture and small towns. In a stupendous leap, Hamilton argued for a thriving nation populated by cities, banks, corporations, and stock exchanges as well as traditional agriculture. In his famous Report on Manufactures, he enumerated how government could foster manufacturing and provide employment for immigrants. He shaped, in a virtuoso performance, Americas financial infrastructure in its entirety. On the Wall Street of the early 1790s, only five securities were traded: three issues of Treasury securities, the stock of the Bank of the United States, and the stock of the private Bank of New Yorkall created by Alexander Hamilton.

Especially pertinent in the controversy over the ten-dollar bill is that Hamilton was the figure in our history most identified with paper money. In 1791, he published his Report on the Mint, acting to establish the rudiments of our currency. He endorsed the dollar as our basic currency unit with smaller coins used on a decimal basis and first proposed putting presidential faces on coins. The banknotes of Hamiltons Bank of the United States counted as the first paper money issued by the new government. Arguably no one ever put a greater stamp on the currency we all use today, and which has become the worlds premier currency as well.

So where to put a deserving woman on it? The figure obviously ripe for reevaluation is Andrew Jackson on the twenty-dollar bill. For all his populist achievements as president, which were considerable, he was as hostile to the world of modern finance as Hamilton was prophetic. Where President Jackson owned a hundred slaves, Hamilton was an abolitionist who co-founded the New York Manumission Society in the 1780s. And where President Jackson oversaw the forced removal of Indians from the eastern seaboard in the infamous Trail of Tears, killing an estimated four thousand Cherokees, Hamilton lent his name and prestige to the creation of an academy in upstate New York designed to educate native-Americans.

So, yes, by all means, let us have a debate about the political figures on our currency and, yes, let us now praise famous women. But why on earth should we start that debate by singling out and punishing Alexander Hamilton, who did so much to invent our country and is finally enjoying his long-awaited moment in the spotlight?

Ron Chernow is the author of Alexander Hamilton (2004) and several other books. He won the Pulitzer Prize in biography in 2011 for his biography of George Washington, Washington: A Life.

Brian Williams booted from 'Nightly News,' replaced by Lester Holt

Brian Williams is being booted from NBC Nightly News and will be moved to MSNBC as a breaking news anchor, the network confirmed Thursday.

NBC News president Andy Lack said in a memo to staff that Lester Holt will become the permanent anchor of Nightly News, and Williams will take on a new role anchoring breaking news for MSNBC.

The network said that Lack and NBCUniversal CEO Steve Burke had decided that Williams, who was an anchor at MSNBC from 1996 to 2004, will now join MSNBC as anchor of breaking news and special reports. Williams will also serve as a breaking news anchor for NBC News when Holt is not available, and will begin the new role in mid-August.

The move comes after an exhaustive internal investigation into Lyin Brians tall tales exposed after he reiterated a misremembered report about a mission in Iraq. The probe uncovered further untruths made by the embattled anchor.

NBC said in a press release, The extensive review found that Williams made a number of inaccurate statements about his own role and experiences covering events in the field. The statements in question did not for the most part occur on NBC News platforms or in the immediate aftermath of the news events, but rather on late-night programs and during public appearances, usually years after the news events in question.

Williams issued another apology as part of todays announcement, which reads, Im sorry. I said things that werent true. I let down my NBC colleagues and our viewers, and Im determined to earn back their trust.

I will greatly miss working with the team on Nightly News, but I know the broadcast will be in excellent hands with Lester Holt as anchor. I will support him 100% as he has always supported me.

I am grateful for the chance to return to covering the news. My new role will allow me to focus on important issues and events in our country and around the world, and I look forward to it.

Lack added of Williams new role, Brian now has the chance to earn back everyones trust. His excellent work over twenty-two years at NBC News has earned him that opportunity.

Burke added, As you would imagine this was a difficult decision. Brian Williams has been with NBC News for a very long time and he has covered countless news events with honor and skill.

As I said in February, we believe in second chances, and I am hopeful that this new beginning will be good for Brian and the organization. This matter has been extensively analyzed and deliberated on by NBC. We are moving forward.

Of Holt taking the main anchor chair for Nightly News, Lack continued, Lester has done outstanding work for NBC News over the last ten years, and hes performed remarkably well over the last few months under very tough circumstances Lester is the perfect person to meet the moment.

Holt added, This is an enormous honor. The respect and admiration I have for the Nightly News team has only grown deeper over the last several months that weve been togetherIm very proud and grateful to be part of such an unflappable and dedicated team of professionals as we move forward together.

NBC also confirmed that Matt Lauer has conducted an interview with Williams over the last two days, which will air on Today on Friday morning and on NBC Nightly News on Friday evening.

Page Six first reported the newsthat Williams would be moved to MSNBC as a breaking news anchorearly Thursday.

Daniel Loeb On The Passing Of Jimmy Lee

Daniel Loeb, founder of Third Point LLC

Jimmy loved Wall Street more than anyone Ive ever known. He wasnt driven by money or deals but by his passion for people. There was no more loyal friend to be had on Wall Street, nor anyone whose wise counsel I valued more.

When I told Jimmy I planned to send a Japanese CEO a letter announcing we were becoming active in its stock, he advised me to deliver it in person, which I did. When that act earned us praise in Japan for showing special sensitivity to the countrys cultural customs, I repaid him by making him a tee shirt that said, I advised Dan Loeb on his investment in Sony Corporation(NYSE:SNE) (TYO:6758) and all I got was this lousy tee shirt.

My last correspondence with Jimmy was a note from him titled Bragging, where he told me about his sons admission into a highly competitive securities analysis program at Columbia Business School. He signed off by telling me that despite his long and successful career, his greatest accomplishment was his children. With Jimmys passing, our community lost a little bit of its humanity and I lost the closest thing Ive had to a big brother. My thoughts and prayers are with his family, who we discussed frequently, and who he was devoted to and loved so much.

SANTO DOMINGO, Dominican Republic The attorney general of the Dominican Republic says he hopes the Vatican's former ambassador to the Caribbean nation is convicted of charges that he sexually abused young boys.

The Holy See announced Monday that Jozef Wesolowski has been indicted on charges of sexually abusing Dominican boys and having child p*********y on his computer.

Wesolowski will stand trial next month in a Vatican criminal court, the first time such a high-ranking Vatican official has been tried on s*x abuse charges.

On Tuesday, Dominican Attorney General Francisco Dominguez Brito said the purported victims need justice. The Wesolowski case has, in his words, "deeply hurt our society, and there must be a decision that conforms with this fact."

The Polish-born Wesolowski was recalled by the Vatican in 2013. He has since been defrocked.

DEADSPIN: 'St. Louis Cardinalsthe sports equivalent of the Duggar clan'

Deadspins Drew Magary wrote the ultimate takedown piece of the St. Louis Cardinals that you will find around the web today.

The lede:

By now, you know that the St. Louis Cardinalsthe sports equivalent of the Duggar clanare currently under investigation by the FBI for hacking into a Houston Astros database. (The FBI! That means theyre f****d.) And not only did they allegedly hack into another teams system, but they allegedly did it in the clumsiest, most easily detectable way possible. Unlike other over-covered sports scandals, this one includes actual crime! Real cheating! A legitimate threat to the integrity of the game! THIS IS NOT WINNING THE RIGHT WAY.

The Cardinals, who are considered the most pristine franchise in the world by their fans, were knocked down a peg on Monday.

Jhen Aiko Unwraps A Special Gift For Tupac's Birthday

by Rob Markman 7h ago

Tupac Shakur has an everlasting influence. Had the hip-hop icons life not been cut short at the age of 25, he wouldve turned 44 on Tuesday, Jun. 16. Yet even though he was murdered at such a young age, Pac has provided a lifetime of inspiration for future generations.

Jhen Aiko was only an 8-year-old, when Tupac died on Sept. 13, 1996, but after she saw the 2003 documentary Tupac: Resurrection she was affected forever.

Aiko often acknowledges Pac on his birthday, but this year she decided to share her gifts with the world, exclusively through MTV News. To celebrate Shakur, Jhen recreated three classic Tupac photos with photographer Danny Williams.

One of the photos captures the feel of the rappers diamond-selling 1996 classic All Eyez on Me, by recreating the LPs album cover; while another pays homage to the photo used to cover his posthumous Greatest Hits collection. The third photo, finds Aiko laying in a bathtub, covered in gold, saluting David Lachapelles Becoming Clean photo shoot, which took place right after Pac was released from jail in 1995.

In addition to the photos, Jhen shared a video of her covering her favorite Tupac song, Keep Ya Head Up, and she sat down with MTV News to talk about the influence that Shakur has had on her life, her soul and her music.

Happy birthday!

MTV: You recreated three iconic Tupac photos, that weve debuted here today. When did you get the inspiration to recreate these?

Jhen Aiko: I would say like a few years ago. Its been a few years, but every birthday of his I always want to do something. I feel like I have to give his legacy some type of present. It started off, one time I did a video shoot where they spread his ashes. And it was a coincidence that I was there that day, we were all like, Wait a minute, this is Tupacs birthday and were here on the same beach. So after that, its been several years since then and every year I want to do something. I wrote a letter one year, I put it on my tumblr. Its a special day because to me he was such a special person, so this year it was just an idea that me and my team had and Im passionate about Tupac so it was something and I was like, Yeah. It was just random, it just happened on the spot; it was a really good idea for his birthday.

MTV: The pictures came out really dope. Talk about taking these photos. I could only imagine when you do anything Pac related theres pressure, because he has so many fans that love him. Was there pressure?

Aiko: I didnt necessarily want the pictures to be exactly spot-on because I cant channel Tupac. Hes so great to me that I dont even compare myself to him, like Im trying to be Tupac. Thats not what it is. Its just that my love for him, I really wanted to do the pictures justice. There were moments, specifically on the All Eyez on Me picture, where Im sitting on the chair and it was a really uncomfortable position for me because Im so small. And Im like, This picture is not going to look the same as his because Im not the same body type. I was nervous about looking too masculine, but then I was like, You know what? This is Pac, let me channel my confidence because he had all that confidence. I wasnt worried about what people were going to think, because its just a personal thing for me. Im not doing it for people to be like, Oh, wow. For me, its just about expressing my gratitude towards him and his legacy.

MTV: June 16 wouldve been Pacs 44th birthday and he was 25 when he passed away. At what age did you become aware of Tupac? What was your earliest memory of him?

Aiko: My earliest memory of Tupac Im from L.A., born and raised, so I think the station at the time was 92.3 the Beat. They obviously played all the West Coast hip-hop and R&B. Im super young, I was born in 88, so when Pac was at his prime, I was still a toddler, I was a baby. I guess I have early memories of hearing him on the radio and seeing his CDs laying around because I have older brothers and sisters. But I didnt form a personal love for him until I was a teenager and I saw Resurrection and living in L.A. they play Tupac still like hes a new artist on certain stations. So I grew up listening to him and loving the music. I always liked the way he looked, I always had a crush on him that started in elementary school. When I saw Resurrection, I was so inspired. I was young at the time and obviously the people that were older, that got to witness Tupac in his prime, they were already I was late. I was a kid just discovering something at the right time when I could fully understand what he was all about.

MTV: How did things change for you after seeing Resurrection?

Aiko: I remember getting home from watching that and just feeling so inspired and I wrote this long journal entry about how inspired I was and motivated. I was so in awe of his story that I just dove in. I got books and I tried to find everything about Tupac. I started watching all the interviews, I started becoming obsessed and it wasnt about the music at that point. It was about him as a person and what he did as far as aside from music.

MTV: In a lot of ways, Im a little envious that you caught on late, as you say, because I remember when Pac was just a dancer for Digital Underground, then I remember when he was a rapper, then I remember when he did Juice. I got to see him grow, but to me he was a rapper first. You got to see him as a whole and not in parts.

Aiko: I just saw the big picture. I never felt there were a lot of people I could relate to as far as wanting to do so many things with my life that dont necessarily have to do with the other. He was so contradictory to people, but to me he was just human and not afraid to express himself. I could relate to that a lot How dancing turned into music, turned into acting, turned into all of the things that he did. And he still had this passion and this purpose about him. That spoke to me so much.

MTV: You talk about his contradictions and his dualities. There were many sides to him. What was the side you related to the most?

Aiko: I think the poet; the poet in Pac and the philosopher. He was thirsty for knowledge and I relate to that a lot, which is why a lot of the things that he did was contradictory to most people. Most people dont understand that its OK to be human and say one thing, do another thing, think another thing and then act another way. Thats what makes us amazing is that were all these things at once.

MTV: Whats your favorite Pac song?

Aiko: Keep Ya Head Up.

Embedded from www.youtube.com.

MTV: [Laughs] I couldnt have guessed. You cover that a lot at your shows. What is it about Keep Ya Head Up that draws you in?

Aiko: I remember when I was pregnant with my daughter and that song came on. I just cried like never before. His words meant so much to me. I just felt like I needed to hear that. I didnt know what was going to happen next. I wasnt in the best position to have a child. I was growing hopeless. At that moment I was leaving a free-clinic-type-of-family-planning-type of place to do my prenatal stuff. I was on the county, I had my E.B.T. card, I had my food stamps. I was in the system and I felt like, Where was my life going at this point? It was hard for me to be optimistic. But that song came on and thats what changed the whole mood of my pregnancy.

From that day when I heard that song, I was like, You know what? Hes right. I need to just keep my head up and keep it pushing and do what I have to do. From then on everything turned into a positive experience. It really stuck at that moment, because that was 2007 and the song had been out for years and years and years. Not until I had that full-circle moment of understanding struggle and pain did I relate to the song that much more.

MTV: You talked about him being a poet. I feel like your music is poetic, as well. Is that something that comes naturally you? Is that something that you learned listening to him?

Aiko: I think its natural. Writing has always been my go-to form of expression. Whenever I was going through something as a kid, I would write it down and I would turn it into a poem. And I was a teenager when I really got into Resurrection and really got into his poetry and really got into his life. I related to him so much because I felt like I was the same type of person that was into poetry and expressing myself through words. Just having a love for words, thats something thats always been in me since I started school since I started learning letters.

It came natural; thats why I love Pac. I remember for one of my birthdays, my dad got me one of his poetry books and I was just tripping out because his voice is his own thing. Even if he didnt write, his voice is powerful enough to stand alone, but then his words are the same thing. Theyre powerful enough to stand on their own by just reading them. Thats something that I would like my words to be.

MTV: I have to commend you for taking these photos and doing this cover and saluting Pac, because were in a generation now where it seems that a lot of young fans dont acknowledge the greats that came before us. Fans say the Migos are better than the Beatles and thats a matter of taste and preference, but it doesnt seem cool to acknowledge the past these days.

Aiko: I feel like I grew up in a time where we still had the analog stuff I got to experience tapes, I got to experience VHS, I got experience a lot of analog stuff and not only that, my family was late to catch on to the digital world. We didnt have a computer for a long time, we didnt have a cell phone for a long time, we didnt have cable. I think its important to stay connected to that, because it keeps you grounded. I just feel a way about everything being digital. Now, its all about whats new, whos better than who? Were not celebrating the individual, were not celebrating us all being great. Dont forget about Tupac, dont forget about Biggie, dont forget about these amazing people that taught us these things.

Bobbi Kristina Brown Update: Investigative Book May Show What Caused ...

An investigative book titled, "Whitney & Bobbi Kristina: The Deadly Price of Fame," is expected to shed light on the life led by the late Whitney Houston and her daughter Bobbi Kristina Brown, and is set to be released on June 9, Gallery Books announced Tuesday, according to reports. The book has been authored by well-known investigative journalist Ian Halperin, who has previously written on Michael Jackson and Kurt Cobain, among others.

His latest book will likely reveal details about the lifestyle followed by Whitney, which may have been linked to her daughters current health condition.

The book will explore the complicateddynamics of the Houston and Brown families, which will be analyzed using conversations with friends and family members, NJ.comreported.

Halperin is known for his 2009 book, Unmasked: The Final Years of Michael Jackson, which was a New York Times bestseller, the Inquisitr reported. His other books include "Celine Dion: Behind the Fairytale," "Fire and Rain: The James Taylor Story"and "Hollywood Undercover." He has also co-authored two books about the suicide of Nirvanas lead singer Kurt Cobain, NJ.com reported.

The book is also expected to track Whitney's rise and decline amid drug problems until her death in 2012. Whitneys death, which was considered an accidental drowning, has been surrounded in controversy despite the Los Angeles County Coronersaying in an autopsy report in 2012that"effects of atherosclerotic heart disease and cocaine use" were the reason for her death. She was found unresponsive in a bathtub in a hotel room at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California.

Her daughter, Bobbi Kristina, was also found unconscious in a bathtub at her Georgia, Atlanta home on Jan. 31, amid rumors of drug use by the 22-year-old. However, recent reports cited her friend, Debra Brooks, who claimed that Bobbi Kristina was deathly afraid of bathtubs and that she never took a bath in them.

Brooks had also reportedly said that before the accident, there was yelling between Bobbi Kristina and her boyfriend Nick Gordon. Some reports even suggested that Bobbi Kristina might havecheatedon Gordon with another man, leading to a heated argument between the couple on the night she was found unresponsive.

While a criminal investigation in the case continues, Bobbi Kristinas father Bobby Brown hasnot allowedGordon to meet his unconscious girlfriend, who is suspected to be suffering from an irreversiblebrain damage. Bobby Brown claims that Gordon is withholding information about the night of the incident.

In addition, the Houston and Brown families are feuding over the $20 million estate that Bobbi Kristina received from her mother. According to Whitneys will, the estate will be handed over to Bobbi Kristinas grandmother Cissy Houston and aunt Pat Houston if Bobbi Kristina dies. Although Bobby Brown and Pat Houston hold the co-guardianshipof Bobbi Kristina, Bobby Brown does not have any legal rights over the estate.

Whitneys daughter is currently admitted in Atlanta'sDeKalb Medical Facility and still remains unconscious.

Street flooding big concern with Tropical Storm Bill

HOUSTON (KTRK) --

City and county officials say they are monitoring Tropical Storm Bill and its impact from their emergency operations centers.

Harris County activated its Office Emergency Management Sunday night; then on Monday, Houston officials activated the City's Emergency Operations Center, which consists of several agencies including the Houston Police Department, the Houston Fire Department, the City of Houston Office of Emergency Management, the City of Houston Public Works & Engineering Department and the Red Cross.

Both the city and county centers are operating at the high level, which is activated when dangerous conditions exist or there is an imminent threat to life and property.

Current threats to life and property include:

  • Failure to adequately shelter from high winds, threat of street and river flooding, and isolated tornadoes.
  • Areas along the coast could see possible localized storm surge of up to 2 ft, which may cause street flooding.

Potential impacts to property include:

  • Wind damage to porches, awnings, carports, and unanchored mobile homes. Some trees may be uprooted. Debris may make some roads impassable.
  • Moderate rainfall may prompt several rescues or evacuations. Underpasses, low-lying spots, and areas around creeks, canals, and small streams may become dangerous.
  • Isolated tornadoes can hinder the execution of emergency plans. Some places may experience tornado damage.
The City of Houston's Catastrophic Medical Operations Center (CMOC), which is co-located at the City of Houston EOC, also is active. Their role is to coordinate any potential resource or information needs that are required by the hospital community in a 25-county region.

Employees are arriving at the centers with pillows, sleeping bags and overnight bags. There are briefings every few hours in their big operations center upstairs, with folks watching the radar and bayous.

The big concern is flooding. Just three weeks ago, non-stop rainfall caused bayous to spill over, flooding several major roadways. Drivers were left stranded, and nine people were killed in the Memorial Day floods.

Officials caution people about driving in the storm. Below are some of the safety precautions they're suggesting:

  • Seek shelter from hazardous winds.
  • Avoid driving into high water.
  • Gather supplies to be able to comfortably be in your home for 3-5 days. This includes water, food, flashlights, and other necessities. Download a full list from the City of Houston Disaster Preparedness Guide.
  • Remove outdoor items which may be picked up in heavy wind and securing them as appropriate
  • Make sure you have a way to stay informed in the event power goes out. This may include a NOAA Weather Radio, or a battery-powered radio or television.
  • Communicate with your family about what you will do in the event heavy rain separates you.
  • Communicate with your employer in the event heavy rain and flooding keeps you from being able to report to work over the next few days.
  • Check on elderly or disabled friends and neighbors to make sure they have what they need in the event this storm impacts Houston.

Game Details

Megan Rapinoe of the U.S. goes to the ground during her team's 0-0 draw with Sweden.

WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- The United States played to a 0-0 tie with Sweden and former coach Pia Sundhage Friday night in one of the most anticipated matches of the group stage at the Women's World Cup.

Abby Wambach came off the bench in the second half, but her header in the 72nd minute was popped up and over the crossbar by Swedish goalkeeper Hedvig Lindahl.

A win would have assured the United States a spot in the knockout round as the Americans seek their third World Cup title, but first since 1999. The U.S. women advanced to the final four years ago in Germany, but fell to Japan on penalty kicks.

The United States, ranked No. 2 in the world, has one more group stage match, on Tuesday in Vancouver, British Columbia, against Nigeria. Sweden heads to Edmonton, Alberta, for its final group match with Australia. The month-long tournament, with an expanded field of 24 teams, is being played across six Canadian cities.

The U.S. leads the Group D standings with four points, following a 3-1 victory over No. 10 Australia in the opener. Sweden was surprised in its opener by No. 33 Nigeria, which erased a 2-0 deficit at the half for a 3-all tie.

Earlier Friday the Matildas defeated Nigeria 2-0.

U.S. coach Jill Ellis tinkered with her lineup for the match against Sweden, starting 22-year old Morgan Brian while Wambach was on the bench.

Wambach did give the U.S. an immediate boost after entering in the 68th minute, but Lindahl kept the match scoreless. Liddahl was named the player of the match.

Some five mintues after Wambach's chance, Caroline Seger's hard shot from far out was saved by defender Meghan Klingenberg, who deflected the ball to the crossbar. Goal-line technology was used to make sure the ball never crossed the line on its descent.

The United States had a good chance in the 34th minute when Ali Krieger charged into the box but her shot to the far post went wide. Shortly after Hope Solo punched away Therese Sjogran's corner kick into a crowded box, Megan Rapinoe's free kick in the 39th minute sailed well over the goal.

Lindahl came up with her first big save of the match when she popped Carli Lloyd's shot up and over the bar early in the second half.

Solo jumped to stop Sjogran's hard shot from far out in the 54th minute but it sailed over her fingertips and over the bar.

Solo started in goal for the United States as off-field incidents continue to haunt her. The United States opened played the day after an ESPN report revealed new details about her arrest last June in Washington state on domestic violence charges. The charges were dismissed earlier this year.

Sundhage was head coach of the United States for five years, guiding the team to two Olympic gold medals and the World Cup final in Germany. It was the first time the Americans had advanced to the final since winning it all in 1999.

Sundhage left after the 2012 London Games and returned home to coach her native Sweden's national team.

Adding to the buildup for the match was a story about Sundhage earlier in the week in The New York Times. In it, Sundhage was quoted as saying that Lloyd was a challenge to coach and she suggested she wouldn't start Wambach at this point in the popular veteran's career. She said Solo was one of the most challenging players she'd coached, "especially when it comes to trouble."

She talked about those statements before the match, saying the interview occurred back in April and she certainly was not trying to taunt the U.S. team. She called Solo "a piece of work," but went on to also call her the "the best goalkeeper in the world." She also said she would start Wambach on Friday night.

Boxing latest on Naseem Hamed, Lee Haskins and Deontay Wilder

British featherweight boxer Prince Naseem Hamed cools off during training in Las Vegas in 2000

08:30 Sunday 14 June 2015 12:16 Saturday 13 June 2015

Naseem Hamed will be missing when his name is inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in Canastota, New York today.

An apparent medical condition affecting the Sheffield mans wife Eleasha has been prevented him from receiving one of the biggest honours available to the worlds most revered pugilists.

Naz, who famously ruled the world at featherweight, says he will travel to the event next year instead, to give his acceptance speech.

The Ring magazine, referring to his absence, reported: There are those who wonder whether Hameds no-show status is somehow connected to visa problems resulting from a 2005 three-car crash in England involving Hamed which left another driver severely injured and led to the fighter serving four months in prison.

The magazine also suggests the former Ingle stylist may have had to wait for his eighth year of eligibility to be honoured due to an anti-Hamed American voting bloc that didnt believe the son of Yemeni immigrants fought long enough or faced enough quality opponents, or was just too arrogant and self-absorbed to be granted all-time great status.

The 26th annual induction ceremony goes ahead on Sunday, with Riddick Bowe and Ray Mancini getting the red carpet treatment.

Hamed (36-1, 31 knockouts) was aged 28 when he retired in 2002 but says he went out at the right time.

Does the one-time Wincobank champion deserve the induction?

We have asked some leading characters in Sheffields boxing community for their view.

See what they say in Mondays Star.

* Deontay Wilder knocked Eric Molina out after nine rounds in Alabama to retain the WBC world heavyweight championship.

The 239-pound Texan had already been knocked down on three occasions but managed to get up every time before Wilder delivered the final big blow with 1:03 left in the ninth.

Tuscaloosa-native Wilder, 29, was defending the belt he won from Bermane Stiverne in January in what was the first-ever world championship fight in his home state of Alabama.

This is what its all about, he told Showtime. This is the first of many title fights in Alabama.

On Molina, he added: To be honest, I definitely was surprised. It does my heart so good even standing in front of him right now and say this guy has heart.

All the critics doubted him, all the naysayers said he wouldnt last but Im so proud of him.

He has my support from this point on because this is the first ever title defence in any weight division in the state of Alabama.

What I needed was a tough guy, I needed a guy that had heart, I needed a guy that was going to get dropped but come back up and still fight. I needed that. And Eric Molina, I got that out of him.

* Britains Lee Haskins, 32, claimed the IBF interim bantamweight title by stopping Ryosuke Iwasa of Japan in the sixth round at the Whitchurch Arena on his home turf in Bristol.

Iwasa, 25, fighting outside Japan for the first time, was caught by a big left hand from British and EBU champion Haskins in the sixth round and, although he beat the count, referee Phil Edwards called a halt to the contest with 50 seconds of the round remaining.

US police snipers shoot and 'kill' downtown Dallas gunman James Boulware

Dallas Police Chief David Brown said a police sniper shot a man suspected of attacking police headquarters in Dallas, Texas, on Saturday (13 June).

Brown told reporters at a news conference that the man is believed to be dead, but that authorities have not yet been able to approach the vehicle safely to confirm he was killed.

Police investigators said they believe the man acted alone when he launched a hail of bullets at the police station in the early hours of Saturday, contradicting earlier witness reports that more than one perpetrator was responsible for the attack.

Following an exchange of fire in the station car park, dozens of squad cars gave chase and the gunman's armoured van was finally surrounded at a parking lot in the nearby suburb of Hutchins.

A pipe bomb was found in at least one of four bags left outside Jack Evans Police Headquarters.

One of the bags exploded when a bomb squad robot tried to move it, and nearby residents were evacuated as a precaution. No one was wounded by the gunmen or the explosive device.

James Lance Boulware(Police handout)

Dallas News reported that the man has identified himself as James Boulware, 50, who has a history of family violence and blames authorities for losing custody of his son.

Boulware said he was going to blow up police because they "took his child and accused him of being a terrorist", Brown told an earlier news conference on Saturday.

The gunman also told police negotiators he had explosives in the van, which has gun ports built into its sides.

Police cautioned that they have not yet confirmed the identity of the suspect.

On Saturday, Vice News reported that police were working to establish whether the van used in the assault was the same one sold on eBay on 7 June for $8,250 (5,300).

Described as a "zombie assault vehicle" the van, which was allegedly sold by Jenco Sales Inc, was described as having "convenient gun ports", armour plating and bulletproof windows.

The Facebook post which showed the van's eBay listing has been removed.

ALICE COOPER Dedicates His 'Legend' Award To SIR CHRISTOPHER LEE

Alice Cooper was honored with the "Legend" award at this year's Kerrang! Awards, which were held Thursday night (June 11) in London, England. The ceremony took place at Troxy, where JUDAS PRIEST was also handed the "Inspiration" prize.

Speaking to Kerrang! after the event, Cooper dedicated his award to legendary actor Sir Christopher Lee, who died earlier this week at the age of 93."Christopher Lee was, like, an inspiration to every total rock guy out there," Alice said (see video below). "He was the best. Him and Vincent Price; we worked with those guys. I got to work with Vincent Price, and I knew Christopher Lee on a lot of diferent levels. We tried to do some songs together, but never quite got it together. But he was really a rocker. I mean, the guy was doing heavy metal albums. That's pretty hip."Sir Christopher Lee last December released released his latest heavy metal single titled "Darkest Carols, Faithful Sing".The single was a playful take on the Christmas classic "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" and included three different mixes of the song.Christopher Lee became the oldest heavy metal artist at the age of 91. At Christmas 2013, the song "Jingle h**l" reached No. 18 on Billboard, making him the oldest performer in history to have charted. The record was previously held by Tony Bennett.

WOMENS WORLD CUP: US and Sweden play to 0-0 group-stage draw

WINNIPEG, Manitoba The United States played to a 0-0 tie with Sweden and former coach Pia Sundhage Friday night in one of the most anticipated matches of the group stage at the Womens World Cup.

The World Cup is being played as FIFA deals with an ongoing corruption scandal sparked by the U.S. Department of Justice indictment of 14 people with racketeering, wire fraud, money laundering and other offenses. Swiss prosecutors are leading a separate probe into the 2018 and 2022 World Cup bidding contests.

FIFA President Sepp Blatter, who is not at the tournament, announced last week that he plans to step down once an election is held for a successor.

Warriors beat b****y LeBron James and Cavs in Game 4, Andre Iguodala ...

WARRIORS 103, CAVS 82

CLEVELAND LeBron James tenuous lead in the Finals has been erased, and his home-court advantage has vanished because of a blowout and a lineup adjustment from Warriors coach Steve Kerr.

For the first time in the NBA Finals, the Cavaliers looked like a team ravaged by injuries to their stars, a one-man show with a very pedestrian supporting cast.

RELATED: LEBRON JAMES' p***s ACCIDENTALLY FLASHED ON LIVE TV

Golden State went small by featuring Andre Iguodala at power forward, and James returned to this realm during Thursday nights ugly 103-82 defeat to the Warriors in Game 4. Bloodied by a collision with a cameraman in the second quarter, James finished with just 20 points in 41 minutes by far his worst performance in a series now tied at 2-2.

They doubled me a little bit more tonight, kind of made me give the ball to my teammates, James said. We couldnt make any shots from the outside. Defensively we were pretty good. Offensively, we were terrible.

The Warriors didnt need a spectacular game from MVP Stephen Curry, or a revival of the Splash Brothers, who spearheaded a 67-win season. Instead, they rode Iguodala on both sides of the floor, getting 22 points from the player who was charged with guarding James. The former All-Star had been reduced to a bench role all season, and then Game 4 of the NBA Finals became his first start under Kerr.

He looks great out there, Kerr said. Hes been our best player through four games. He guards LeBron pretty much every possession hes out there, and his offense has been terrific.

Twice prior to the game, Kerr had said he would start Andrew Bogut, not wanting to tip his hand. He admitted to the misdirection afterward.

I dont think they hand you the trophy based on morality, Kerr said. They give it to you if you win. So sorry about that.

RELATED: NIKE REACHES EIGHT-YEAR APPAREL DEAL WITH NBA

The Warriors also watched James give up the ball to teammates who missed open shots: Matthew Dellavedova (3-for-14), J.R. Smith (2-for-12) and Iman Shumpert (2-for-9). The Cavs shot just 33%, including 4-for-27 from beyond the arc, in a game they never led after the first quarter.

We couldnt get the ball down (the net), Cavs coach David Blatt said.

To hoist his third championship trophy, James will now have to win another game in Oakland, whether its Sundays Game 5 or a potential Game 7.

James wasnt efficient Thursday either, missing 15 of his 22 attempts. He finished with 12 rebounds and eight assists, falling short of his second triple-double of the Finals. With 4:43 remaining in the second quarter, the crowd held its breath as James was fouled hard under the basket by Andrew Bogut. James barreled toward the sideline and hit his head on a TV camera, lying on the court for a few minutes.

James emerged with a large gash and blood coming from the side of his head. He never left the game, though, and connected on one of two free throws. At halftime, with the Cavs trailing by 12, James told ABC that he felt pain and required glue to seal up the wound.

He said that his head was stitched up after the game, with enough (stitches) to close it up.

I was just trying to regain my composure, was holding my head. It was hurting, James said, adding that he still had a slight headache after the game but didnt have to go through any concussion protocols. And I was just hoping I wasnt bleeding. But obviously the camera cut me pretty bad.

The Warriors wanted a track meet, and before Game 4, James had been bringing up the ball slowly and waiting out the shot clock before attacking. The small lineup helped mitigate that, with the Warriors picking up the pace by scoring in transition and firing three-pointers.

The Cavs, however, scored the first seven points of the game. The crowd was exploding, and Kerr was forced to take a timeout after three minutes. Then Golden State settled down, took control with a 31-15 run and never trailed again.

It made sense when he told us (about the lineup adjustment) because weve been getting off to such slow starts, said Curry, who scored 22 points in 41 minutes.

Still, Cleveland trailed by just six entering the fourth quarter. James went to the bench to start the quarter, the Cavs couldnt score for the opening two minutes and that signified the end.

Smith and Shumpert, the Knicks castaways, went to the bench after dreadful shooting performances.

Timofey Mozgov led the Cavs with 28 points and 10 boards, but the perimeter players were sluggish.

Horse---- Smith said when asked to assess his game.
